Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Sonoma Barracks were built to house Mexican army troops under the command of General Vallejo. You can see the interior of the barracks and the courtyard. No entrance fee. If you are a California history buff, it might be interesting for you.

This is a nice small area where one can familiarize themselves with local history. The barracks have been well preserved from the outside, and photograph well. They reminded us of the barracks at the Alamo. There is a nice courtyard in the back, as well as a room where a short and interesting video about the history here, is continuously being shown. In this room, there are also nice exhibits from local schools. I don't know if these change, but right now, they are about the California Missions.
At the front of the barracks, one room is replicated to show how these soldiers lived. Another room, has exhibits and information boards. Also, there is the loveliest Gift Store. No junk. Really nice quality items and books, mainly about the various California Missions.
The really very interesting thing here is that the original state flag of California (with the bear) was made here in June of 1846. It flew over Sonoma until July 9, 1846, when it was replaced by the Stars and Stripes. Later, the Bear Flag was transferred to San Francisco, where it was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. The flag you see here is a copy.

Walking distance from the Plaza, it's not big, but the visit was well worthy. It's important to learn and understand the history of California, and it's wonderful to see the California Republic flag in person, not just from a T-shirt.

Nothing particularly special but worth a walk through if you visited the mission next door. It has a few interesting exhibits discussing the not so well known Bear Flag Revolt.

The barracks and the Mission are side by side as are old building in this town where the last Mission was built. A very walkable city proud to safeguard its Native, Spanish and Mexican heritages.

I did not know that Sonoma had a historical place, this barracks was part of California's history. Tours are available, but not really necessary. While we were there they had a wedding in the center part. Mexican troops were up this high during the war.

Operated as a California State Park, admission to the Sonoma Barracks also gives you admission to the Sonoma Mission across the street, and the Vallejo House a couple of blocks away.
Historical displays will be of special interest to your elementary aged children (4th grade is the year California history is presented).

Interesting well preserved Barracks and out buildings. Part of the Sonoma State Historic Park. There is also a very well preserved small cannon in the breezeway of the barracks.

If you visit Sonoma you should definitely plan on visiting the Barracks. This is a free historical site managed by the CA Parks Department. There is a very informative video presentation which details the history of the area, tracing its roots back to Mexico and Spain. It also gives you a flavor of why this area was so important to trade and commerce. Lastly there is a small gift shop to pick up souvenirs and trinkets. Plan on spending no more that 1 -2 hours.
