This is a perfect spot in Bhutan if you are a nature lover. This valley is situated around couple of hours drive from Paro and gives you a mesmerizing and scenic view. you can also find Indian military here guarding the border of Bhutan in association with Royal Bhutan Army.

Haa is one of the smallest districts in the country. This tiny region is one of the most beautiful and isolated areas in the kingdom. It is adorned with pristine alpine forests and tranquil mountain peaks.
This valley remains one of the least visited areas in the country and retains the air of an unspoiled, primeval forest. The wooded hills of Haa provide an ideal location for hiking and mountain biking. Biking around the valley to get to the local temples is an enjoyable way to spend the day.
Haa is home to a number of nomadic herders. It hosts an annual Haa Summer Festival that showcases their unique lifestyle and culture. The festival is an ideal occasion to immerse in the traditions and unchanged lifestyles of nomadic Bhutanese herders. It is certainly one of the best places to visit in Bhutan.

Haa Valley has been just recently opened to foreigners. It was off limits because of its proximity to the Indo-Chinese border where the tensions are high. As a matter of fact India maintains a military base in Haa and has built a road to Haa Valley from Paro district. Speaking of the devil, the road is one of the worst in Bhutan, even by Bhutanese standards . It's bumpy all the way. Combined with countless hairpin curves it makes it quite an adventure. So if you're susceptible to seasickness this ride is not for you. The views are incredible though.

when we came it was rainy and foggy . very very cold. tea vendors serve hot momos and maggi, pakoras , coffee etc which is just awesome in the cold. do try koka maggi here. Dogs are very friendly . View is just awesome as you drive really high to come here. Enjoy the bliss of nature. dont buy souviners here as they are over priced.

Last year me and my spouse went to Haa valley to have a farm house experience in Bhutan. I came to know of this village home stay from trip advisor. We stayed in a small village where a brother and sister run their own home stay facilities. We stayed with the sister named Chimi for 2 nights. It was really a wonderful experience and next time we are planning to stay in her brother Uguyen's house because his place is almost hundred years old. The hospitality of Chimi and her family was just great. The breath taking views of the Haa valley is something a nature lover will always cherish.

On the month of the February I went to Haa,it was my third visit to Bhutan but never been to Haa before. We just planed along the way and divert our car to Haa, the driving was bit tough and narrow bend and windy but we thoroughly enjoyed it. Well, reaching on the top of the Chelela Pass (One of the country highest motor able pass) was amazingly beautiful with loads and loads of colorful prayer flags, Chelela is on the 3988meters high, good we had our windcheater in our car. Awesome view of snow caped peak of Bhutan and some part of Sikkim, Kanchenjunga (3rd highest peak on earth). Haa is the small hidden village, quite quaint place, restaurant serving local foods, there is health post and Petrol pump as well. We drive little further to Hatey Village and stay there, beautiful people and peaceful ambience. Day tour inside the village was interesting with history of the famous sites Black and White Temples. Hiking on the near by hills was amazing, lots of trekking routes start from the Haa, as an trekking expert I can say Haa is the Paradise for Nature lovers and trekkers. Approx 70 km from Paro to Hatey village in Haa.

This is another beautiful valley in Bhutan, but I don't think it's a must - see.
There must - see cities in Bhutan are: Paro, Thimphu, and Punhaka.
Making extra effort to Haa is not actually worth it, not much to see there. Same goes for Gangtey.Gangtey is worth going only when black-neck crane season is around.
Otherwise, just visit Paro, Thimphu and Punhaka.
Don't waste your time.

Haa Valley is well worth a visit if you have time when in Bhutan. Most people miss the valley as their tour takes them to Thimphu and Punakha but ask your tour organiser if you can fit in a visit. It is recommended you visit the valley at the end of your trip to Bhutan due to the high altitude road which takes you over a 3988 metre pass just 2 hours from Paro. From Paro you drive up a fairly well made sealed road to Chelela Pass - Bhutan's highest motorable road - and on a clear day the 360 degree views are splendid - back down to the Paro Valley, down to Haa Valley, across to the mountains on the border of Tibet and looking north to the high Himalaya peaks. Haa Valley is fascinating - small settlements along the Haa River which gives you a really good idea of local life in Bhutan. Most people are farmers and there is also a large trout farm there. The Risum Resort hotel we stayed is very homely with 10 local ladies running it very efficiently. We were lucky to visit Haa on the weekend of the annual festival with activities including darts, dancing, local stalls, stone and knife throwing and traditional sports. There are two local monasteries worth a visit - the 'black' monastery and the much larger 'white' monastery. Having already visited central and eastern Bhutan, it was very interesting to see how different Haa looked compared with other areas. The geology is fascinating with lots of black rock peaks surrounding the valley. Well worth including Haa Valley on your trip program.

This, my third visit, has brought me at the end of the rainy season to this Shangri-La. Unspoiled, so green. Every turn seems to bring you another spectacular vista. The town of Haa has a basic hotel (periodic water, for example). I've been to Bumthang, Punakha, and the usual suspects--this is the place I'd recommend.

There is nothing in particular to see in Haa Valley... But the valley itself is quite astonishing. You can spend few hours in the valley or stay for a day to sink in the beauty n peace.

do we get option of public transport or sharing taxi?
is renting bike safe in paro?
Written 2 March 2020
I’m not sure about public transport to Haa Valley from Paro but yes, you can get shared taxi through a local tour operator. You may get mini bus (tampo traveller) on seat basis also through tour operator.
It’s nice to visit Haa Valley via Chelela pass which is highest motorable pass in Bhutan (3990 mtr) but unlike Rohtang Pass of India, you may not find snow here.
Please be advised that there is not much to see in Haa Valley - it’s just the drive if you enjoy scenic beauty.

Me and my wife are planning to visit Haa on bike. Is there a direct route from Haa to Phuenstoling without going to Paro?
I am not able to find it on google maps.
Thanks,
Viraj

Haa valley is at very high altitude hence roads of mountain require a good local driver. Chelela Pass route

Thank for the review! Can you, please, mention the hotel you liked in Haa Valley?

Risum Resort is good one. If you are travelling on budget, you can stay in Homestays - Ugyen Homestay and hospitality is good in case you want to experience local Bhutanese culture, cuisine and people.

Hi!
We will be in Haa Valley tomorrow (driving from Paro).
1) How long was drive? Did you visit any sites en route?
2) Was it super cold?
3) Is food available there?
4) On our itinerary for Haa Valley are:
- Kila Gompa;
- Lhakhang Karpo Nagpo; and
- Juneydrak Hermitage.
3) What do you suggest? I am not a trekker, but would love to see the valley and maybe do some short, relatively easy hikes, 1-2 hours, 3, through beautiful areas. My guide is not very keen on Haa. But it sounds so beautiful!
Thank you so very much!
Helen

Hi, I used to worked in Haa for developing community-based tourism there.
1) You would be better to estimate 2.5 hours from Paro via Chele La. Don't go through via Chuzom. It takes longer (about 3 to 3.5 hours).
2) As you visit on late May, it is no more cold (probably, around 20 degree in day time and 10 degree in night time).
3) Where do you stay firstly? Normally, tourists have food in their hotel. There are also a few tourist restaurants around Katsho town (downtown in Haa).
4) If you love hiking, leave Paro early morning and stop at Chele La for the panoramic view of Haa Valley and do hiking at the top. If you are lucky you may see alpine flowers there. Take warm clothes in Chele La as the elevation is around 3,900m.

It depends on your interests. If you would like to see more authentic Bhutan, Haa would be a relevant destination as there are many old traditional buildings.

Hi Pallavi,
I just saw ur reveiw here, actually I am planing a roadtrip to bhutan this november along with my wife and want to visit Haa Valley . I want to stay there for a night. What about the road condition from Paro to Haa and how will be Ugyen's place. Please suggest. I am Hemang from Guwahati, Assam.
Written 27 October 2017
Hello,
The road is very good and you will not have any problem of travelling through the scenic beauty which are treat to your eye. Haa has very limited staying option. I suggest you may like to stay in Haatey (about 15km from Haa town) In my review I have posted some pictures and in one of them you have a number which is supposed to be the best place to stay in the area. There are quite a few staying options (homestays only). In Haa town there is one hotel which is okay. The only resort which will be before Haa town is secluded and costly. Have a good trip.
