Stopped here on New Years Eve with kids in tow. Always try to fit in something historical whilst on holiday. The mansion itself is impressive, the story behind it even more so. Tour was free and extremely informative. Would recommend if you have 30-60 minutes to burn while in Sacramento.

Excellent guide was a fount of knowledge; there is a small visitors' centre, so stop there for a few minutes to sign up for the free tour given every hour. I had a private tour [the only tourist who showed up at 3pm]; great fun to tour through such a mansion/museum

This was a great way to spend a few hours and learn a little about California's history. We had to park about a 1/2 mile away though and finding the entrance proved to be a minor challenge. We joined a small docent led group and our docent was knowledgeable and kept the group on topic. We recommend taking a tour.

We toured the Mansion on Veteran's day weekend. There were only 6 of us on the tour. I was amazed at how much our docent covered. Val, our docent, had been with the mansion for 30 years. She covered Leland & Jennifer Stanford's history; including information about Stanford University and their move to San Francisco. Lots of information about the... More

My son lives in Sacramento and never even knew this place existed. I was visiting in the area, and I had read about it and suggested we visited the mansion. It was "amazing" and there were very interesting stories behind the life of Leland Stafford, his family and fortune. The tour was free and the guide that took us through... More

I went on a Sunday and it was a super quiet day so I got the guide all to myself. He was a funny and knowledgeable man. What an amazing historic building, full of beautiful rooms and stories to uncover. A must see when you are in sacramento!

What an amazing home for just one family. I found out that the former Governor Schwarzenegger still used a room in the mansion for certain occasions. It's amazing the beautiful craftsmanship and the story of one of California's most powerful families. I enjoyed every second of it and you will too if you love history.

Begin your visit to the Stanford mansion with the free tour, which is excellently conducted and very worth-while, and the only way you can see the interior of the mansion. There are small grounds, and also a visitor center which has informative displays and a souvenier shop. We walked here from Old Sacramento, but there seemed to be a fair... More
