Great Local Art Center
Apr 2021
Take a gallery tour of the Art center and sign up for a wide selection of classes. Rotating exhibitions on a regular schedule and very friendly staff.

Not just a gallery
Apr 2017 • Couples
This is a wonderful resource for our area. Not only is it a gallery (and I can spend hours here looking at all the paintings, ceramics, sculpture. pretty much any visual art) - it is also an education center.

People of all ages are encouraged to exhibit their art. And there are classes for people of all ages and abilities.

My husband took a class about working with slab clay. He had a wonderful time and ended up with a lovely vase. More than that, he ended up with a real appreciation of what it takes to make a vase like that.

Everytime we go to an exhibit here, we learn more about art and therefore enjoy it more.

It is well worth your while to go to one of the First Friday events, but there are on going exhibits you can view. And go to their webpage to see a list of lectures, events and classes. The more you go, the more you learn and enjoy.

I love museums
Aug 2016 • Friends
I love museums and gallery work, but skip this place. It is a gallery to sale art from locals. I went in and found a piece I liked and wanted to purchase it for a gift. The item was framed and matted amateurishly. The slits at the matting corners from imprecise cuts drew the eye away from the artwork and the frame corners were skewed and detracting. I asked to purchase just the art work. In a very unpleasant voice, the woman in charge of sales told me I had to take the item as is. The cost of re-matting and re-framing the piece would add another $100-150 to the cost and the piece was not worth $400. I contacted the Center and complained about the terrible policy and the worse service, no one returned my call.

Nice, small art center for Western Colorado
Apr 2016 • Family
This art center has special exhibits and events, and has areas for instruction, as well. Unfortunately, it doesn't provide enough variety for viewing often....except for special events. A larger museum with additional opportunities for educational and cultural purposes would be welcome. The classes are really too expensive for many, so minimizes art appreciation for the larger community.

Robert, Thank you for your visits to The Art Center. It sounds like you have attended festive First Friday events. I want to say we do our best to keep class costs reasonable. We do our best to hit the right mark for the our members, students in general, and the teachers. Also we are in the process of a facility analysis in order to strategically prepare for the future. We could use more space to feature our significant permanent collection and other offerings as you suggest. Thank you for your support. The Art Center has a proud history in Grand Junction. In fact, we just released a detailed history of the art center online. We invite everyone to go to Wikipedia and search for Western Colorado Center for the Arts. Mikkel Kelly Executive Director

We often try to take in the Art Center on First Friday events. A lovely time with wine and appetizers and a chance to enjoy the art and friends.

Cultural Delight

Despite being busy with preparations for the annual art auction which features a juried selection of more than 60 regional artists, several staff at the art center including Mikkel, the director, warmly welcomed us and showed us through the museum and answered our questions. We were amazed with the scope of classes and programs available. Be sure to see the permanent collection, which displays historic Native American weavings and pottery. A visit is well worth your time!

We were over from Denver and wanted to check out this little art center. It was a very pleasant surprise. First, it wasn't little; second, the art was very well displayed and offered a variety of local art.

A really pleasant surprise
Feb 2016 • Family
Our visit to the Western Colorado Art Center was a really pleasant surprise. When you walk in, there is a well laid out gift store and one of the better collections of historic Native American pottery as part of their permanent exhibit. What we were most impressed with was their current exhibit called "Eloquent Forms" by Terry Sheperd and Jared Davis. Terry is the ceramics instructor and I understand his classes are always packed . He shows his new works each year in conjunction with another potter. The quality and uniqueness of the pieces were incredible! And the prices...... Let's just say they were way more reasonable than Denver or Santa Fe/ Taos. Ever changing, quality art and once a month Friday hors d'oeuvres and wine in conjunction new displays. The vibe is great. Wish some of the pieces weren't already sold. I would have snatched them up in a heartbeat!

Enjoyed recent visit to the Western Colorado Center for the Arts
Jan 2016 • Family
I was fortunate enough to visit the Western Colorado Center for the Arts in Grand Junction recently. The town is lovely and there is a very strong art community and artistic feeling to the town. The Art Center is an integral part of that artistic feeling. I thoroughly enjoyed the ceramics exhibit, which featured local artists, as well as the photography exhibit. And it is not just the exhibits that are impressive, it is that the museum provides so many channels for local participation in classes for pottery and drawing, and events that make it such a strong support network for many people to not only enjoy viewing the exhibits, but opens doors to be a part of that community. I highly recommend a visit to the Western Colorado Center for the Arts. The gift shop is also very well done and has lots of gems.
