Beautiful cave tour and amazing wines
Mar 2020
This winery is very small with limited production that can not be found anywhere but at the winery. Sean did a fantastic job taking our group on a tour of the caves and tasting room. It's by appointment and you need to make plans a few days (if not more) ahead of time but it's well worth it. Because of the location there are only so many cars that are allowed to visit per week.

First Stop on our February 2019 Wine Country Trip.

Merus is a high end boutique winery in St Helena. It is a member winery of the Foley Food and Wine Society. We were intrigued by their Cabernet and since we were members we decided to try it. Its a little bit of a drive on a curvy road to get there from where we were staying in Dry Creek Valley. John and Luciana greeted us and provided top notch service. We had a tour of the property and tasted the Chardonnay and their signature Cabernet from vintage years 2013,2014, and 2015. We had to buy one of each. You have to make an appointment to taste. It's worth the effort.

The new (low) standards of Merus
Mar 2019 • Couples
I ordered a box of wine at the end of last year and it was sent to the wrong address. Then I contacted the person that handled the order but he was leaving the company so I got caught in the transition without getting my order. The new person in charge, John Mangano finally answered my calls and agreed to send me a new box, 2 months later I still hadn't received it, he failed to ship it on 2 or 3 occasions because there was always something wrong with FedEx or the weather in Napa. Last attempt was to ship it next day (overnight) to which I said repeatedly not to send it on Friday because of the risk of it getting stuck during the weekend at a FedEx warehouse and this will defeat the purpose… guess what, yes, I was right, the box was tendered to FedEx on Friday, and got stuck at a warehouse in Memphis during the weekend and now I’m refusing the package, I called twice, sent emails and everything has being ignored… Terrible costumer service, shipping practices and nonexistent ownership and willingness to make things right. If this is any reflection of how the quality of wine will be moving forward then that is a shame.

Off the Beaten Path
Sep 2018 • Couples
Had a wonderful tasting at Merus. It is off the beaten path which is great - nice to escape the traffic on the Silverado Trail! Don't turn back your GPS is correct. It is a winding narrow road so need to be earlier on your itinerary. The main building was restored after having been abandoned during Prohibition. What is referred to as a "Ghost Winery". It's an amazing rock structure with some of the original barns nearby. They have dug a cave into Howell Mtn that houses their casks and a large tasting area you could host events in. It's very serene with a small brook running outside that is covered in blackberry vines. The grapes on the vines at the property are Zin and not used in production of Merus wines. Their grapes are brought in from a farm in Coombsville. We've had their Merus cab before and really enjoy it which is what drew us to visiting them on our trip. Merus is meant to be aged but they have another label, Altvs, that can be enjoyed right away. So you'll need (want) to buy both!

Great boutique winery in St. Helena!
Jan 2017 • Couples
Nicole met us as we arrived for our 1pm appointment. She gave us a personalized tour of the cave and the history of the winery. The tasting room is a very cool space upstairs and the wines are delicious - some of the best we had on this trip. The tasting was laid back, not rushed. Nicole was an outstanding host! We just received our shipment today and can't wait to enjoy our 2012 Altvs Cab. Definitely recommend this winery when in St. Helena!

First rate facility, first rate tasting

The winery and cave are beautiful. The tasting room tops it off. Menus wines are outstanding, but its little brother Altvs is one the most underrated wines in Napa Valley and could a first wine almost anywhere else.

Love this winery!

Merus is home to one of those cult cabernets from Napa. The winery, wine cave, and testing room are places of great beauty. Decor is exquisite. If you are into big Napa Cabs, this is a winery for you. The wines are on the pricy side and are of the sort you want to cellar for a while before drinking. Tastings are by appointment only, and you get a very personalized tour.

Great Experience off the beaten path
Apr 2016 • Couples
Merus is probably one of those that don't spring to mind when you think of the big Napa wineries, they are small production, not likely to see their wines in stores but it is a great experience. Like most of the top rated wineries you need to book in advance and in this case I recommend booking well in advance. Basically a one on one tour - Kent was our guide and he was outstanding. Tough place to find so get directions from them. Kent was there to meet us out front with a glass of chard and a tour of the facilities with discussion on their wines. We had some nice reds to taste and ended up with a couple of bottles of the ALTRS cabs from 2 different years. The tasting room is very modern, a very cool space upstairs. Kent told us bring our lunch and eat there on the patio after we finished our tour and tasting which we did and had a great time. Again if you want to try something different this is the place to go for sure.

Just great
Jan 2016 • Couples
We visited Merus on a trip that included several other top flight vineyards. First and foremost, Kent was outstanding. He was knowledgable about his product but incredibly personable and engaging. Although we have many more wineries that are very high on our list to visit, I know we will revisit Merus next year. Thank you also to Cobin who also joined us in the tasting room and added to our great experience.

Great Experience and Great Wines
Jun 2015 • Friends
Had a wonderful tour with Dana and spent time with Kent of Merus. The tour was a perfect length -getting upstairs to the main event. The wines are delicious - the best I had on this trip to Napa. The lower priced ALTVS label had some really delicious blends. The showstopper was the 2012 Merus Cab. It was the best thing we drank in Napa this trip. Recommend you go there - $50 tasting fee - but they will waive it once you buy the wines (which you will).
