The home of Capt. John H. Geiger, harbor pilot and master wrecker, was built between 1846 and 1849. Slated for destruction in 1958, it was saved by the Mitchell Wolfson Family Foundation, a nonprofit educational institution. This large scale restoration was the first of its kind in Key West, thus sparking the restoration movement in Key West.Antique enthusiasts will appreciate the unique quality of the furnishings displayed in the Audubon House Museum. All furnishings reflect the elegance and comfortable living enjoyed for a wealthy family in Key West during the mid-1800’s. 31 of the original hand colored Antique engravings of the 22 birds J.J. Audubon painted in the Florida Keys during his 6 week visit in 1832 can be seen throughout the House. In addition to informative reading panels, an introduction to the property and its history will be given by your guide, and then you will roam the house and gardens at your leisure. Varieties of orchids and bromeliads emerge from the foliage and trees to surprise you with their vibrant blooms. Native plants and exotics provide an environment that is reminiscent of old Key West. Trees and plants are labeled with their common names, Latin names, and country of origin. This is the finest tropical garden in the Florida Keys. You may even catch a glimpse of some of our local birds! The garden tour also includes a self-guided visit to the Cook House. Houses of the period in the Florida Keys did not have inside kitchens as they were sources of heat and of course, fire hazards. A visit to the Audubon Gallery of Fine Arts will take you through the wonderful world of original Audubon Antique hand painted lithographs. The original Antique prints of some of J.J. Audubon’s contemporaries are also available for sale. The Museum Shop offers a wide selection of unique one-of-a-kind gifts, home décor, Antiques and educational materials. Our lush tropical gardens can be the site of your event:, whether you are planning a wedding or a corporate event. Let us make your event happen.

This house is an excellent example of early Key West architecture with a central hall for ventilation hot weather with rooms flanking the hall. The guide gave information about the occupants of the house and the beautiful garden that surrounds it. The upper floor contains many Audubon bird prints. Be advised, Audubon never lived in the house although he visited... More

Audubon never lived here. However it is likely that he visited places like this Audubon House. Hence the house gives the visitor a historic picture of Key West in the early 19th century

Friends had their "destination wedding" in Key House, at the Audubon House. The grounds are lovely, the catering was superb, and there is a ghost! He likes the porch, and meandering through the gardens.

Thank you so much for your excellent review! Our gardens are such a perfect setting for weddings and receptions, we are glad you had a lovely time! And yes, "a" ghost is an understatement. We've been told by paranormal groups that we have a house full of spirits! Luckily for us, they are just mischievous and seem to enjoy the... More

The gardens are free and well worth the stroll off the beaten path. Beautiful historic home. We took our time and wandered around the outside of the house. All plants are marked with signs so you know what you're looking at. Got some great photos.

Thank you for leaving a wonderful review, however there may be a bit of confusion regarding the admission. Our gardens are viewable for an entrance fee of $7.50 per person, while the house and gardens are $12.00. We are happy you enjoyed your stroll around the property and hope you enjoyed your vacation! Spend an hour or so meandering through the tropical gardens and then hearing the introductory talk by the docent in the house. The history of the family is fascinating and he dispels myths that Audubon painted from the upper balcony. Audubon did paint the 20+ native birds of Key West and environs. The home is filled with original furniture and... More

I'm surprised that this doesn't feature more prominently in 'Things to Do' in Key West? Although I didn't visit either Hemingway's or Truman's house, I'm sure that the stories about Audubon and his amazing book of the birds of America plus Capt Geiger's story of wrecking must rival those of Hemingway and Truman in interest and historical importance. The house... More

Wow! Thank you so much! We have to say that Hemingway House and Truman's Little White House are also outstanding museums to visit, and since we all capture a different time period in Key West history, they all offer you a unique viewpoint. The Geiger family is certainly an important piece of the Key West culture and we love that... More

This review is for the art gallery located beside the Audubon House, which sells hand-colored prints. During a recent trip to Key West I spent several hours (two separate visits to the gallery) choosing three prints and then painstakingly going over mats and frames with the salesperson there. I was told they were having a sale on framing and it... More

Yes, you did visit and spend several hours going over antique prints and then framing. And that is where the truth ends. You absolutely received the art and framing that you chose. It is the framing that was listed by serial number on your purchase order, that was reviewed and signed by you, which also matched the serial number on... More

This was very interesting. Lots to see & a lot of info that I didn't know. It is air conditioned which was nice because it was very hot outside the say we visited! The gentleman that meets you at the front was very nice & informative! Well worth the money. You tour the house on your own.

Beautiful old house on Whitehead Street. Professional docent and workers who truly love their jobs and all aspects of J.J. Audubon's life. Period furniture and collectibles throughout the house as it would have been in the 1800's when the Giger family owned the house. Even though Audubon never visited this beautiful home, Key West was an inspiration for some of... More
