We went at a time when the elephant seals were molting. Hundreds were lying on the beach in groups, sleeping, yawning, growling, changing spots, it was fascinating. You can spend as much time there as you want. And it's FREE! Just up the road (4 miles) from the Hearst Castle. Going at different times of the year will show you... More

The day was so windy and this time of year the signs say not very active but we found a group of seal that were interactive and loud and it was interesting and funny and I could have watched for hours! Def going back in Nov-Dec when the bulls are said to be there!

We were 90 minutes early for our Hearst Castle tour, so we drove four minutes down the highway to see this wonderful sight. The walkway above the beach provides a wonderful vantage point to see hundreds of elephant seals in their natural environment. There are posters to explain what you are seeing. The walkway also allows the seals to be... More

This place is a blast! You pull into a rock parking lot that is a little like the surface of the moon. Maybe you look for meters to impact or something. Just be careful if you have a car with low clearance. You get out and at once you will hear seal vocalize grunt and such and you can't see... More

You will not find anything quite like this anywhere! Elephant seals on the beach for miles and so dense they are lying on top of one another. This is April and they are molting. They lie there and flip sand over their bodies for several weeks and lose half their body weight. Some go for a swim and painfully return... More

The stop 4 miles beyond the Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Cannot mistake it b/c the barking creatures are very loud. Tons of animals across the beach. At first they all appeared dead. They soon began to perform swimming, necking with each other and dragging their bodies across the sand. They were unbelievable creatures. After visiting the castle we drove... More

I have never seen elephant seals and I must say they are fast and loud. There were so many pups around and so many adult males fighting. Nature in real life.

In April, the seals are on the beach to molt. Literally hundreds of them on the beach and you can get really close up from the boardwalk. There are helpful volunteer guides to answer any questions. There is a large parking area off Route 1. The seals are only there in these numbers during molt and breeding, so you may... More

A free attraction where you can see real-life elephant seals in the wild! What's not to love? This vista point has plenty of free parking and an amazing elevated view to the animals down below. This isn't a zoo, this is a real viewing platform with wild animals -- so don't expect to always be able to see wildlife, they... More

My best friend and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the seals! We walked along the easy path that had 3 different viewing lookouts. The first is .25, the 2nd is .83, and the 3rd is 1.09 in distance. Beautiful views! There are several turn outs to park and enjoy the seals.
