El Presidio Real is a former military installation in Santa Barbara built by the Spanish in 1782 and of which only two buildings survive to date. The large building houses a beautiful chapel. You can self guide around these sites from the outside. It's hard to imagine what the Presidio looked like in it's glory day as most of the... More

One of only 4 Presidios build as a part of the Spanish occupation of Alta California which served as a governmental center for the area from San Luis Obispo to Los Angeles and housed military personnel to provide security for the Mission.

In the heart of an upscale part of Santa Barbara is El Presidio. El Presidio is an old fort from the late 1700's that the Spanish built. It was a hot day when we visited and it is amazing how the adobe walls kept the inside cooler than many air conditioned, modern houses. You can see how the early Spanish... More

I love history so it was great to walk through and learn the history of this building. That we saw a building originally built in early 1800's was so interesting to see the old adobe building.

My wife and I had looked forward to this visit because we had a great experience in Monterey's equivalent area. The short version is that this place is not worthy of being described as an historic park. Some of the exhibits are obviously faked replicas, the place is untidy and scruffy and the overall impression is a lack of care.... More

We walked through the El Presidio on a warm afternoon and found it to be just average. Would I go again? No...but I am glad we did it while visiting Santa Barbara.

Well maintained, nicely presented and interesting to learn more about the history of the area. Free parking and good restaurants close by as well.

If you are interested in early California mission era history, this is a nice stop. We have visited many of these throughout the state and each one brings a small piece of California history with it and tells an interesting story. The ongoing restoration and preservation work is laudable. There are other historic sites in the nearby area.

Like so many other places, this state historic park, was thought of after most of the original buildings were destroyed in the name of progress. The introductory film here and at SB mission give you a good idea of how lucky they are to have a few buildings from the time of SB settlement. They are working hard to make... More
