"Follow 5N01." Sounds easy! It wasn't too bad. I downloaded offline maps with waypoints in my outdoor tracking app. That made it easy! The road is paved about half way. The rest is fairly good graded dirt and gravel. But the underlying granite pokes out here and there and provides some bumps. There are numerous meadows and gorgeous views. Many... More

We never would have reached or destination if it wasn't for the very nice park rangers who gave us a map and directed us. You just have to trust following the main path 5N01 and not go anywhere else. This path includes dirt roads for 4x4's (although I drive a Mitsubishi Galant) and driving THROUGH the river twice...a scary venture... More

Be sure to stop in at the Summit ranger station at Pinecrest junction on highway 108 to get a map, check the road conditions, and detailed directions. It is not hard to get to but off the road aways. Be sure to get careful driving instructions and then take a scenic journey through the Sierra to this out of the way, not much visited, very old tree. Ponder why this tree has lived so long at this very site. If around, chat with the caretaker, an interesting man.
