Back before Huuricanes were given names, the 1935 hurricane that hit the Keys wrecked tremendous havoc, death, and devastation. This monument and memorial on Upper Matecumbe Key is a 5-10 minute stop that provides information about both the hurricane and its aftermath. The cremains of...More

This monument is easy to miss if you are not looking for it...in fact, even my GPS missed it! It is full of history regarding the Labor Day hurricane and the tragedy it caused. Worth a stop if you have time.

We were walking by & stopped to read the information on the monument. (Another there let us know there was more on the other side of the monument.) Doesn't take long to visit and the history lesson well worth it.

The monument is right nest to the road and it is nice to stop and pay your respects. If the traffic is light it is well worth it, but during peak hours getting back into traffic is frustrating.

Just decided to stop as were going by. Only takes a few minutes to gain some perspective and pay your respects to the victims of this 1935 disaster.

Not a big monument, but historically important to the Keys. Informative, you would be glad it see it and read the history. The Keys aren't just Sunshine and beer.

This is a look to the past and the reverent way the lives of so many killed was commemorated. Needs a little restoration. Interesting that height is indicative of height of waves which washed out this place and so many lives.

While biking around Islamorada my wife and I stopped at this monument in memory of Islanders that have lost their lives from hurricanes. There are benches for meditation, a ceramic map depicting the Key West Islands and a small place where people have left momentos.
