- chris b22 contributionsHappy atmosphere and tranquil settingBeautiful Manor house once owned by Jane Austen's brother Edward, whose adoptive family were the Knights. Still owned by them. Peaceful and tranquil with a relaxed atmosphere and very knowledgeable, pleasant guides, who are obviously proud of their charge. Rooms are full of character. Library is extensive and in use as a library with reading room for scholars (upstairs). Emphasis throughout the house on female endeavours that weren't always considered fitting at the time.Hi Christina, Thank you very much for visiting Chawton House, we are pleased to hear you had a great time and enjoyed quite a few aspects of the House! We do hope to see you again soon.Written 16 October 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 3 October 2023
- Poppy B18 contributionsFar more beautiful and engaging than Jane Austen's cottage?!Chawton House has it all - it's been a warm spirited, family home for 500 years, with amazing history and artefacts - wonderful grounds (dogs welcome); regularly changing exhibitions celebrating the largely unacknowledged contribution of women to our society; a very close link with one of the most famous authors of all time; AND a great kitchen cafe. It's at the end of a no-through road, but plenty of parking at the top of the drive (and some disabled parking behind the house itself) so THIS should be your first port of call when you come to Chawton ... and yes, do by all means pop in to JA's cottage if you have time afterwards?!Good afternoon Poppy, Thank you so much for your very thoughtful and kind review of your visit. We are delighted that you had a great time here at Chawton House, and experienced all that we offer to our customers! We hope you liked it that much that you do come again and see some friendly faces!Written 16 October 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 9 October 2023

She was simply awesome, kind, caring and really attentive! Great coffee and Cake. Wendy is a fount of knowledge and talked us through so much history. We were so impressed we purchased an annual ticket. Linda was attentive and helpful and we saw the library , incredible body of rare books. Including Louise Bourgeois book of midwifery and women’s health dating 1600’s. As a midwife myself this was a real eye opener. Thank you for showing us the spirit marks… definitely felt the presence of the witches ! We will be back soon 😊Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 November 2023

Make sure to see the library ( you need to get access for this by asking at the gift shop) Distance wise a pleasant stroll from Jane Austen's House.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 November 2023

We visited on a quiet day and one of the volunteers in the house was very enthusiastic and talked to us about the history of the house and family for quite a while. We had the best mocha we’ve ever had in the cafe and stayed for the glimmering gardens at dusk which were lovely to see.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 January 2024

- T MLondon, United Kingdom2 contributionsGreat day outWe went on a garden tour with the head gardener. Despite the horrible weather we really enjoyed our tour and the snowdrops. We also visited the house and the tearoom. Delicious food and cakes in a relaxed atmosphere. The volunteers were really engaging and informative. We spent about 4 hours in total ambling round including tearoom stops but could easily combine with a visit to Jane Austin's house just a short walk away.Thank you very much for visiting Chawton House and booking onto one of the Garden Tours with Julia, we are truly happy that you enjoyed your tour and extended your visit by stopping by and having lunch in the Tearoom and had a great time looking around the House! My family were related to the Knights and seeing all the paintings and the knowledge shared by the guides was fascinating. I think this is best enjoyed without small children but then I am an old fossil! The church is also a must. We had already visited Jane Austen's House the week before.Hi Marco, We are thrilled you visited Chawton House and had a great experience here with the staff and volunteers, too. - PatriciaViner2 contributionsBeautiful old house with lovely gardens and a great tearoomThis is a beautiful old house with really helpful volunteers on hand to tell visitors about its history. Fascinating details throughout, but the portraits of influential women from the past were particularly interesting, together with their stories. The library is an amazing treasure and the gardens in March were aglow with daffodils. We rounded off our visit with lunch in the excellent tearoom, delicious. This house is a real treasure, go and have a look for yourself.Hi Patricia, Thank you very much for visiting Chawton House and leaving a lovely review. - AvidTraveler12Winchester, United Kingdom1,833 contributionsMost EnjoyableThe estate has been owned by the Knight family since 1551, although the house was built in 1850. The house was made famous by Jane Austen as the house she lived in is in the same village and she referred to Chawton House as the "great house" Chawton House is very much a famous house in its own right, it has an extensive library holding a large collection of books by female authors. The grounds are extensive with fields of snowdrops, care is needed as parts of the grounds are very muddy underfoot at the moment.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 March 2024

Had a very interesting visit to Chawton House earlier today (despite the inclement weather!). We booked a timed ticket and reserved a table in the Kitchen Tearoom.
This place is steeped in the history of Jane Austen and her family. It was wonderful that there was so much to read up about, particularly regarding female authors around the time of the Georgian/Regency periods. A fascinating era of history. The house, which was originally Tudor, having been restored over the years is well-maintained and in pristine condition. It was indeed a pleasure to look around. The staff here were welcoming and lovely! All necessary precautions observed.
Only slight criticism was I found the menu in the tearoom a bit limiting (I have allergies) but, given these difficult times, it's to be expected. They were open - grateful for that. Hubby was happy enough though.
Unfortunately, whilst we should have liked a stroll around the grounds, the weather (heavy wind and rain) precluded that. Will definitely go back in better weather.
They are open 7 days a week at the moment too!

Hi Amber,
Thank you so much for taking time to leave this wonderful review and we are so happy that you enjoyed your visit - as you rightly point out, the house is steeped in so much history, both Austen-related and otherwise so there is lots to find out.
Hopefully you will be able to visit the gardens soon, if the weather holds out - we've been busy installing a spooky trail for Halloween and the trees are currently at that magnificent red stage of Autumn.
Our Tearoom food is cooked fresh on-site by a small but dedicated team and so, while the selection is fairly small, it does change seasonally.
All the best and we hope to see you again soon!
Louisa and the Chawton House team.

Totally unexpected, the view of the House from the drive is serialised, the House and proximity of Rectory as fictionalised by Austen work is a reality. I was expecting the same old House experience of walking around either unaided or with audio, the shop and walk around Gardens, mundane experience. Complete opposite, greeted by wonderful team of staff, experienced guides and homage to Austen, lovely costumes, valuable insight. I was about to leave the property and Katy who grabbed the keys to open the library up to show the library and again expecting to see the same old House collection of books and sofas and seats actually entered a working private library and there continued insight learning and discussion about the collection which is a unique experience and memorable for learning. This house was on my list for years to visit staycation has prioritsed domestic travel, I would put this house and experience in my top five house experiences in Britain.

Claire’s workshop was brilliant- I managed to join before lockdown and was amazed how much I learnt. Claire is a talented photographer and inspirational teacher. She is very generous in sharing her professional knowledge so you can take some fantastic shots in the magical Chawton house grounds. I’d highly recommend this workshop for anyone just starting out or wanting to improve their photography skills,

As a Jane Austen fan, I was drawn to the great house, and was not at all disappointed. There was plenty of information on how the Austen family related to the house. More impressively, the articles and artifacts held the attention of my partner, who knows nothing of Jane Austen’s works. There were displays of art that the staff made during lockdown that was all very impressive, and an exhibit about horticulture. The house shows many examples of how women have participated in the history of the area. And finally the grounds were beautiful. A lovely morning spent!

The house is amazing - beautiful and interesting, with a great collection. And the staff and volunteers are superb. Caught out with unexpected torrential rain, not enough umbrellas between us, and no taxis available for several hours, Linda, a volunteer, gave us a lift to the station. She went above and beyond for a group of damp tourists - please commend and thank her for us! Both she, and Chawton House, are gems.

If you're looking for a place that blends history, literature, and an unforgettable atmosphere, I highly recommend visiting Chawton House in Alton. It's the former home of Jane Austen’s brother, and you can immerse yourself in the life and legacy of the Austen family. The house and estate are beautifully preserved, and the staff and volunteers are incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. They make history come alive, offering deep insights into the family's life and the literary heritage of Jane Austen.
The setting itself is peaceful and picturesque, and the food and hot chocolate deluxe in the café are delicious, adding a perfect touch to the visit. If you’re a fan of history, literature, or simply want to experience something meaningful and memorable, Chawton House is a must-see. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after you leave.

Lovely day out! Staff couldn’t have been more helpful and were really knowledgable about the house. The library was gorgeous and the guide told us heaps about it. Gardens were beautiful and dog friendly. The tea room did a fab packed lunch for £7 - kids were delighted - baguettes, crisps, fruit, piece of a home-made cake and a drink. Coffee was good too. Would definitely recommend. Not just for Jane Austen enthusiasts!

An incredible place, so much history and so inter- twind with the Austen family, from the Knight family odopting Jane's brother Edward, if they had a child of their own things eoukd have been different for the austen family.
The staff are so knowledgeable and dress up in period costume, and fully emurse themselves in the culture. No hand shaking, for a lady it's a little dip at the waist, for men a small bow.
See the corner where Jsne use to sit and read, the library.

Visited nearby Chawton House for the first time today and what an absolute gem it is! From our initial welcome and introduction to the house to our most enjoyable cream tea in the Courtyard we felt like valued visitors. We found the house itself extremely interesting and gave more background to the life of Jane Austen and her family.
The staff were most informative and really went the extra mile to ensure a rewarding visit.
Many thanks Chawton House!
