Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful building housing an average collection of art. Front desk staff was snooty, museum shop wasn’t open, expensive admission for the collection being showcased. Had to wade through a lot of unknown artists unless you have a PhD in art history. There were a few nice pieces, but a lot of not so great. Pretty average.

We enjoyed our visit one morning before lunch at the new pier nearby. I loved the Quilt exhibit and my husband liked the breadth of the collection and nice explanations of all the artwork. We got a $10 discount by buying the tickets from their website!

I was a member and took my granddaughter to their excellent free monthly art classes for children ages 2-5 that are held the first Wednesday of the month. After the classes we walked around the museum, discussed the pictures and then had lunch.
I also went by myself or with a friend from Tampa and enjoyed the permanent and temporary displays.
Rather than describe the variety of the art including all media and old masters to very contemporary art, I suggest you go to their Facebook page to see a small sample and then go to the museum and see so much more.
They have a nice cafe, but check the days and hours as the cafe is not open every day.
Thursdays admission for adults is only $12 after 5:00 pm, Children under 6 are free.
They are closed on Mondays.

Not only were the exhibits in the museum wonderful, but we lucked on to an a capella chorus presentation of Christmas music -- both classical and popular. Truly wonderful. As travelers who hadn't seen any announcements of the concert, we felt so fortunate to have picked that time to see the museum.

We were headed to the Dali (which we have visited before) on New Year's Eve, but the crowd waiting in line outside completely turned us off. As we were strolling in St. Pete, we came across what would turn out to be an unexpected cultural gem! The Jennifer Angus exhibited was fascinating and breathtaking! We were certainly surprised at the curation which included an original Motherwell, Monet, Tiffany, and similar. We would definitely go again for a special exhibit!

This museum has a broad collection of Art. The pieces are expertly curated and beautifully displayed. The building itself makes really good use of light. It’s neither a small museum or a large museum. Museum store is well stocked and tasteful. The museum guards use a light hand. The setting is gorgeous. It is convenient to both the waterfront and Beach Avenue. So a stop here can provide other things to do just outside the door.

This is a "encyclopedia" style museum. The permanent collection includes art from the inhabited five continents. And their docents are educated on the various holdings be it painting, photography, sculptor, decorative arts, jewelry etc. Changing exhibits are usually a must see. The current exhibit Art of the Stage presents costumes, ads, set pieces from regarded 20th and 21st c. artists including several women. Delight with the Ballets Russes in Paris and Robert Indian'a art of pop in American opera. A must see thru May 2020. The cafe always provides an exceptional meal or snack. The gift shop has many hard to find items for you or a friend.

We had a couple of hours to spare in St Pete and decided to go to the Museum of Fine Arts. We hold a reciprocal membership for the last 15 years allowing us admission to over 200 museums throughout North America. But here we were informed that the museum ceased to participate in the program. Which is ok, circumstances change, but the problem is that the museum is still listed as participating. So the management gets the on star, they should have provided the services to the members while the listing is being updated. As for the museum itself we saw it in 2003 and I wasn't overly impressed with its collection. As far as I remeber it is a 3-star museum.

The MFA in St Petersburg in a park setting has some great collections! The art is well organized and displayed. It’s a great way to spend a few hours and to learn. You will not be disappointed! And it’s a bonus that they have a cafe on site (limited menu and seating) and a great gift shop!

This relatively small museum has a great collection, and it has good rotating/touring exhibits. We are members and go each time a new exhibit opens. One wing is devoted to a touring art exhibition and the small upstairs gallery is devoted to showing photo and video items from the museum collection.
It seems to be a popular spot for special events, so the small parking lot next door frequently closes early.
The museum is surrounded by restaurants and is next to the Pier, so it is good a daylong visit.

addition to answer: Rooms can be viewed in minutes, But! I would not recommend this type of visit. Each room has its unique artifacts that you will miss if you do not take your time looking, reading, and understanding their worth.

About how long does it take to tour the whole museum?
Written 8 November 2018
This is a really nice small museum and a couple of hours is all you need. They had a special interactive photography exhibit while we were there in September which would have been fun for kids.

What is the senior citizen cost for museum including special exhibition?
Written 22 March 2018
Check their website, I am not sure of a senior discount. AARP members get in free on certain Sunday's but you still pay extra for special exhibits.
Written 23 March 2018
Do you have to pay the $25 dollar Museum entrance fee PLUS the $25 Star Wars/ Special Exhibit fee? (A total of that would $50 per person see the Stars Exhibit)
Written 18 March 2018
That would be correct. Yes, it is a "big ticket" item but if you are a Star Wars fan, the exhibit is nicely done.
Written 19 March 2018
How big is the kids area? Are there areas appropriate for preschool age?
Written 18 March 2018
Only with some Oreo in advance,
Written 18 March 2018
If you go on a Thursday night after 5pm do you still pay the full price for the SW Costume? And how long should I give for the Star Wars exhibit?
Written 23 February 2018
I am no longer sure about the admission on TH evening but I do think that is still on....usually you do pay extra for specific added special exhibits. I would just call the MFA and ask the question.
I'm a member and so slide in and out for music events and talks etdc so fees are something I don't know about but the main exhibit is pretty good.
