Do not miss this! The views are amazing! There are places without guardrails. If you’re afraid of heights, I’d say driving from Silverton to Ouray is better for the passenger. It was not as scary as I anticipated, and totally worth it! The driver really has to keep their eyes on the road, so they will miss some of the sights. 25 miles goes by really fast!

Mission accomplished: drove the million$$ highway and in December! (And I'm from South Texas) First- the views, the scenery, the drive is indescribable. Beautiful & awe inspiring to say the least. The highway is well maintained. The best part is the final stretch from Silverton to Ouray (and first part returning from Ouray). Slow & steady wins. My wife who is afraid of heights had her side window open throughout the ride. Respect the road, observe speed limits & don't be intimidated by the highway nor those speedsters that have driven this beautiful road a few times. No 4x4, offroad required for normal conditions. Again, the highway is well maintained & most folks are respectful, driving to enjoy this gorgeous part of Colorado.

In April, we got on this road by accident because GPS gave us two options and we chose the shortest one. When we started up, it had been raining and then began snowing and the snow got heavier the higher we got. We never went over 20 mph going up and sometimes it was about 10mph around the corners. We were scared we would slip off the edge! Windows started fogging up, the temperature dropped to 28 degrees as we ascended. Husband was driving, he did a great job, however I was a basket case. Could hardly look anywhere but straight ahead or down into the car. We are two 70-somethings from Florida and have never driven in ice and snow. Made it to Silverton and stopped at a gas station. Owner said people stop there all the time, white knuckled and shaking from the trip. I have since seen beautiful pictures of the road we traveled and it is indeed beautiful, and the snow was enjoyed more on the way down to Durango as we were then on the inside, next to the mountain and you could enjoy the ride a little more. Would I do it again, no. We even talked to some people that were in Durango to ride the train that lived in Grand Junction and they said that they go around, not over the mountain.

The day we drove the Million Dollar Hwy, we had everything from dry weather to rain, sleet and snow. It was still absolutely beautiful and we enjoyed all the pull-outs and the (sometimes limited (due to fog or snow)) views. Please be careful and obey the speed limit; on this road it is there for a reason. The road is open for all cars and we saw 18-Wheelers, campers, motorhomes and all kinds of cars and motorcycles, so don't worry about what kind of vehicle you are driving.

The climb and switchbacks and views are all very impressive, not for the faint of heart but totally worth the drive, relax and enjoy! Lots of ups and downs and twists and turns and changes in elevations. Nothing at Baker's Bridge that we saw of too much interest.

We travel a lot, and always travel designated scenic routes if possible. This is one at he top of our list. There are many pullouts where you can pull over and let the locals pass by if you are taking your time, so don't get in a hurry. The views are beautiful everywhere, and there is quite a bit of wildlife if that is what you like. If you are in the area, do not miss this.

Beyond breathtaking. Definitely a must do! We traveled in the morning from Ouray to Durango. The highlight (most scenic) part of the trip was definitely between Ouray and Silverton. The highway is located on the side of a cliff within a narrow chasm/canyon that is surrounded by vertical peaks of 13,000 ft elevation. IMO, driving southbound is less nerve wracking then driving northbound. Just south of Ouray is Bear Creek Falls. There’s a turnout on the east side of the highway from which to check it out. Well paved, well maintained, mostly no barriers between the road and the cliff. Definitely watch the speed limit signs. I don’t believe the speed limit went over 40 MPH between Ouray and Silverton…… with many sections at 25 or 30 MPH. There are periodic turnouts for sightseeing. There are also plenty of passing lanes…. To pass those who are going atypically slow. Tip….. make sure you fill up your gas tanks. There were not many gas stations between Durango and Ouray.

We flew into the Montrose Airport for our stay in Durango. The views on this road are unbelievable! The driving is very scary. As most reviewers state, lots of switchbacks and steep drop offs. I went slow and if there were vehicles behind me, I usually found a safe spot to pull off and let them pass. On the way back to the airport after our vacation, we unfortunately had rain and fog. Then this road was terrifying. We had 2 vehicles in our family travelling this road. I did ok. But the 2nd person was petrified. She is a city girl, so this road really freaked her out. If we ever go to Durango again, I would probably find an alternate route or alternate airport. If I was staying in Ouray and didn't have to travel the whole road, I probably would do this again and stop at the wonderful areas.

The views were amazing and the drive (Ouray to Durango) was not nearly as bad as I expected based on online comments. We were on the land side most of the drive, but even in the reverse direction, there are guardrails on the worst of the curves. Probably not for people troubled by heights but absolutely not the worst drive we did here in Colorado
