The tour guides are volunteers and know everything about the cemetary, which is one of the first interracial plots in the U.S. So many stories, that we could not hear all of them in the hour-long tour, but you can also walk around anytime without the tour guide and do your own research.

Some graves -- of those of small children or those that have been washed away by age -- are very stirring and emotional for me. Others are incredibly massive memorials, statues really, and they obviously convey a story of wealth and good fortune for those interred there. A fascinating look at the history of one of the United States' formative... More

I am ashamed to admit that I have lived in the area my entire life, and had never taken a tour of this cemetery until last week! I knew there were many many renowned people buried there, to it was nice to have the tour guide take you around and point them out, while also giving a history of this... More

I did not know before going on the tour that Grove Street Cemetery influenced the design of Pere Lachaise. That bit of information placed the significance of the cemetery in a whole new context. You learn a lot about the history of New Haven from its founding to the present. GSC is also a lovely, peaceful space to walk around... More

Our group visited the Cemetery and walked the grounds where we were able to see where many great figures in American History are buried including Noah Webster and Eli Whitney. On the 4th of July a stirring parade led by a horse named Huckleberry , the Blue Coats and the Red Coats , led a large group of local residents... More

My ancestor's stone was brought here from the New Haven Green and placed along the north wall. Such a thrill. I also loved seeing the graves of Roger Sherman, Eli Whitney, Charles Goodyear, and Lyman Beecher (I'm a retired history teacher). The grounds are beautiful and you can spend a lot of time viewing the various styles of headstones. This... More

Large, beautiful cemetery with lots of trees and centuries' worth of grave sites. Because it's been in use for so long, there's a great variety of tombstones.

If you like to visit older really well kept cemeteries, this is one not to miss. You will even see some famous people buried there, like Eli Whitney, Noah Webster, and Roger Sherman. That isn't the only reason to go though, the stones are really beautiful and well kept and it is a pleasure walking through history. There are even... More

We occasionally wander around here or bring out-of-town visitors. It offers a glimpse into New Haven's past. You can't beat the front gate.

This cemetery is very large so be prepared to spend a few hours. It was lovely, the carvings on the headstones and memorials are just incredible. Beautiful final tribute to your loved ones. So many famous people interred here. Papers on the gate house give locations and names. Can get this off website too. The buildings surrounding this cemetery are... More
