About
Enjoy million-dollar views along this 25-mile highway that hugs the side of the mountain. It connects the Colorado towns of Silverton and Ouray while taking you past dramatic landscapes, from pine forests, valleys, and gorges to the snowcapped San Juan Mountains. The road is marked by hairpin turns, narrow lanes, steep drop-offs, and a lack of guardrails at some points, so drive carefully. A self-guided audio tour might help—you'll get to tidbits of the area's history along the way, too. There are cabins and camping areas where you can stay the night; you can also explore historic landmarks like the Ironton Townsite or hike to the summit of the surrounding peaks. – Tripadvisor

- DebiNekoosa, Wisconsin24 contributionsAmazing drive! Do not miss this!!Do not miss this! The views are amazing! There are places without guardrails. If you’re afraid of heights, I’d say driving from Silverton to Ouray is better for the passenger. It was not as scary as I anticipated, and totally worth it! The driver really has to keep their eyes on the road, so they will miss some of the sights. 25 miles goes by really fast!Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 September 2023
- Javier C2 contributionsBucketlist ✔️Mission accomplished: drove the million$$ highway and in December! (And I'm from South Texas) First- the views, the scenery, the drive is indescribable. Beautiful & awe inspiring to say the least. The highway is well maintained. The best part is the final stretch from Silverton to Ouray (and first part returning from Ouray). Slow & steady wins. My wife who is afraid of heights had her side window open throughout the ride. Respect the road, observe speed limits & don't be intimidated by the highway nor those speedsters that have driven this beautiful road a few times. No 4x4, offroad required for normal conditions. Again, the highway is well maintained & most folks are respectful, driving to enjoy this gorgeous part of Colorado.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 December 2023
- grandmalovestravlingHilliard, Florida232 contributionsWOW!In April, we got on this road by accident because GPS gave us two options and we chose the shortest one. When we started up, it had been raining and then began snowing and the snow got heavier the higher we got. We never went over 20 mph going up and sometimes it was about 10mph around the corners. We were scared we would slip off the edge! Windows started fogging up, the temperature dropped to 28 degrees as we ascended. Husband was driving, he did a great job, however I was a basket case. Could hardly look anywhere but straight ahead or down into the car. We are two 70-somethings from Florida and have never driven in ice and snow. Made it to Silverton and stopped at a gas station. Owner said people stop there all the time, white knuckled and shaking from the trip. I have since seen beautiful pictures of the road we traveled and it is indeed beautiful, and the snow was enjoyed more on the way down to Durango as we were then on the inside, next to the mountain and you could enjoy the ride a little more. Would I do it again, no. We even talked to some people that were in Durango to ride the train that lived in Grand Junction and they said that they go around, not over the mountain.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 May 2024
- Susanne TNorth Carolina Mountains, North Carolina1,917 contributionsBeautiful drive! The day we drove the Million Dollar Hwy, we had everything from dry weather to rain, sleet and snow. It was still absolutely beautiful and we enjoyed all the pull-outs and the (sometimes limited (due to fog or snow)) views. Please be careful and obey the speed limit; on this road it is there for a reason. The road is open for all cars and we saw 18-Wheelers, campers, motorhomes and all kinds of cars and motorcycles, so don't worry about what kind of vehicle you are driving.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 June 2024
- laurapaul2018Compton, Canada151 contributionsA Million Different viewsThe climb and switchbacks and views are all very impressive, not for the faint of heart but totally worth the drive, relax and enjoy! Lots of ups and downs and twists and turns and changes in elevations. Nothing at Baker's Bridge that we saw of too much interest.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 July 2024
- Vince GPottsville, Texas169 contributionsBeautifulWe travel a lot, and always travel designated scenic routes if possible. This is one at he top of our list. There are many pullouts where you can pull over and let the locals pass by if you are taking your time, so don't get in a hurry. The views are beautiful everywhere, and there is quite a bit of wildlife if that is what you like. If you are in the area, do not miss this.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 July 2024
- Jaskel08California355 contributionsBeyond breathtaking!Beyond breathtaking. Definitely a must do! We traveled in the morning from Ouray to Durango. The highlight (most scenic) part of the trip was definitely between Ouray and Silverton. The highway is located on the side of a cliff within a narrow chasm/canyon that is surrounded by vertical peaks of 13,000 ft elevation. IMO, driving southbound is less nerve wracking then driving northbound. Just south of Ouray is Bear Creek Falls. There’s a turnout on the east side of the highway from which to check it out. Well paved, well maintained, mostly no barriers between the road and the cliff. Definitely watch the speed limit signs. I don’t believe the speed limit went over 40 MPH between Ouray and Silverton…… with many sections at 25 or 30 MPH. There are periodic turnouts for sightseeing. There are also plenty of passing lanes…. To pass those who are going atypically slow. Tip….. make sure you fill up your gas tanks. There were not many gas stations between Durango and Ouray.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 July 2024
- okeydokey-paPennsylvania118 contributionsBeautiful Scenery...scary drivingWe flew into the Montrose Airport for our stay in Durango. The views on this road are unbelievable! The driving is very scary. As most reviewers state, lots of switchbacks and steep drop offs. I went slow and if there were vehicles behind me, I usually found a safe spot to pull off and let them pass. On the way back to the airport after our vacation, we unfortunately had rain and fog. Then this road was terrifying. We had 2 vehicles in our family travelling this road. I did ok. But the 2nd person was petrified. She is a city girl, so this road really freaked her out. If we ever go to Durango again, I would probably find an alternate route or alternate airport. If I was staying in Ouray and didn't have to travel the whole road, I probably would do this again and stop at the wonderful areas.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 August 2024
- Jane E49 contributionsKeep Calm and don't exaggerate the hypeThe views were amazing and the drive (Ouray to Durango) was not nearly as bad as I expected based on online comments. We were on the land side most of the drive, but even in the reverse direction, there are guardrails on the worst of the curves. Probably not for people troubled by heights but absolutely not the worst drive we did here in ColoradoVisited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 September 2024

Wonderful drive, incredible scenery, but allow for extra time if you have to be somewhere on time.
The only problem was getting behind a slow driver ( the speed limits are already slow). It is very difficult to pass anyone.
We got caught behind people driving under the speed limits. There would be 10-12 cars creeping behind a slow driver.
The views were unbelievable and well worth the drive.

This is the most spectacular road I've ever been on. I've driven through the alps and this was even more amazing. However, I will also add, it's the only time in my life I've literally been frozen with fear (fortunately I was a passenger, not driver!) . We were at one particularly treacherous point and a storm suddenly appeared which was not in the forecast. There was hail, lightening, and freezing rain. We finally found a point to pull off and made it through the route to Silverton. It was terrifying, but even the storm was spectacular since we were in the middle of the clouds with the storm surrounding us. Despite this, I recommend that if you are brave and don't have acrophobia, the views are worth it.

We drove there with our four kids that from time to time pick their heads up from the devices and looked at the view, but me and my wife did not care, we loved it. It stretches for 50 miles but the best part is closer to Silverton and was the most breathtaking view of it all.
Drive slowly and enjoy the view, stop at any stop area that you want and have fun, don't rush the road.
It is a must see if you are in the area.

Every Fall we drive this route down to Durango. Every year it is magnificent. The colors are beyond beautiful and the weather can change at anytime. I have been there in the month of September and it snowed. There are wild Moose I recently learned down toward Red Mountain before you enter Silverton. Look to the east of the road along the water

We drove through here as part of our drive from Utah to Oklahoma. We had never been here before...and it was truly awesome and beautiful. The views started to amaze as we approached Ouray and continued to amaze all the way through Durango. The road is very windy in parts and usually does not have guardrails. However, it was not particularly scary and the views of the mountain, the valleys, the towns, and the old mining operations were awesome. It would have been dangerous if I tried to take in all the views while driving, so I pulled over frequently to get out of the car, enjoy the views and breath the fresh air. We also took lots of time to enjoy the towns of Ouray and Silverton. They were both quaint and have lots of history. Very nice indeed! I highly recommend this drive if you have the time to really enjoy it. I would note that we made the drive when the weather pleasant and when the skies were blue. There was snow on the mountains but no ice on the roads...if the roads were icy it would have been scary.

Be sure to pull of road at viewpoints and "take it all in"! We stayed overnight in Durango, then started towards Ouray for our adventure. Stop in Silverton to hike up a short trail to see the Miner's Shrine. A 9 foot marble statue of Christ is there. Walk the historic main street. We found sales on Teva sandals and sweatshirts.

We drove from Ouray to Silverton in a 32 foot RV towing our Jeep. We had a scary experience when an oncoming 18 wheeler turned so sharply on a hairpin curve that the back of his trailer came over into our lane. Luckily we were at a place where my husband could hit the brakes and pull over to avoid a collision. It is a gorgeous drive however, if accidents happen they could be life or death. We later drove our Jeep across the highway going to Ouray and back with no problem. If we return to Silverton we will drive our RV there through Durango and only cross over the beautiful Million Dollar Highway in our smaller vehicle.

Let someone else drive so you can see the terrain! Some real nail-biters and fun to experience. I was amazed at the number of tractor-trailer rigs that actually took this route. Watch your speed when you come back down...its really easy to tax your brakes, otherwise. Very cool pull-outs with historical mining info. Those guys had to be TOUGH!

I usually travel on two wheels but ended up traveling the Million Dollar Highway via 4 wheels this time. It was Labor Day weekend and the traffic was heavy. The sights were excellent. Take the time to stop and take some pictures. We enjoyed one side trip to relax by a high mountain lake. Traffic moves quick and the road isn’t for the faint of heart. No highway rails makes you concentrate on driving rather than letting yourself get distracted. I will ride this road next summer. Safe travels.

Do I need a time stamp ticket to drive the million dollar highway?
Like you need to enter Glacier national park.

Planning to take my family visiting Colorado across the Million Dollar Highway. Is it still as scenic with snow capped mountains in July? Is it worth it this time of the year?
Written 2 July 2021
Yes. Snow caps make good photos. Road would be clear, but busy tourist season.

Planning a motorcycle trip the first week in June of 2021 and I'm wondering if this road is mostly clear of snow then?

weather is unpredictable, but i'd guess you would be ok. it's a heck of a bike ride. watch for rocks on the road.

I'm planning to spend my birthday this November in Colorado. We will be arriving Denver airport 11/18 at 9:40pm and will be there until Nov. 24 at 5:30pm. Places we are interested in are Estes Park/ RMNP (not sure about this one because of fire), Durango (for Winter Train), Ouray/ Telluride (Ski) and Glenwood Springs (for Yampah Spa). Is this too much to do from 11/18-11/24? This is our first time visiting Colorado and I am not a seasoned winter condition driver. I do have reservations for an all wheel SUV.
1. Should I go straight to Estes Park the night we arrive (Nov. 18)? Is the road safe to drive?
2. I would like to do the train in Durango, but is hesitant because of having to go through the Million Dollar Hwy. How is weather up there during late Nov? I was also wondering if Durango to Ouray via car vs. Durango Train has the same views or different experience?
3. If I had to cancel any of my destinations d/t weather or time restrictions, which one should I cancel? (Estes/ RMNP, Durango, Ouray, Telluride) Any recommendations on closer alternatives?
4. I wanted to keep Glenwood springs because It's the only Spa I can find that's interesting and provide scrub/ massages. Any recommendations?
So far our itinerary is Denver> Estes/ RMNP> Durango> Ouray/ Telluride> Glenwood Spring> Denver. I think I may have a case of FOMO! LOL!!! But I'm open to any suggestions and safety advice y'all might have. Thanks in advance!!

Hello! It definitely depends on the weather! I was just out there end of August and went to Pagosa Springs, Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Glenwood Springs back to Denver. Beautiful drive. My son lives there and did most of the driving in his 4 wheel drive. Glad we drove from Durango to Ouray though, instead of the other way. Some parts of Million Dollar can be scary looking over the edge! I heard the train ride is very scenic. We camped outside Silverton at South Mineral. Awesome place, even if you just drive back there. Plenty of hiking there also. Ouray is a beautiful location too.
If you have time when you go back to Denver, there are things to do in Boulder. Nice trail that goes along Boulder Creek and the scenic Flatirons.
RMNP will be a great trip for you in the future, it takes days to explore. I've been there in Spring, Summer and Fall. September is my favorite time there.
Enjoy your trip! No matter where you go in Colorado, it will be great.

Hi. My wife and I are leaving for this trip next Tuesday, the 15th. It shows perfect weather. However, I know it fluctuates quite a bit. Can you give me a range of temps? Like from leaving Durango in the morning, to higher elevations? Thanks in advance.

Rent a all wheel drive would not be surprised to have icing conditions over night at this time of the year
If you keep to the speed limit you should be ok and the awd
We did this trip in july
Durango is low altitude but from just below silverton to ouray its a constant climb
Stop for lunch in silverton
Great place on the left side of main street w bison and venison burgers
Forgot the name but it has lots of taxidermy inside

What is the closest spot to get on the Million Dollar Highway from Boulder CO?
Written 28 June 2020
I have a 34 foot Class A RV. Is this stretch of Highway too much to drive? I will be towing a car but I have many years experience driving.
Written 10 March 2020
I would not take the RV on this route, especially towing a vehicle.. Take your towed vehicle for this breathtaking ride.

I'm heading out for a motorcycle trip and was planning on taking the Million Dollar Highway north from Durango. What's with the Chip and Seal work going on?
Written 23 June 2019
Yeah that chip n seal thing sucks. The roa!!! is scary but exciting to drive the way it is. They just started it while I was there. Just prepare to stop. I was stopped twice for like 15 minutes. If you ride it before they start early at sun up or later in the evening when they stop, you should be able to ride strait through. But use extreme caution. A must do road tho.
