My trip to Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek was super wonderful. I'm planning a trip to Kanchenjunga word third highest planet and the second-highest mountain Himalayan country of Nepal side. Luckily, I visited this autumn and I thought, the weather and the mountain scenery are especially showing me. I really fell in love with the natural beauty of the Himalayas. once the time is not enough to explore pristine Mount Kanchenjunga.

Nov 2011 • Friends
Last year, nov 2011, my boy-friend and I went to Nepal for a three week trekking in Kanchenjunga-region.
The tour was organized by OSHO VISION, a trekking organization in Thamel, Kathmandu, Nepal (exact address see below) chosen by coincidence by my boy-friend the year before in nov 2010 as he had gone to Nepal for a three week trekking in Annapurna and Manaslu region.
He had been so satisfied, that for our tour in nov 2011 OSHO VISION from the very beginning organized our tour. During 2011 we stayed in contact per eMail and I only can say everything went PERFECT!
OSHO VISION took care for booking the domestic flights from Kathmandu to Biratnagr, the bus from there to Taplejung, where our trek began, and back, the permits, the hotels for the days before and after the trekking in Kathmandu, …
If you ever want to go for Nepal for trekking we only can only highly recommend OSH VISION as your trekking organization. Mr. Dinesh, founder and boss, especially Mr. Rajendra – Raj – Khanal, tour operating manager, and especially Mr. Krishna Khanal, trek and tour guide and the rest of them are a team of young Nepali men, very likable, nice, friendly, competent, honest and straightforward. They took good care of us, from picking us from the airport in Kathmandu, during our first days in Kathmandu and especially during the trek, until they brought as back to the airport in Kathmandu in the end again.
They fulfilled all our wishes: the narrow time-schedule – we only had time for 13 days of trekking for the tour which normally take around 20 days - , the fact that the two of us only wanted one porter beside the guide – normally you have to take at least one porter per each – , the fact that in the end in Kathmandu we wanted another hotel , because the first one form the first days we did not like very much and so on and so on ….
Special thanks to Mr. Krishna – Krish – Khanal, our guide, by the way the same guide my boy-friend had the year before, who truly got a friend. He was best beyond saying!! Best guide one can get for trekking in Nepal. English speaking, physically and mentally very strong, he has a very kind and friendly attitude and behavior towards us, towards local people, other tourists and other guides and he has very good knowledge about behavior in the mountains – we had not a single problem during the trek thanks to him.
Many, many thanks to OSHO VISION for a great time in Nepal. We’ll never forget you hospitality, your kindness and you support! uli gerauer & torsten neumayr, Germany

A tough but rewarding trek. We started at Taplejung and walked to North Base Camp before heading over Selela to Cheram and up to South Base Camp. The huge drop down into Cheram was hard on the knees but we were glad we were descending not ascending.

You walk from Taplejung towards North Base Camp along a deep valley through attractive forest, alongside a white water river. For five days you only see glimpses of snow covered peaks until you reach Gunsa.

Most tea houses are ultra-basic, - think Annapurna thirty years ago. However, a few are surprisingly good, particularly in Gybla and Ghunsa. Most tea houses do not have a menu and serve little more than tasteless dal bhat or pasta with veg. Beds at many tea houses are hard as rocks. Some high altitude tea houses cook and heat with dried yak dung which makes life very aromatic.

Availability of beds in tea houses can be limited, particularly at Kambuchen and Lonak. I recommend sending a fast porter ahead each day to book the rooms you need. At Kambuchen go to the 'White House' or the new Lodge which is currently under construction (as of Nov 2019).

Spend two nights at attractive Gunsa and climb the nearby hill (400 meters) on your rest day. Spend two nights at Kambuchen and take the side trip up to Jannu.

The one day return walks from Lonak up to North Base Camp and from Cheram to South Base Camp are long hard days but totally worth it. If I were to do the trek again I would stay a night at Ramche which is wonderfully scenic. This would give time to fully enjoy the very attractive route between Ramche and Oktang South Base Camp.

We flew in and out of Badrapur. We could have saved two long days of expensive and scary road travel by flying in and out of the new airport at Taplejung.

Mobile phone reception using Ncel sims was non-existent more than one day out of Taplejung. Nepal Telecom (Namaste) sims were much better but are harder to get (I was told they are available only to Nepalese nationals). Some Nepalese will let you use their phones - I paid Rs100 (about $US1) per minute for calls to Australia.

Kanchenjunga is a trek for people who enjoyed/suffered Annapurna and Everest in years past. The grotty tea houses will evoke nostalgia. The huge uphill and downhill tracts will push you to your physical limits.

I did not like this trek there was lots of landslides that had swiped away entire part of the trail and the forest in the surroundings. The mountain scenery wasn't so great except when sawing Mount Jannu. And also the cost of this trek is really expensive compare to other region like EBC, and Annapurna which is not entirely justified in my opinion. I also heard that there is a road now build from Taplejung to Tibetan border, and know several days of the trail are made on road.

I made this trek once in 2014 and it was very beautiful and rewarding. But I went back in 2022 and it has changed so much since the last time. The pollution on the lower tamor river is very present with a lot of trash along the trek like bottle of plastic etc. There is a huge hydropower plant since 2-3? years in construction and a lot of road building which has made the first days of the course awful. You can see bottle of plastic old tent until the south camp base it's really a shame!

I trekked the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area with Trek Nepal International in Nov/Dec 2013. Despite Kathmandu being 'shut down' for 2 days because of the election and the fact that Kanchenjunga is an incredibly remote and isolated area, we spent 3 amazing weeks in some of the most unspoilt land imaginable. This was all due to the incredible organisation and local knowledge of both the Thamel based office staff at Trek Nepal and their highly qualified and experienced guides (Laxman, Pramod and Ganesh). A big thank you must also go out to all of the incredible guys that worked as our porters carrying our gear, setting up campsites, cooking food, entertaining us with their fun loving sense of humour, and showing us more care and compassion beyond what you would normally expect. I would recommend Trek Nepal to all and any of my friends, family and anyone else considering travelling in Nepal

I spent just under a month trekking in eastern Nepal from mid-March through mid-April 2013 with Kamzang Tours who are affiliated with Project Himalaya. You can find them under either name on the web. We flew to Tumlingtar, began walking in Chainpur, and reached the Mt. Kanchenjunga Northern Base Camp (Pang Pema) and the high, ethnically Tibetan village of Olungchan Gola, and then back down, quitting walking at Taplejung. The trek takes you through a richly varied landscape, from steep, terraced agricultural areas to more typical high Himalayan mountain landscapes. It is interesting in that there are a wide variety of villages, landscapes and people you see. It was a tented trek with individual sleeping tents for our group of eight and a common tent for meals and socializing in the evenings for the eight of us. Kim Bannister and Lhakpa Dorji Sherpa, the trek leaders and their team, took excellent care of us. They were attentive, dealt with the inevitable minor problems well, and planned the trekking to challenge us but never so much that it felt impossible. Safety was always a high priority. Food was amazingly good. If you are interested in trekking in Nepal that is rigorous but not impossibly hard or dangerous, and you want to see a lot of different ecoregions, I highly recommend this trek. And, I unreservedly recommend Kim, Lhakpa and Kamzang Tours.

The trek is pretty tough but very rewarding.
We chose to trek from the south (Sukethar) to north (Taplethok) and were happy with the decision as we saw mountains every day on the approach.
The trek visits both south base camp - Oktang, and the north base camp - Pangpema, where the views of Kanchenjunga are splendid.

There are some lovely side trips including Yamatari Khola, from Ghunsa, Jannu viewpoint from Kanbachen, and Domo Ri from Pang Pema.
Thankfully there are still no crowds on this trek, so it was a very enjoyable experience .

In general the accommodation and food selection is limited and basic, with the most basic teahouse in Ramche, but the trek can be done as a teahouse trek, so we did not have to carry a tent. It is a must to have own sleeping bag, as most lodges do not provide any blankets.

With the road being slowly built, the approach can be shortened by starting from Hapu Khola and finishing in Taplethok, from where a local jeep transport goes to Taplejung.

A guide is mandatory, we were lucky with a great guide who was organized by an agency that pioneered this trek, Visit Himalaya Trek, and all went flawlessly due to their perfect organization skills.

Nov 2016 • Friends
Hello and Namaste !
This November I have guided my clients to Kanchenjunga Basecamp trek for more than 3 weeks. The trek is absolutely beautiful and also adventurous. The great views of Kanchenjunga, Jannuhimal(Kumbhakarna), Kabru mountains, Rathok and many peaks are breathtaking .
The diverse landscapes and massive forests give you an amazing experience in the high route Himalaya. The trail along the Tamor river and Gunsa river are magnificent. And the famous Pathivara Devi Temple lies in this trek.
In this region; traditionally made ancient houses, social structure and equal economic level helps to tie the society intact. Rai, Limbu, Gurung, Tamang and Brahmin culture are still intact and unique. Both Buddhists and Hindus are religiously united. People are friendly, and they grow rice, millet, potatoes and now the cardamoms plantation. Sheep, Goats, cows, Yaks, Buffalo and ox are the domestic cattle and produce the ghee, Chhurpee, Chees, wool and meats.
The trekking trail is damaged after the monsoon and now the villagers are somehow maintained. Many suspension and wood made bridge are gone. The track is changed. And some teashop and house are in danger from the flooding. Between Chhiruwa to Gunsa and up to Khanpachen village the trail is changed, landslide and bridges are gone. Due to Landslides, the way to Khabachen to Lhonak is dangerous. There you should be aware while walking. Often stones are falling. Some place I have seen people are working and rebuilding.
Up to 8-10 people you can sleep in homestay or in Lodge. But for Camping the trek is just perfect.
There I have seen some lack of work in Kanchenjunga conservation Area
1. I have seen the Kanchenjunga council and WWF who has been working for this reason, should give more action and priority to maintain the trekking paths where damaged.
2. South part of Kanchenjunga region there are no notice boards about the trail, village, campsites, walking hours and landslides area - Requested to manage the notices board.
3. Conservation offices in Gunsa and Amphudin are often closed. At Gunsa the permits are should bring the house where the man lived Or should left at hotel where you sleep. Please kindly request to your clerks what the office use for?
4. The prices for meals are depending on owners’ mouth. Somewhere prices are minimum and somewhere so expensive. There must be community and they can make the reasonable prices or develop the menu.
5. Foods are good but bedrooms, bed cover and kitchen gears are less clean.
6. There are no tourist management committee or even if not working. Better form committee.
7. The people from this reason must dedicate tourism business to ensure their economy supports.
8. Increase more homestay or Lodge and capacity of bedrooms and kitchen and dining rooms.
9. Established a lodge in Lasyabhanjyang somewhere, it is difficult place to find eating place, together beware of destroying the forests.
10. At Pangpema there is a teashop but it is not regular open.
Permits: Restricted Kanchenjunga permits you can obtained through the trekking agency and it costs per week $10.
TIMS: it is not mandatory
Trekking duration: 21-26 days for North and south Base camps.
Flights access: Kathmandu to Bhadrapur or Suketar/ KTM
Suketar flights are conditional and flights will be 2/3 times in a week.
Road access: Taplejung (Jeep/Bus are frequent available)
Well, these are my experience and I hope this information you .
Thank you.
