Lovey park, lots of nice walks, trees are beautiful. The information building is a great stop, the drive is amazing. Lots of pull offs to let commuters pass (locals get to see these trees every day LOL).

Lovely campground, very nice staff and facilities were nice. Being in the middle of the Redwoods was an unforgettable experience. There is a town north about 20 minutes away that has all the restaurants and stores you need. Ave of the Giants is here, so we were able to do a lot of hiking and sightseeing with this as our basecamp.

Humboldt Redwoods State Park is located along the Eel River in northern California. This massive state park contains some of the world's most majestic ancient redwood groves. We drove slowly through the beautiful park in a two hour personal detour. We saw some of the more than 250 camp sites. We were enjoying the scenic 32-mile Avenue

I strongly recommend visiting Redwood NP and SP because of their immense and unique beauty. Over the course of a few years, I spent about 30 days in the Northern California Redwood parks and still don’t feel like I've seen everything.
Humboldt Redwoods State Park is one of the best in the group of parks. It has outstanding hiking trails and some of the biggest and tallest redwoods.
No less than that, I found the rangers in the park to be outstanding help and support for the tourists.
However, Erin Gates stands out from others because she went far and beyond her duties when she found me in a difficult circumstance.
Before even communicating with her, I had been observing how she was communicating with visitors. Almost every group was stopping her with some questions, and Erin was taking the time to answer all questions thoroughly.
Besides being a helpful and passionate person, she showed herself to be a very educated and knowledgeable specialist. During my time spent with Erin, I was impressed by her deep connection with the natural and cultural environment she works in. Her vast knowledge of the history of the park as well as her understanding of the complex problems the National Park system is facing was refreshing.
Erin Gates’s willingness to help, her desire to be a part of nature conservation, her ability to connect with both people and nature, and her strong sense of responsibility made me happy that the SP and NP system has workers like her.
Thank you very much, Erin.

This is a must do to drive this route, “Avenue of The Giants” and see these ancient, massive Redwoods. To walk amongst them withtheir canopies 300 feet up from the floor of the forest was astonishing. There’s a number of places to stop to take pictures but would advise doing a walk into the forest. It’s just so quiet and peaceful, not even any bird song. To think some of trees are 500 - 800 + years old, it’s genuinely a humbling experience.

I think that I was here once when I was a kid. We decided to do a weekend trip to Eureka and spent a day at Redwood Humboldt State Park. I'm so glad that we did. We did a nature walk at Founders Grove with Seven, a California Park Ranger. She was terrific. She shared a lot of interesting information with us and answered all of our questions. She had us view the surroundings from different perspectives, like looking up and turning in a circle which was something we wouldn't have thought of on our own. We also hiked at Drury Chaney Grove and to Giant Tree, Tall Tree and Flatiron Tree. It was a great day!

We had the greatest experience at this state park! My brother, my husband, and our two kids stayed at the Albee Creek Campground using both tent and van accommodations. This campsite was remote enough that you really got to feel like you were 'out in the elements' without having to hike in. The road to get there was 1.5 car widths, so RVs and large trailers weren't able to get in, leaving you with only other tent and small vehicle campers.
The campground itself was beautiful! The fields surrounding one side of the campground are covered with overgrown orchard trees - which meant we got a front row seat at seeing plenty of deer and a couple of bears during our one night stay!
We will definitely be returning to this campsite when we have more time to complete the hikes.

The Avenue of the Giants takes you through much of the park. Be certain to stop at the visitor center; you’ll get good suggestions on sites and hiking opportunities. If you’re up for about a 2 mile hike consider combining Founders Grove Loop with Mayan Plaque Loop. This offer a great redwood experience. It’s an easy hike that is largely flat, but you’ll experience protruding roots particularly on the Mayan Loop Trail.

So many giant trees, not enough time to see them all! Got lucky camping as it is very busy and full and difficult to nail down a spot without reservations but worked out fine. Stayed in Albee Creek Campground and a nearby horse camp that let us in late in the day since they had some empty spots. Hiked bull creek north and south through the Rockefeller forest all day long and could have stayed for days! Hope to make it back again someday and explore more.

This is a great park for visiting the Redwoods. They have a fine visitor center that is most helpful in selecting spots to best see these giants, and the visitors center is open and practicing protective measures during the virus. They have good maps and will provide helpful directions. This is your CA taxes being well spent.

Has anyone stayed at the Burlington campground in space #1 or #4, if so how was the space?

Have there been recent bear sightings in the park? I've never camped in bear country before so welcome any tips to ease the anxiety! Staying 2 nights later this month in the Hidden Springs campground.

We’ve been to the park hiking many times but not camping. Whenever we go, we stop to talk to the rangers before proceeding. They have the current info on conditions including cougars and bears. In general, we always travel with bear spray as an extra precaution especially when in the more remote areas, but the rangers are your most reliable source of bear info for your camping stay.

Is there a bad time visit and see these massive beautiful trees? Are the trees beautiful green all year round? I’m thinking about a trip out in a couple of weeks- mid February. Thoughts? Thanks!!!

Visited there in September. The trees should be beautiful year round. It's a great place to visit. The redwoods will take your breath away with their stature and beauty!

Hi. I'm looking for a great place to swim on the river for a day (no camping). Any suggestions?
Written 16 July 2019
Sorry. We did a drive through the park and were not looking at swimming spots. Great park and nice diner stop at the south entrance.

Has anyone from CA been here to tell me what would be the nearest airport to fly into and also is this park open in Feb. Making plans for the trip. Thanks.
Written 1 June 2019
The nearest airport is in Eureka, about 25 miles from the park. United is the only airline available. Arcata-Eureka Airport. The nearest full service airport is Stockton, just about 5 hours away. The park is open all year and you can enter from either north or south. Nice restaurant at the south entrance.

Hello, just wanting to know where to best tent camping spots are located in the Humboldt State Park area.? We have never been so don’t know anything about the area. Also, I have to ask because where I’m from we don’t have bears near us. Is it safe to tent camp with bears in the area?
Thanks

Greetings Rough...., We have always stayed at Hidden Springs campground. We have never had problems with bears. You have to be "Bear Aware" in the way you handle food and additional "scented" items that will attract bears. Keep all such items in the bear lockers provided in the campground or locked away inside your car. Keep coolers hidden as bears know what a cooler is and what it usually contains. As long as you follow the guidelines you will not have any problems with our furry friends. I have read that there is paving taking place in August, 2018. As a result there may not be reservations taken for some campsites so I recommend you contact Humboldt State Park and see if all sites are first come, first served or if there is something you can lock into before you hit the road. KNOW WHAT IS HAPPENING BEFORE YOU START DRIVING!!! If you cannot make reservations then you will probably have to check into a campground early in order to get an available site. The later you wait in a first come, first served situation the fewer the sites will be that are available. Weekends, Friday, Saturday and Sunday will probably be the busiest days for finding a campsite. Plan early and keep as little smelly stuff around and you will be fine. Enjoy Humboldt, it is an amazing place. Look for banana slugs.....they are really creepy and really cool! Cheers, Rich

How long does it take to drive through The Avenue of the Giants with frequent stops? We will be coming from the South. Did you go to the Redwood national park and the Prairie Creek Redwoods also. How much time should we allow to spend in each park? Thanks

I have traveled both ways. To do the full Ave. it runs about 2 hours.
My recommendation:
Stop at Richardson Grove on the way up.
Skip the first half of the Ave. and get off at Myers Flat.
The first half isn't very interesting and it starts to wear on you before you get to the good stuff.
The last time I went there I started at the North end and it was amazing. You are immediately in the big trees.
The Visitor center is worth stopping at. There is an interesting display about Rockefeller donating the money to save this part of the Redwoods.

Is there any place in the park or Forrest where we can dry camp with a generator? We have a 30 ft travel trailer

Sorry, we did not camp- but the Rangers there are very knowledgeable about all tourist queries! Contact them through the website.

We stayed at the Best Western in nearby Fortuna. Up to date, very comfortable and exceptionally clean rooms. Eel River Brewery in Fortuna a short walk for fun meal with good beverages. Would be very long trip from SF.
