Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A lovely place to spend the afternoon! For $20.00 you get 2 chairs and an umbrella placed where you like and face the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. There are restrooms on the beach as well as a sand volleyball court. Take a walk on the pier and get some great photos of the beach and shoreline. One of the perks here is that “Salute” Restraunt is located right on the beach so you can have lunch on your bathing suit as long as you put on shirt and shoes. The view is wonderful, as you eat the ocean is right there.

Want Pickleball in the keys? Higgs is the place. 6 courts , daily play, IMHO, great play! If you feel intimidated by not being good enough, just come by in the aft and practice up, courts clear after 1 or so. Otherwise, just show up, 8-ish is fine. Many 4.0+ in the morning session. About 40 players, but rotations go quickly. 3 open courts to play with different peeps , 4 on-4 off and 3 challenge courts where winners stay to play the next two in cue. Coastal winds are prevalent which makes the game “interesting “

As a first time tourist visiting Key West for a daytrip, we actually struggled to find a beach in town we could lay out at and enjoy the day. We tried a couple places before landing on this one. The beach is public but beautiful and clean. The day in February we were there it was not crazily packed but people were there. We were able to lay out and enjoy the day. It's a fun beach to explore, both in the ocean and in the surrounding area. There's picnic tables, grassy areas, tennis courts, a pier, public restrooms and changing areas as well as a bar and restaurant. We really enjoyed our beach day here.

We spent about 1.5 hours at Higgs Beach one afternoon specifically to go snorkeling. We had our own snorkeling gear, so we headed right for the pier, walked down to the stairs, and got to it. We snorkeled along the old pier (which is just pilings now). The area closest to the new pier was pretty deep, which meant it was harder to see down to the fish. But, we did see some really big schools of larger fish. As we worked our way along the pilings, it became more shallow and we saw a lot of smaller fish in the grass and tons of conch. We had a good time and the water was a perfect temperature.
Side note: We were able to leave our belongings on the beach and nobody touched them or messed with them. :)

The facilities here are fine, with restrooms that include a changing stall and an outdoor shower area to rinse off. There is a playground area for the kids and free parking right along the beach area (drive west until you see the restrooms to park where you can enter the water). Make sure you have shoes you can wear into the water-the coral reef nearby means the sand, especially entering the water, is more like gravel and even once you pass the first few feet where most of the coral bits are, the ocean floor has ridges that someone with sensitive feet might find uncomfortable. The water temperature in February is cool, but not freezing. Overall, if you have beach shoes, you'll probably have a great time.

Higgs beach is on the southern coast of KW, some 15 min walk from the southernmost marker. It was a great place for us to relax and cool down in the sea after exploring that part of KW.
Adjacent to the beach are terrific (free to enter) botanical gardens at the Gardens club (see that review).

This beach was OK but we left after about an hour and went to Smathers Beach down the road which was much nicer and more spread out. Not much area for sunning and too crowded although there were many services available and things to see. There is a restaurant which is next door.

This is a beautiful un-crowded place to watch the sunrise in Key West. There are several bench along the pier - but bring something to sit on because they are usually wet from the dew in the morning. Also, several seagulls also came to watch the sunrise with us.

Shallow, rocky and cloudy and seaweed all over this time of year. Not the best beach to go to. One and done here.. p.s. some good snorkeling out along pillars and metal wall past seagrass.

This was a nice beach. Parking easy out front on the road and easy to walk into. A small amount if food available in a truck on the road. It says "no alcohol" but everyone had some. Just dont brink glass or show off with it. The sand a lot more fine than the beach at fort Zachary. We brought towles to lay on,m but I think there was umbrella and chair rentals down further. We may have gotten a ton of sand mite bites here,..cant be sure but most likely here...so read up about them first before you go to control that problem. The water was very nice, all was good. We went later in the day and there was a lot of space both on the road or on the beach.

At what time of the day should I get to Higgs Beach to be sure I can rent an umbrella and lounge chairs? We are coming in early January.

Does it cost to park here? Thanks.

What time or how early should we get to the beach to rent a lounger/umbrella? We plan on going in April.

How far of a walk is it to Higgs beach from the cruise ships?
Written 25 May 2017
Jut a tip the beach at Fort Zach State Park is closer..... and it is a lovely beach with picnic tables and some natural shade available under the giant pine trees.
Written 31 May 2017
Is the only way to get to the beach from the cruise ships the trolley or is there other local transportation?
Written 25 May 2017
If you are capable of riding a bike i would highly suggest it. Walking is really far and its hot but bike rentals are all over and its prob a 10 min bike ride to Higgs from where the cruise ships dock. A scooter rental is good to!

What is the best way to get to Higgs beach from a cruise ship? Especially if someone in our party isn't that physically fit? We need to get to a place where grandma can sit down (preferably with shade and beverage, and watch grandkid and mom swim :-)
Written 21 April 2017
A taxi would probably be best, they charge per person. You can rent 2 lounge chairs and an umbrella for $20. There is also an excellent restaurant here as well.
