Across the road from Lake Alice, thousands of bats stream it off three bat houses, every evening. It is a truly impressive sight (and smell). Get there a bit early to park, and then wait at the fence--they come out a few at a time,...More

Go before sunrise and the bats come streaming out. If you get there earlier, you can walk around Lake Alice right across the street (watch out for gators). Not a bad idea to bring a hat or a rain poncho since the bats have been...More

We decided to stop and stretch out legs and check the huge bat houses out on our way back home from Orlando. The bat houses are unique and are interesting. We parked at a parking lot below the bat houses. We walked to the bat...More

Wow, very interesting. Definitely worth visiting and also walking the trail across the street at Lake Alice and the Baughman Center. It wonderful you can visit so much in one area.

This in one of the more odd attractions in Gainesville but is worth seeing. The bat houses are located across from Lake Alice and at dusk every day, the bats come flying out to feed on mosquitoes and other flying insects near the lake. One...More

We took our 9 & 13 year old grandchildren to witness the emerging of the bats. What an AWESOME sight. About 10 to 15 minutes after sunset the bats swarm out of their bat houses. The sky is black as they fly out. Across the...More

Pretty fun to see all the bats fly out of their bat houses. By prepared to come a little early if parking, ~30 min, and wait for them to come out.

Fascinating to see. Show up about 20 minutes before dusk to get yourself a spot to observe from. There will be numerous others, equally interested. It was interesting to watch as the bats started to come out slowly, here and there. Then literally 1000's emerge...More

It is definitely worth seeing the tens of thousands of bats emerging from the bat houses at dusk. It is truly a remarkable spectacle. The bats stream out of the houses and disperse throughout Gainesville. There are always a lot of folks there to watch...More

We found the bat houses very easy to find and parking close by, arriving way to early the bat emerge just after sunset but the weather and temperature can effect if they emerge (they don’t like strong wind or temperatures below 65F) to pass the...More

Hi Tom, While there could be many possible explanations, it’s likely it was a maternity colony that left after the pups were ready to fly. It will be interesting to see if others move in before next spring or if they come... More

The bat houses are outside on the UF campus, and pets on leashes are permitted. The viewing area is right on Museum Road, so having pets on a leash is definitely a good idea.
