Soda Lake doesn't have much water in it right now, but when it does it teams with tiny saltwater shrimp that birds eat. Soda Lake is in the Carrizo Plain National Monument, a big, dry, almost underpopulated area. If driving from SLO, use Highway 58, as it is shorter, as opposed to coming into the monument from the east via... More

It's 65 miles away from San Luis Obispo! This lake might be interesting to some people...it's part of the Carrizo Plain National Monument...but it's a 90 minute drive to the lake! The area is a semi-arid part of California with very little population. One feels like they're a million miles away from civilization and is a wonderful place for those... More

I just have to say wow. Come see it for yourself. You will see what I mean. Another one of the mysteries of San Luis Obispo County.

I've been to Soda Lake several times over the years and have enjoyed it every time. There is an overlook on a nearby hill (restroom facilities) which is a must-do. Be sure to also walk along the shore boardwalk. The lake is an Audubon "Important Bird Area" so keep an eye out for a variety of bird species. Burrowing Owls... More

It is a longer drive but make sure you come in from Highway 166 end, I think a more interesting drive. The lake is very different for our area with many birds. It is also close the the San Andreas fault line, which is interesting in its self, very visible on the eastern side of the lake.

It is a great place if you are looking for solitude. It's a trip into the remote area of California where you see very few if any people. I must say it is a little bit mystical, or at least it seemed that way the day we ventured out. If you are looking for a great day trip out from... More

Remote, dirt road access...usually dry as a bone; may be wet in winter depending on the local rainfall, about 3 inches per year. Hot in summer, but no humidity. So, BRILLIANT whiteness, animals at night, birds by day, views, heat-distorted views with photo ops, tanning ops, wildflowers in spring & early summer IF there is enough rain, bicycling, camping, hunting,... Wow I am from Florida and there is nothing here to do, only hiking in the desert and forget that unless you like to walk directly in the sun.... I love to hike but couldn't imagine spending more the 30 mins in this heat...

The Soda Lake area is fascinating and can be beautiful, depending on when you go. It's at its best in springtime, especially if we've had enough rain. Don't forget to check out the dramatic example of the San Andreas fault impact on the north side.
