Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It’s OK… there are much more beautiful lakes in Colorado, particularly in Rocky Mountain State Park. I would NOT go out of your way just to visit this lake (especially if you didn’t get Mt Blue Sky permits or it’s 2025 when Mt Blue Sky is closed). You are better off driving to Dillon Reservoir’s Sapphire Point Overlook. Trust me on this.

Echo Lake Park is a park located along the Mount Evans Scenic Byway, which goes through awesome landscape and is worth the drive all by itself. Features a beautiful alpine lake, with two picnic areas, and a lodge/gift shop nearby. Ducks, various small birds and even some deer can be seen around the park area. I went in May, but the Mount Evans road was still closed, and there was some old snow in some areas. Bring a jacket, because it is considerably cooler up than at Idaho Springs at the start of this scenic road.

We love to visit in summer and also fall when the aspen are changing. The lake has great picnic areas and wonderful hiking trails that can be hiked for their entire length or shorter hikes. The views of Mt. Evans are spectacular! There is a lodge at one end of the lake which has a restaurant and a gift store with a variety of merchandise. The drive to the lake is beautiful and the road on up to the top of Mt. Evans takes off near the lodge and is quite a thrill to drive the narrow road. Wild goats and bighorn sheep are prevalent on the road and the views from the top are spectacular! A great place to visit for the day!

We were lucky enough to get a parking spot, so we stopped and took a walk around the lake. We were lucky enough to spot a bald eagle!

Beautiful mountain lake with great picnic spots. Some of the best trails in Colorado surround the lake. Awesome views of the Rockies and Mt. EVANS.

Absolutely beautiful mountain Lake! We visited Octo 2019 and the lake was frozen but it was still super cool to be able to run on the iced lake, and the snow and views were absolutely breathtaking! Want to come back when there is no snow on the ground as well to experience this gem!
Definitely visit if you are close by!

Stopped by here as part of our daily tour of the area. We stopped at a parking lot and did an hour hike with our group of 8. What a lovely park and even though we took a short hike, it really was beautiful. It was so lovely and peacefully quiet. Would love to do more hiking there when in the area again.

If you are thinking about heading up to Echo Lake I heard the other day that road is closed. So you can go over the pass, but you'll have to stop at the lodge if you stop at all.

There is a lot to see walking around the lake and above it on the hiking trails.
You have to take the camera!
It's a beautiful lake which looks even better in sunset.
I recommend this place.

We stopped at Echo Lake before heading over to hike the Chief Mountain Trail. The trail head used to be quite close to the lake, but now the starting point is farther up the road; stop and ask at the info. booth at the entrance to Mt. Evans scenic highway. The Chief Mountain hike has a deceptively slow, steep incline but it is never really grueling. Fantastic payoff at the top. Great, fairly short hike with outstanding views!

I'm planning on going in early February. I just want to get as far as the lake. Is there anything I should know as someone completely unfamiliar with the area?

Hello, I am traveling to Denver Colorado next week and have an afternoon to do some sight seeing. I would like to travel to Echo Lake on the scenic road. For those of you who have visited Echo Lake Park, is it possible to drive there and back to Denver in 6 or 7 hours? and what is the most scenic route from Denver? Is the route open this time of year? (Weather Related Closings?). Any information would help me plan my afternoon. Thanks SO much!

From downtown Denver, Echo Lake is only @ 1hr, 15 min.- 1 and 1/2 hrs depending on which route. I personally take visitors up the Mt. Vernon Canyon via I-70 West to the Evergreen/El Rancho exit(252). This will take you by Mother Cabrini Shrine, Lookout Mountain, Buffalo Bill's grave/ museum and the buffalo herd overlook. El Rancho has a nice brewery right at the exit or continue towards Evergreen, a beautiful mountain town, @ 4 miles just past Bergen Park where you'll come to a light at Squaw Pass Road( road to Mt. Evans). Take a right and stay on it @ 20 min. all the way to Echo Lake. There are several scenic pull-offs/picnic areas on way and you can park either at the Gift shop or at the end of Echo Lake. Very nice trail around the lake- less than a mile of easy walking. When you're done, I'd suggest you get back on the road and head down the mountain to Idaho Springs- a really neat old mining town worth walking around. Just get on I-70 EAST from there and you'll be back in Denver in less than an hour. Could also do a side trip to our 2 gambling towns( Blackhawk and Central City) which are just past Idaho Springs on your way back.
The roads are all open except to Mt. Evans itself and the forecast is for 70's most of next week. Enjoy!
