About
Built in 1371, Dundonald Castle is a splendid example of a medieval tower house, with a fine barrel-vaulted ceiling in the lower hall. Sitting on a prominent hilltop in Dundonald village, Dundonald Castle commands fine views over the Firth of Clyde. The castle was built on the site of earlier castles belonging to the High Stewards of Scotland and can be regarded as the cradle of the Stewart Dynasty. Explore the high-vaulted halls and gloomy dungeons of this splendid stronghold, perched on a hill above the village. The main tower was built in the 1370s by King Robert II to mark his succession to the throne. The Castle Visitor Centre includes an exhibition illustrating the history of the site and a display of some of the artefacts found during archaeological excavations on the hill. There is also a souvenir shop and a small coffee shop which also sells cakes, soup and sandwiches. The Castle and Visitor Centre are open all year round.

A bite sized gem in Ayrshire
Really great visit. Dundonald is not on the main tourist trail (yet!) but is definitely well worth a visit. The guided tour from a volunteer guide (Dave) on day one and (Barbara) when we went back again, were both excellent. The children on a group visit seemed well looked after by enthusiastic Blythe and to be learning lots while also having great fun. This place can only get busier so go as soon as you can!

This is a simple, yet very special castle!
This was a wonderful stop along our journey. The day we were there it was crazy windy and rainy, but it only added to the environment. Our docent was patient and kind and informative and we spent an entire hour alone with her exploring the castle and its history. I would recommend it to anyone.

Lovely setting and a great tour guide.
Very well organised and interesting visit. The tour guide was really knowledgeable and friendly. My sons are 13 and 15 and he kept them interested and made them laugh which os no mean feat! Would definitely recommend doing the guided tour to get the kost out of it.

Fun visit to our ancestral castle
This is a guided tour and the guide was very knowledgeable about the castle and the Stewart Family. There is a coffee shop in the parking lot. The castle is undergoing renovations so parts of it are not accessible. The only downside is the hike up the hill to the castle!

A fantastic guided experience and a glorious monument.
We had the pleasure of a guided tour from Blythe. She was very knowledgeable and brought the whole history of this remarkable castle to life. In addition to knowing her history, she was very personable and enjoyable to listen to. I would recommend anyone visit this wonderful monument and see the birthplace of the Stewarts in Scotland.

    Fantastic tour guide
We booked tickets for the castle tour and we loved it. The views are spectacular and the tour guide was full of knowledge and really friendly. We learnt a lot about the castle and its origins and it is very reasonably priced. Well worth a visit if you are up this way.

A must see. We should all know our history!
I can't believe I haven't been here before but I'll definitely be back! A lovely wee cafe for lunch then a tour of the castle. Our tourguide had a great knowledge of the history of both the castle & its occupants. On the downside some of the castle was cordoned off with scaffolding for preservation & maintenance works, so we'll definitely have to return to see what we've missed. A must see for Scottish history buffs!

    An interesting morning!
We visited Dundonald Castle this morning and were lucky to have a guided tour on our own. Our guide, Dave, was very knowledgeable and brought the history of the castle to life for us. As I am waiting for a knee operation, I found the walk up to the castle and the internal stairs quite difficult, but Dave was very patient and didn't rush me and so I was able to enjoy the visit. The ladies in the Visitor Centre were very friendly and there is a small museum, a tearoom and clean toilets. If you are in the area, make sure you visit.

Very steep path from the car park. Well laid out inside with plenty information boards.

More important historically than I thought. Worth the visit.

We really enjoyed our visit to the castle. We are Historic Scotland members, so we have visited a lot of properties, but we enjoyed our visit today, which was greatly enhanced by our tour guide Johns knowledge and enthusiasm and not just being given a set of headphones. Having the personal touch of a tour guide definitely enhances the visit.

Great cafe in the visitor centre next to the castle. Good food and friendly service. Lots of really nice items in the shop. Outside seating for the better weather. Dog Friendly. The castle itself is well worth a visit (fee payable) with lots to see and great views.

Visited here today and what an experience. Despite the website saying it is a ruined 14C castle it is much much more. The first two levels are fully covered with a vaulted ceiling and the third floor, although open to the skies still shows the pillars of its own vaulted ceiling which is so atmospheric. The views are incredible. Would recommend to all my friends although it is on the top of a very steep hill!. The tour guide (Dave) was very knowledgeable and informative and went out of his way to take us around rather than wait for an afternoon tour. Above and beyond Dave, thank you so much!

The views were breathtaking.
They even had dress up for the kids. They loved it. It was a small trek up from the coffee shop. The guide gave us a good idea of the history.

The castle was situated in a beautiful landscape towering over the local town. The tour guide was very knowledgeable & provided information in a delightful anecdotal style. The castle had a steep spiral staircase, from the lower Laigh Hall to the Great Upper Hall, which added a sense of adventure to the tour. Unobstructed views, from the Great Hall, allowed for wonderful photo opportunities. There was a small museum, below the castle in the visitor centre, which also housed a great coffee shop. Top Tip: Definitely try a large Cappuccino & Lemon Cannoli... Both delicious!!

Didn't know anything about this castle until I saw the brown sign for it on the A77, and took a punt. This is looked after by the Friends of Dundonald Castle, and they do a wonderful job. A tour guide comes with the entry fee, and my guide Dave was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic and enhanced my visit so much more than would have been the case if I was left to just wonder around myself (although there are interpretation boards throughout the site). There is also a small visitor centre with a cafe, a gift shop, and an excellent exhibition. Recommended!

We visited around lunchtime today. The castle and grounds looked great in the frost but definitely wasn't worth going in. We paid £18 expecting a guided tour but once we entered the castle we were informed there was no tour as the girl finished soon and didn't have time to do one. Would have been nice to know this before we paid. Cafe looked nice and had a good selection at reasonable prices.

Hi, thank you for your feedback. We are sorry your visit wasn't up to our usual high standard. Our tour times are set to allow our amazing volunteers to take breaks and sometimes swap with another volunteer but the castle is accessible all day with an entry ticket. The tour is complimentary and is not reflected in your admission price. You should have been informed about tour times before your purchase and we will be sure to feed this back to our team. We would be happy to discuss offering you 2 free entries to the castle to compensate for your experience. Please do get in touch with us if you would like to discuss your visit further at info@dundonaldcastle.org.uk or on 01563 851489.
