We drove up Silverton for the day from Durango. The drive is gorgeous. Lots of beautiful mountain scenery. We had lunch and explored the town. Our grandson enjoys museums so we decided to give the Silverton museum a try. We are so glad we did....More

The amount of things in this museum was just mind numbing. The nice man who took my ticket had warned me how much stuff there was but really, you can't grasp it until you're there. The other amazing thing, I went through on a Tuesday...More

From its three-story recreation of a gold mine to scale models and full-size wagons and coaches, the SJ County Historical Society skillfully interprets mining and life in this frontier town in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. Plan on at least two hours to...More

We took the Durango & Silverton train to Silverton and stayed overnight. We decided to give this museum a try and were really glad we did. The museum was much larger than we had expected. You'd turn a corner and expect to be done, but...More

We were in Silverton for a few hours and spent one of them at this great local museum. I would definitely recommend a visit if you enjoy local history and would like to know more about mining in the area.

Going in to this museum, we didn't realize how big it was going to be. Lots of very interesting exhibits. We didn't realize how many rock and gems that can come out of the mountains. Very well done!

Sometimes local museums dealing with history of that area are sketchy and limited on artifacts but not San Juan's. From beginning of tour to the end it is chock-full of documented history from photos and articles to actual items from their era. It's starts with...More

You have everything in here: Former jailhouse, mining history, agriculture, history of the people ... It was very interesting and you can easily spend two hours.

I am writing to you from the San Juan County Historical Society and we are flattered by your comments regarding our Museum, HOWEVER, Silverton IS accessible YEAR-ROUND. We are at 9,318' ft, BUT HWY 550 is a major highway in the state and is open year-round unless we have a heavy snowfall. Typically, the HWY is only shut down while they blast for avalanche control, perhaps a few hours at a time.

Oh, I just figured out the snow part. We couldn't get up to Highland Mary Lakes one year HIKING because of too much snow in the high country. So sorry for the mix-up.
