Recently bought a vacation home in Monte Vista, and was so pleased with the beauty of this nearby National Oark.

The train ride from Alamosa to the top of LaVeta Pass for a Flying W Wranglers concert was relaxing. We were able to sit back and enjoy the scenery and visit with other travelers as well as the train personnel. We even met the Wranglers themselves on the way back.

Great place to hike and cross-country ski. Pick up maps at a National Forest Service Office and check out the many trails in the Forest. Make sure you take plenty of water when you hike or ski. The altitude and lack of humidity can cause problems for people not prepared. The forest has many scenic trails and panoramic views.

Hit the dunes. Bring something to slide on, a towel and flip flops for the creek...refreshing after a hike to the top. Keep the kids very close if the wind comes up. Great camping in the park.

This forest was beautiful, especially this year with all the snow. Everything was beautifully green.

Hiked in the South San Juan Wilderness Area, which is part of the Rio Grande National Forest. Started at Three Forks Trail Head to Blue Lake (Day 1); Blue Lake to Lake Ann (Day 2) ; Lake Ann back to trail head (Day 3). There is good trout fishing at Blue Lake. The hike on the Continental Divide is gorgeous.... More
