Great place to get away from it all.

Much less popular than sleeping giant so there is more solitude to be had. Many great vantage points both north and south, east and west. I prefer to go in at the north end and do... read more

Lake Wintergreen area in Hamden is fine place for a walk or kayaking on the small artificial lake. Secure during daylight hours because it is usually has a decent number of people about, not because any park ranger is present. The area most locals associate with West Rock is in New Haven where the entrance to a drive to the... More

About 15 minutes from I-95, there are two distinct areas to this park. First, is the scenic drive that takes you to the top of the mountain where you see nice views of New Haven. fall foliage is just hurting so what is a good time to go now. You could start at the bottom and hike your way up... More

I like to walk around Lake Wintergreen as much as possible(but probably not nearly enough). The walk around is fairly easy(except for one rocky part-wear sneakers!) and will probably take you less than an hour. The views are breathtaking, and even more spectacular in the fall. I like to go here when I need to think. It reminds me to... More

Spectacular views from the top. I've driven to the top many times and have hiked up too. Very well worth the trip up to the top.

Much less popular than sleeping giant so there is more solitude to be had. Many great vantage points both north and south, east and west. I prefer to go in at the north end and do some exploring. Realtively easy hiking, riding, or trail running. The old road on top harkens back to an earlier time when people would take... More

Hike around lake Wintergreen for a level easy walk. or go up to 3 Judges Cave and out to the parking area for some great views. Most of the hiking is very easy. There is a road that is no longer open to traffic (although work vehicles sometimes do drive up) Most of it is very pleasant.

This is a cool place. In addition to it being the second largest concentration of rare and endangered species of any park in the state, Peregrine Falcons are making a comeback since this seems to be a favorite roosting/breeding location, and it is an interesting historical site. During the revolutionary war, "In the 17th century, West Rock served as the... More

My family including two teenagers went for a very nice walk today around West Rock Ridge State Park. We took about 2 hours to make a loop of about half the park around the green, light blue, and red trails that included a stop at Judges Rock. There were gorgeous views and it was very peaceful. Judges Rock was pretty... More
