Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Our first Bolivia Laguna, what a wonderful sight. The colour can vary dependant on the dominant mineral at that time, arsenic, magnesium, carbonate and calcium go into the water from its subsoil , a wonderful contrast to the surrounding mountains. Then immediately on to Laguna Blanca, which sometimes when drier has a small land gap between Laguna Verde and Laguna Blanca and at wetter times they actually join.

A visit to Laguna Verde is normally part of a tour from Uyuni.
The lake is not always green, that depends on the wind. So take your time and don't let the driver push you to go on until you want to.

I visited Laguna Verde as a short day trip from the Chilean desert. The border crossing was smooth and the sites that welcomed me were breathtaking. Both the Laguna Blanca and the Laguna Verde were stunning. I did have to battle altitude sickness, since being at 4,600 meters in altitude really did a number on me! Luckily, I had taken most of my pictures and enjoyed the sites for a few minutes, before the alitude issues really started to kick in (dizzyness, instant headache, etc). I took some aspirin and felt better as soon as the bus crossed back into Chile.

You should be aware that you cannot see the Laguna verde in green colour if you dont arrive at the right time. All tour operators in San Pedro de Atacama are offering the same 3 day tour to Uyuni. On this tours you will visit the Laguna verde in the morning, when its not green coloured.

Laguna Verde is located within the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve in the remote southwestern corner of Bolivia right across the border with Chile. It is accessed most commonly on day trips from Chile and as part of the Salar de Uyuni 3-day circuit tours out of Uyuni, Bolivia. The reserve itself is quite spectacular, but this is a thread only about the lake, so I'll keep it to that.
Laguna Verde is set at the foot of the 19,400-foot Licancabur volcano (which also has the world's highest lake at it's summit - you can climb it, but it's a full day task and it's freezing cold and sooo windy). It is green due to reactions of the copper minerals contained in its sediments. It is really bright blue-green, like the Caribbean or something. Kind of weird. It's location at the foot of the volcano adds to the effect. However, at the end of the day, it's just a very small, very blue-green lake. Interesting to see when you're visiting the reserve, but by itself not worthy of an expedition.
If you visit the lake, make sure to bring a windbreaker or parka - it is COLD and it is WINDY. A wool hat too! You'll need to acclimatize to the altitude here before visiting - spend several days at over 12,000 feet before you come or you risk altitude sickness which is bad news.

The lake is only green when the wind stirs up the water. It was not green when we saw it, so it just looked like a normal lake.

The day we visited the Laguna Verde, we spent the entire day in the national park and did A LOT of driving on very bumpy roads. We had just spent a half hour soaking in the hot springs when it was time to change and head off to the Laguna Verde. Yes, it's pretty but it wasn't worth driving the distance required to get there over very bumpy roads. We had originally planned on visiting the salt flats when our travel guide suggested we also spend time in the Bolivian highlands. We ended up spending just one day in the salt flats and three days in the highlands. If I had to do it all over again, I would have spent two days in the salt flats and only 2 days in the highlands. I think we saw every lagoon there was to see. Of course, they're all lovely. But, it becomes really repetitious after a while. The best and most important one was the Red Lagoon. That was spectacular. And, had it not been so incredibly windy on the day we were in the Laguna Verde, it might have been more pleasant. But, we literally got out of the car for 5 minutes just to take a picture. Therefore, was it worth driving an hour round trip out of our way to see it? Probably not. I would have preferred to do fewer things but spend more time in the really special places. I could have easily spent more time at the hot springs and at the Red Lagoon.

The tour guide informed us that the Green Lake has turned grey and is no longer the same green lake. As a result, we canceled our stop there.

The lagoon is not green, it's a bit muddy. A long dusty drive from the Bolivian side, definitely skipable.

The last thing we saw on our 3 day tour from Uyuni, Laguna Verde did not disappoint! The day we saw it, it was a perfect clear mirror of the mountains. Amazing!!!
