This eternal resting place is tucked in the historic/cultural section of the downtown area, near museums and arts attractions. Most interesting is the variety of headstone designs. We were able to locate the monument to the free and enslaved Africans, although I'm uncertain if their...More

If you like old graveyards, this is one of the oldest! Very interesting markers, especially note the multiple young men lost on the same day by drowning in the CT river.

The Ancient Burying Ground is Hartford’s oldest historic site. It is a wonderful place to have a walk around. The art on the head stones was developed by folk artists. There are maps located at both entrances that describe all the different styles and the...More

It was a treat to walk around this cemetery and see so many different stones. It's also interesting to see these stones with the carvings and symbolism of a certain time period. Everything seemed to be in pretty good condition (with, of course, the usual...More

We just had a few hours to explore downtown Hartford. So glad we found the Ancient Burying Ground. So much history there, so many unknown stories. Highly recommend it.

We stopped here on our way to Acadia National Park. The gates were locked when we arrived even though it was during the "open" hours. There was a large family group there as well and a number on the sign to call if you needed...More

There was a woman working in the graveyard when we visited and she showed us around. There was a brochure which had some information about tours but I don't have it. Sorry.
