- Lee LValhalla, New York2,221 contributionsMaritime MuseumI came to visit on a beautiful Fall Tuesday. Not too crowded though there was one group of school children. This is a seaside village museum. Lots of buildings to walk thru. Most of the buildings were open and what was there varied. Some had examples of various sea going activity, figureheads, models, equipment and small boats. Others depict something that was used at the time, temperance lecture, store, lighthouse. A lot of them have people showing how things were done. Print shop, barometer/watch shop, restaurant cooperage and wood shop were all open with people showing what was done. They only had 1 boat the Charles Morgan the only 18th century whaling ship left that you could walk on and check out. There were others at Anchorage that you could view from the dock. They also had several other shops that they were working on in the shipyard. They also had some art exhibits depicting maritime themes. Great visit. Thanks for visiting! - RandyRossRidgetown, Canada12,749 contributionsA Definite Must Visit in MysticThis is a big museum, a very big museum! It covers 19 acres and there is a lot in each one. It takes a whole day or perhaps even more to see it. Wow! In fact, the museum is the largest maritime museum in the United States. There is so much to see here. For example, the Charles W. Morgan is the world's oldest surviving (non-wrecked) merchant vessel, the only surviving wooden whaling ship from the 19th century American merchant fleet (of an estimated 2,700 built), and second to the USS Constitution, the oldest seaworthy vessel in the world. The Morgan was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. It was wonderful to be able to tour her! The reconstruction of the L. A. Dunton was fascinating! I loved how we were able to tour this ship, even as it was undergoing major renovations. It was truly fascinating! This place is highly recommended.Thank you for your visit and kind words. We are glad that you enjoyed your visit and had the chance to tour the Charles W.Morgan and see the restoration process of the L.A. Dunton. They continue to do a great job maintaining the exhibits and improving the experience. An outstanding seaport village experience that brings you back in time. Also extremely educational. Unfortunately being off season not all of the property is open, but understandable as it was pretty quiet. In the warmer months it is usually hopping. A must see if in the area.Thank you for your review and visit! - laurmann2000Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida113 contributionsLots to see and exploreWhat a great place to explore. The Mystic Seaport Museum is a large indoor/outdoor space that you can spend hours exploring. There are building to go into that have some art exhibits and others that show lives from the past. There is a whaling ship built in the 1800’s that you can go into and explore which was really, really cool. The weekend we were there they had visiting raindeer, ice sculptures and a s’mores making area. Great place for old and young alike.Thank you for your review and visit! We're happy to hear you enjoyed our Winterfest celebration! If you have the chance, we highly recommend coming back during our summer hours to experience all that the museum has to offer of its nineteen acres and various events and activities.Written 25 March 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 February 2024
- theok4404066 contributionsSeasonally restricted but still funOnly half of the museum was open because of the season, but that half was really cool.Boarding and exploring the whaling ship Morgan was informative & entertaining. The majority of the museum village (church, general store, druggist, schoolhouse, etc) were open & staffed with guides. Planetarium show also worth the watch.Thank you for your review and visit! We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your time at the museum, and hope you have the opportunity to return when the summer months are upon us. Excellent signs, displays, docents, and variety of experiences. Something for all ages, along with a large gift shop and places to eat. The most exciting parts include visiting the Morgan tall ship, a large model of Newport - a miniature display in a building, and a ship getting repaired,Thank you for your visit and review. - Celeste D174 contributionsWhat a great experienceI was very pleased with this museum. It was nice to be able to walk outside and see the boats and shops, go through the shipyard and learn about the process of ship restoration. The village experience is a great feature as you can walk from shop to shop, learning about goods and services, as well as about jobs working the ship industry. I also enjoyed walking through the art galleries.Thank you very much for your review. We are happy to hear you enjoyed your stroll in the village. - magill1986East Greenwich, Rhode Island184 contributionsa day well spentWith lunch here, spent the entire day. Did the boatyard tour when we entered and then walked the entire site, reading the placards, didn't dally and didn't race through. Didn't have kids to visit the children's exhibits and didn't really engage with most of the staff manning the print shop or the cooper's, for example. Not a lot of interpretive staff but decent signage. Viewed the several exhibits (one was closed while they were switching to a new exhibit) at the end of the day, and am glad we did them last (they are at/around the north entrance). I think you would have to motor to get through the site in 2 or even 3 hours. So I am glad we didn't have anything else planned as I wouldn't have felt I got the full value of the entrance fee if we had had to rush through. A variety of buildings and their history were interesting in themselves; a scale model of the shipyards and buildings in the 1800s supported with photos and text; a real variety of various aspects of not only shipbuilding but of living off/from the sea. Several buildings were closed but there were so many, we didn't feel like we missed much. And any staff and volunteers we engaged with were unfailingly pleasant. Appreciated the free parking.Thank you very much for your review and visit. We are so glad you got to spend the day with us. The only thing that saved this visit was we only paid half price. The very nice staff person had us wait 5 minutes so we only paid 1/2 price. Most exhibits are closed, the ships you can walk on, you can’t explore, you literally walk on and walk off. The place was almost empty which was nice, they did ask us to wear a mask even though we were not near anyone else. The one staff member we saw in the town was very nice, and I don’t think he would have cared about the mask but there was another family behind us. The town is not in operation, we did get to see an old fire truck it was thing that was open. We were over it in an hour. I would wait until more of the town is open, not worth even the discounted admission price, but for 1/2 price it was something to do for an hour that was outside.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your experience at Mystic Seaport Museum. As you mentioned in your review we did cut our admission prices in half and since June 13th we have introduced a 25 minute waterfront cruise as well as free rowboat or sailboat rentals as part of the general admission price. Like all businesses in CT, Mystic Seaport Museum is adjusting to the mandates and guidelines of the State to re-open and re-activate areas of our campus in a safe fashion. We are also being careful that our value proposition is in alignment with our ticket price. With that said, we stand by our commitment to our guests with a "satisfaction guaranteed" promise with each ticket purchased. We hope you would consider visiting us again and if you would like to discuss your visit in more detail, please feel free to reach out to me at 860 572.0711 ext 4038.

Very little to do half closed do not bother. Yes I know there is a pandemic but this was horrible. First as we arrived there was a huge sign stating in essence that it would be better to buy tickets on line. So we sat outside and purchased tickets on the phone to avoid the line. BUT you had to wait in the same line with everyone else to get the ticket scanned so what was the purpose of pre buying?
Next there was one person in the info hut telling you what you could do when you were there. I asked if there was a tour but she laughed and said "no but you an come back here and ask me about the houses" Seriously? Not one other soul who worked there was in evidence . How hard would it be to have a couple of interpreters or even docents standing in the various areas wearing masks to answer questions regarding the few open houses and exhibits that were there. They kept telling us to go to the Thompson Exhibition Center to get cool and see the exhibit Ways with Wood or something like that. We get there it is a huge hall and there is a man in a small row boat repairing it. OMG I have watched paint dry with more interest but it was cool. There was a gentleman who was carving and he was informative and interesting. This was the highlight of the day. We got into the museum at about 11. I tried to make the best of it we walked around and looked at some of the shops and houses. Then my husband looked at me and said do you realize it's only 11:40. We were done. I tried and tried to make it last longer but, gosh it was bad. Do not waste your money. It cost us 45.oo at the reduced rate to basically bore ourselves to death.
This could have been so much better if there were a few staff members in or near the exhibits to at least peak interest or ask questions.
I thought at least I will go to the gift shop. I had been there before and it was a nice experience with soft classical music playing in the background. OMG they must have found a mix tape for the 70s because that was on and it was awful. Also the merchandise was tacky. Since when does a purple stuffed narwhal represent a whaling museum. Do not waste your money.

Dear GaryW18,
We were disappointed in receiving the poor review you posted on this site. This pandemic has been a challenge as we balance safety with the value proposition of general admission tickets. Since May we have been working very hard to deliver on both of these elements and have been opening more and more spaces and adding more activities as we head into our summer season. Your criticism on having more interpreters is certainly valid and we are adding more staff to some of our key areas in the maritime village to make it a more interactive experience for our guests.
However, the title of your post: “Do not Bother nothing open.” is not only unfair, it Is untrue. There are plenty of things to do at Mystic Seaport Museum and I hope you would reconsider your review. Although I may not change your mind with this response, I would be happy to discuss with you, your experience at the museum and make things right. You can reach me at 860 572-0711.
Respectfully,
Gabriel Gresko

We went to the Christmas Lantern Light Tour. For $33 per ticket, it did not live up to our expectations. You have to get there as soon as it opens for a chance to get tickets for the Horse Carriage which we did not know. We got 2 tickets for 6:40pm. We had dinner reservations, so we would just make by doing that time. We then went at 6:40 and they said they were only taking tickets for 6:20. I have no idea how that makes sense. I told a clerk to give them to someone else because we have plans and the response was " oh, I guess they are running behind. " Almost everything was closed. People were supposed to be singing continuously and stopped after 5:30 while we were there. The synchronized music to lighted Christmas trees were nice. There really wasn't much to do and an hour or so is all you will need. I wish there was more going on and it was organized better. $66 for two people and not being able to do what we want was disheartening.

Dear Landocolt45,
Thankyou for your feedback regarding your experience at Mystic Seaport during the Lantern Light Village event. To say the least this has been a challenging season at Mystic Seaport. With pandemic numbers on the rise, we had to adapt and re-imagine our normal holiday offerings into something that was more open so that guests can spread out in the open spaces and enjoy the grounds safely. Since your visit in early December we did make some significant changes to the program such as adding a hand-out that explains all that there is to do while on the grounds. We have also shortened the time of the horse and carriage ride during peak times to accommodate more people as many considered that the highlight of their night. We also opened access to the Charles W. Morgan so guests can explore the worlds last wooden whale ship. This this event (as well as the whole year for that matter) has been an exercise in adaptation as we navigate a new reality. With that being said we at Mystic Seaport would like make things right by you and ensure you get value from your ticket. We would like to make you whole. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience to discuss how we can make that happen.
With kind regards,
Gabriel Gresko

Reduce entrance fee by 90 percent
As a result of CVID 19 and the associated loss of revenue the museum has seen fit to PERMANENTLY lay off almost all the full time staff to include craftsman and maintenance crew. The lonely professional wood carver was tucked away in a "family quiet room" with not a single person in the building..
The only crafsman on duty was at the print shop and his talk was excellent. As the museum is charging full admission fee for a downsized if not empty facility I would recommend skipping this facility completely until such time that it is staffed appropriately. Using docens is not what makes this an educational experience although they do an excellent job of directing one to the nearest restroom.

We learned all about whaling, and shipbuilding at Mystic over the years. We actually got to board the Morgan which is an awesome feeling to walk around the only remaining wood whaling ship; enjoyed touring the craftsman shops and especially the working boatyard and talking to the employees. Be sure to go through the exhibit building before boarding the Morgan you'll get so much more out of being on the ship. We also got to see the Mayflower II before she sails back to Plymouth in May (she was being refurbished). The grounds are extensive and its so beautiful right on the water. There's a restaurant on the grounds too. General admission included the fantastic Turner art exhibit, such a deal! We spent 1.5 hr at Turner and 3.5 hr for the rest.

Although many buildings were closed we still. had an opportunity to walk about several ships and view the buildings that were open. Many of the buildings were imported for elsewhere but there all provided an excellent portrayal of the times.
Thus is a well worth while destination.
Purchasing tickets was slow but the attendant was friendly.
We were able to take a 25 minute boat ride, for free, but it only lasted 20 minutes. Even though we arrived when the Museum opened our boat ride tickets were not until 1 PM. The website indicated that if you bought tickets on line you would get a gift on arrival. When I called to inquire if everything was the same if we bought tickets unperson the answer was yes. However no gift.

Spent 2 hours could have left in one hour but we waited 20 min for boat ride tickets and the ride itself took 15 minutes. Most of the buildings were closed. There were no demonstrations or Mystic Seaport Employees accept the ticket and boat ride guy. The boat ride would have been the highlight, except we could not hear a word the tour guide said due to the loud boat engine. Definitly not worth the $25 each paid for the tickets

Dear Bobcat,
Thank you for your candid feedback. Since the museum has re-opened in May we have tried to navigate how to operate safely while offering a valuable experience for our guests. Because of state guidelines our focus has been to take advantage of our outdoor spaces and add value to our tickets by including a 25 minute boat cruise, free boat rentals (rowboat, pedal, and sail) and games on the green. We have also added free planetarium shows and a free gift at the gate (hardbound book) to add to ticket value. Right now we are assessing our value proposition and ticket prices daily. Most of the feedback we have been getting is positive but we do understand that people are disappointed when they cannot access some of the spaces on campus. With that said I would like to thank you for your feedback as we will continue to add to our value proposition as the museum opens more of its spaces.

Tickets are overpriced for the amount of activities you can do at Mystic Seaport in the cold weather. There was only ONE boat you can go on (and it's not because of COVID), and there was not much to do or see even inside the Museum for the ticket price. The Museum enclosed everything, so you are forced to buy the ticket. It is not worth the money in the winter. When everything is open (for the season), that may be different.

Dear Quickfeet LM,
Thank you for your feedback regarding your experience at Mystic Seaport Museum. We are sorry to hear that you feel the tickets you purchased were overpriced. During the winter months it is true that we do close the areas of the Preservation Shipyard as well as the Maritime Village but it is important to note we also offset those closures by significantly reducing our ticket prices. For a $19 adult ticket, guests can visit numerous exhibits including the world's last wooden whaling ship the Charles W. Morgan. If you have an AARP or AAA card your ticket price is reduced to $16. Guests can also visit warm indoor exhibits like Voyaging in the Wake of the Whalers, the Figurehead exhibit, the woodworking "Away with Wood" exhibit, the Sailor Made marine folk art exhibit, Mary Mattingly's Open Oceans Art installation and also attend numerous planetarium show for no additional charges during this time. We also offer half price tickets at 3pm. Ticket value is something we pay close attention to and want all of our guests to not only enjoy their visit, but be excited about visiting us again and perhaps purchase a membership so that they can enjoy all of the seasons and annual special events with us. Just so you know, the amount you spent towards your admission can be applied towards a membership if you would ever consider visiting us again when the museum is fully activated during the summer months. Thank you again for your feedback.

A friend of mine recommended a beautiful place in Connecticut back in 2008 and I told other who visited and raved about Mystic. I got there eventually in 2019. The Museum is a full days outing. They had a Turner water colour exhibition from the Tate Gallery in London so that was a extra surprise. The museum is an amazing place to get a real life view of a old fishing port and it’s inhabitants and how and where they lived

This was very cute . It does not feel cramped and very well spaced out. Boats rental and excursion are included with admission but there were a long line for boat rental and even longer for the excursion . I was also told that excursion was tight together but everyone wore masks. The working shipyard is amazing and just going and exploring multiple ships and stores... So worth the visit

Mystic Seaport has many areas that may interest a 2 year old visitor. Not only can a two year old visit the tallships, play in the children's museum, play in the maritime-themed playscape or watch a show on our performance stage. They can also explore the village and enjoy an ice cream by the river. Ans perhaps the best thing for parents- children 2 and under get in for free!

We are traveling with our elderly dog that cannot walk too much. He will be in a pet carriage. Is the seaport pet friendly?
