This is a look to the past and the reverent way the lives of so many killed was commemorated. Needs a little restoration. Interesting that height is indicative of height of waves which washed out this place and so many lives.

While biking around Islamorada my wife and I stopped at this monument in memory of Islanders that have lost their lives from hurricanes. There are benches for meditation, a ceramic map depicting the Key West Islands and a small place where people have left momentos.

Everyone should stop at this well kept Florida monument to understand how horrific the 1935 hurricane was, and what a high price was paid in human terms to develop the Keys.

We saw this after visiting the museum just beside the Islander Resort. It was very moving and humbling to be able to visit this with deep appreciation for that terrible and sad time in Islamorada's history.

We had passed this several times but not until we visited Windley Key State Park did we realize what it was. Make a quick stop and read the placards available there to get a history lesson.

In 1935, a deadly category 5 hurricane hit the Florida Keys. Known as the Labor Day Hurricane, over 400 people dies, including many veterans who were housed at work camps in the Keys while building the Overseas Highway. The monument contains remains and cremains of many unidentified victims. The steps are very unique with large fossils embeded in them.

Hurricane Monument at Mile Marker 81.6 is the center of Morada Way this is where the historic 1935 monument stands. This place has always appealed to the artists and craftsmen.

It is a monument. How do you review such? It is however very near the edge of the road but maybe if you go at 4 am the waves can be heard over the traffic noise.

While the monument is nice, and honors something meaningful, it is not what I would consider an attraction. It is easily visible from the road, and that may be enough. Check it out on your way up or down the keys.
