This is a small park state park compared to others in the area. It is also quiet. We decided to hike here before we checked in for a night at pigeon point light house hostel. we picked the approximately 5 - 6 miles hike starting at six bridges trail -> little butano creek trail -> Goat Hill trail -> Ano... First I'll say that the park is lovely. One of the loveliest redwood parks we've been to. We picked up some picnic stuff from Arcangeli in Pescadero - must stop! - and we had our picnic in Butano. There were picnic tables galore. We asked at the visitors center about a trail appropriate for kids (we had 2 4 yr... More

We ended up hiking the long loop starting at Jackson Flats and ended coming back on Ano Nuevo. It was 10 miles with a lot of up and down the last half. The loop started in a Redwood Forest which provided ample shade throughout the first 3 miles. Around mile 4, exit the forest and the trees get much shorter... More

Butano State park is a beautiful hidden gem just off of hwy 1 between Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay. We spent the just one night there camping in site# 36. It's one of the hike in sites but it's only a couple hundred feet if you're worried about being too far from your car. Each hike in site also... More

Provides a selection of awesome and easy hikes along a creek to commune with giant redwood trees. There was NO one on our trail for over an hour--just us and the trees and the sound of the creek. Easy access on the drive from San Fran to San Jose.

This hike was a bit over 5 miles. Some of the trails were groomed and others were totally overgrown. That said...it was still fun and you get quite a workout going up the Ano Nuevo trail. We returned on the 6 bridges trail. Someone mentioned in an earlier post that it was a lot to pay for a short time... More

We went here for a quick hike along a couple of trails with our kids. We showed them redwood trees, douglass firs, and alders. We saw Stellar's Jays, a Pacific wren, and a flock of chestnut-backed chickadees foraging in trees up the Jackson flats trail from the visitor center. We saw one female adult deer on the entrance road coming... More

Beautiful campground. The walk in sites don't have a lot of parking options. Sites are pretty small, but really pretty. The pit toilets were some of the smelliest I've encountered; not all pit toilets are that smelly. Pretty gross. No sinks.

A friend of ours recommended this place and I am so glad we went, only if for a night. We spent the entire week camping throughout California, and this was our FAVOURITE spot! So peaceful, beautiful hikes, and banana slugs EVERYWHERE! We also came across a little newt that crawled right to my feet! It definitely is a hidden gem.
