Description:

Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America....

Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America. The Gallery’s encyclopedic holdings of 200,000 objects range from ancient times to the present day and represent civilizations from around the globe. FREE and open to the public. On December 12, 2012, the Yale University Art Gallery celebrated the grand opening of the renovated and expanded museum. The expanded Gallery transforms the visitor experience of both the museum and its esteemed collections. The project united the 1953 modernist structure designed by Louis Kahn, the 1928 Old Yale Art Gallery, and the 1866 Street Hall into one continuous structure while maintaining the distinctive architectural identity of each.

The newly renovated Yale Art Gallery is a real gem of a gallery-- beautiful, expanded spaces that are newly renovated and a wide array of art and objects to see, from Picassos to old masters to colonial furniture. Something for everyone. And you can enjoy New Haven and its many eateries and buildings on the visit.

Our favorites were the Donatello work, the Rembrandt portrait, Andy Warhol's electric chair, the Salvador Dali, and Reuben's crucifixtion. There are so many important artists represented here--it is difficult to budget one's time. We are already planning... More

The works on display by Titus Kaphar on the third floor mustn't be missed. Rothko, Hopper, Van Gogh, a wonderful African art collection -- a bracing collection!

Renovated a few years ago, the Yale Art Gallery is a wonderfully accessible gallery with a fine collection. Special exhibits are always a treat, and the standing collection is superb. Free admission makes it easy to stop by at lunch or for the day. Good restaurants nearby and the British Art Center across the street make New Haven a natural... More
