I was expecting a plateau with many windmills like I found in the guide pictures, but there were only ruins left. A taverna with a wonderful view and a fantastic orange cake is definitely worth a stop 😊 The owner laughed and said that we should have arrived 50 years ago, when windmills were used to get water. They have long since been surpassed by other technologies. It is said that the European Union donated money to restore them, but when strong winds broke again, no one repaired them. It's a shame, the place has its own atmosphere.

On our way to the Dikteon Cave, we stumbled across the ruins of the Lasithi Windmills. There’s a small area for parking, so we stopped and scrambled up the stony hill to investigate. One stone windmill still has sails attached and another has the inner wooden workings still intact. It’s an atmospheric place, especially when accompanied by the clanging bells of goats from across the road. These windmills were once scattered all over the Lasithi Plateau and used to pump water, but modern technology has now replaced them.

Windy windmills! It's definitely worth a visit! Beautiful surroundings! If you have head for heights, you will enjoy travelling up the winding road to this destination 😉

There are a few windmills in the area but the best ones are up on a ridge. The best viewing area is near the restaurant called Restaurant Tzanakis Michael and there are some spots to pull out here with a car. The restaurant was closed when we visited in March but the views we got up here were fantastic.
There are 24 windmills facing the sea and it is free to go to this area with your own vehicle. There isn't much of a walking path here but you can still get close and go around the windmills. Bring a good pair of shoes and be prepared for the exposure to the weather as it is very open. There is a sign explaining the history of windmills and how they work in Greek and English. There are also numerous windmills on the plateau so you will see different styles but we felt the stone ones on the ridge were the most interesting to see.
These windmills are located an hour outside of Heraklion and we made a day trip out here to visit the Cave of Zeus (Cave of Diktaion Andron). The drive is very winding and the roads are narrow at some points but we felt the views and scenery of the area were worth it. This was a highlight of our visit to Crete.

Sunday 23rd August and we drove to visit Psychro Cave (Diktaion Andron). The roadway was rather steep and had numerous twists and turns.
The windmills are situated on one of the bends as we approached the entrance to Lasithi Plateau. We were surprised to see them as they appeared almost from nowhere as we rounded a bend in the road
Originally there were 27 windmills, today only 24 remain in various degrees of disrepair to the structure and mechanical parts.
There is a taverna and souvenir shop near by.
We parked upon the roadside and had a walk around exploring. It was also an opportunity to look at the panoramic views.

Seeing these on our approach was quite a moving scene and gave an insight of how these windmills would have looked like when there thousands of them in operation.
The elements have destroyed most of the sails, but you can still see the remains of the hand built wooden structures and the stone frames. It must have taken a great deal of time to fabricate and build each one without the tools of today.
It was a marvellous experience to see them and great to see one almost still complete.
There is a limited amount of parking alongside the road but we recommend taking care as there are some deep potholes in parts.
Definitely worth a visit, especially for anyone interested in a long gone way of life.

Having seen a picture of loads of windmills, there use to be 100,000!Unfortunalty due to new types of irrigation there a couple of hundreds still working with their sales on.lots have fallen into disrepair. The plateau is over a 1,000 metres up above sea level and is wonderfully green and very much a lot of crops are grown here. Also you see herds of sheep and goats with bells on.There are lots of old villages and places to eat up here and lots of geological sites to see also.

Not really worth a visit for the windmills alone, but nice to see what they would have been like in the past. However you are more likely to be driving here to visit the area, in which case it's a nice stop for a photo. It's more about the scenery.

At the "entrance" of the Lasithi plateau we found these ruins of old windmills. We took a quick look but didn't stay long because of the wind.
