The home of Capt. John H. Geiger, harbor pilot and master wrecker, was built between 1846 and 1849. Slated for destruction in 1958, it was saved by the Mitchell Wolfson Family Foundation, a nonprofit educational institution. This large scale restoration was the first of its kind in Key West, thus sparking the restoration movement in Key West.Antique enthusiasts will appreciate the unique quality of the furnishings displayed in the Audubon House Museum. All furnishings reflect the elegance and comfortable living enjoyed for a wealthy family in Key West during the mid-1800’s. 31 of the original hand colored Antique engravings of the 22 birds J.J. Audubon painted in the Florida Keys during his 6 week visit in 1832 can be seen throughout the House. In addition to informative reading panels, an introduction to the property and its history will be given by your guide, and then you will roam the house and gardens at your leisure. Varieties of orchids and bromeliads emerge from the foliage and trees to surprise you with their vibrant blooms. Native plants and exotics provide an environment that is reminiscent of old Key West. Trees and plants are labeled with their common names, Latin names, and country of origin. This is the finest tropical garden in the Florida Keys. You may even catch a glimpse of some of our local birds! The garden tour also includes a self-guided visit to the Cook House. Houses of the period in the Florida Keys did not have inside kitchens as they were sources of heat and of course, fire hazards. A visit to the Audubon Gallery of Fine Arts will take you through the wonderful world of original Audubon Antique hand painted lithographs. The original Antique prints of some of J.J. Audubon’s contemporaries are also available for sale. The Museum Shop offers a wide selection of unique one-of-a-kind gifts, home décor, Antiques and educational materials. Our lush tropical gardens can be the site of your event:, whether you are planning a wedding or a corporate event. Let us make your event happen.

We went to the Audubon House while in Key West. I found it very disappointing. It was $14 to get in (same as Hemingway House which was excellent); and there is no guide. There is one person that give you an overview of the home. Also, Audubon did not live in the house. The person that purchased and restored it... More

This is a treasure for Key West. The Gift Shop is full of very unusual, artistic items that feature many types of birds.

Audubon didn't actually live in this house, but they have tons of his artwork in the house and shop. It was a really interesting look in to early life in Key West. The house is 3 floors, so be prepared to climb a few stairs in order to enjoy the whole house.

I enjoy history and probably more so historical houses, so it drew my attention when walking by. I guess most of the novelty seems to be attributed to whether or not Audubon actually stayed/painted at this property during his research on American birds. Whether true or not, if you are in the area and in desperate need, as was I,... More

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review of the house and grounds! Actually Audubon didn't stay in the property that stands here now, however there is a connection that we use to commemorate his visit to the Keys. We are so glad you enjoyed our little oasis here, it really is a nice respite in the midst... More

Audubon never lived here but there is an extensive collection of his prints. You are feel to wonder around the house and grounds at your own pace which is a pleasant change.

Beautiful Key West style home. Huge selection of Audubon's original prints of the Florida birds and those that are found in the Keys. Self guided tour with an explanation from a docent before we started. Lots of good a/c as well. Loved this home.

If you love old houses or tropical gardens, this is the perfect place to visit. Plants are carefully labeled. After a brief introduction you can explore the house on your own & even sit on one of the upper porches. Some huge koi in a little pool too. Nice Audubon prints. House is beautifully restored & maintained. A little oasis... More

You certainly get a taste of old Key West by visiting this house. Be sure to view the video on the third floor to gain further information about the Captain who built the house. The Audubon prints are beautiful.

We appreciate you taking the time to leave an excellent review. And yes, part of the bonus of house tours in Key West is that the majority of them represent different eras in our history. We are happy to see you watched the video too, for the added insight. We hope you had a wonderful stay in Key West! More
