Description:

The Fairfield University Art museum, formerly the Bellarmine Museum of Art,...

The Fairfield University Art museum, formerly the Bellarmine Museum of Art, is committed to the study, preservation, interpretation and exhibition of those objects entrusted to its care, and in accordance with its mission to educate and inspire its many diverse audiences. The museum has welcomed nearly 20,000 visitors since opening in the fall of 2010, championing excellence and promoting education in the visual arts through the mindful stewardship of its permanent collection; the presentation of up to four temporary exhibitions per year surveying a wide swath of centuries and cultures; and the implementation of a robust program of educational initiatives. Paramount in this ambition is the museum’s capacity to mount exhibitions of the highest possible caliber, exposing its audiences to often unfamiliar artists, objects, ideas, and civilizations. We expressly undertake to make art accessible to underserved populations through outreach, free admission, and free public programming, as well as to partner with local cultural institutions to foster creative community-oriented engagements in the arts.

On the Fairfield University campus, the museum is housed on the lower level of a former mansion. The gallery is tiny, with perhaps a dozen paintings from the permanent collection on display in one room and another room having sculpture, ceramics, etc. The museum mounts small changing exhibitions of work by contemporary artists many from the area. There is no... More

We stopped in here when visiting Fairfield - it is very small, but has a nice permanent collection (much of which is on loan from the Met) and when we were there they had a photography exhibit by a somewhat local photographer

(It's worth a visit to see the building in itself, with distant views of Long Island Sound.) The permanent collection focuses on early Greek sculpture, many pieces are plaster casts of sculpture from the Acropolis and other sites in and around... More
