The ruins of a 14th century castle are one of the biggest attractions of the area. The castle, located on a hill, among limestone rocks, is part of the Trail of the Eagles' Nests. It belonged to a system of fortifications, built by King Kazimierz Wielki, to protect western Lesser Poland from Czechs, to whom Silesia belonged at that time. For some time, as a fee, it belonged to Prince Władysław Opolczyk. Taken away from him in 1396, the castle was then handed by King Władysław Jagiełło to a local nobleman, Jan Odrowąż of Szczekociny. The castle was invaded several times by Silesian princes in the 15th century, and with the advancement of warfare, its fortifications became obsolete. In 1655, it was captured by the Swedes, and since then, it became a ruin. In 1722, it was partly demolished, with bricks used to build a parish church at Olsztyn. Currently, only fragments of defensive walls remain. The most impressive still standing part of the castle is a 35-meter round tower, built in the 13th century, which served as a prison.

Zamek w Olstynie is a big and very beautiful castle located in the Eagle-Nest trail, between Czestochowa (he most important pilgrimage place in Poland) and Krakow (the historical capital of Poland). In fact, it is one of some castles located in this route, in the southwest of Poland. It is a very well-conserved and restaured castle in ruins, where you... More

On the way back to Krakow from Czestochowa to catch the coach for Zakopane my friends arranged some sightseeing on the way so we set off earlier. Jurassic Highland: The area which is most spectacular, is also known as the Jura Upland. First short stop, the small town of Olsztyn. Overcast with clouds the sky, we allowed ourselves only a... The ruins of a XIV century castle look amazing at sunset. Spent a night on a festival at this location and it was very picturesque. Superb for exploration during the day. Quite developed tourism industry in the area with loads of hidden history and culture. Must try local smoked goat cheese before climbing the ruins!

A ruin for sure.....but such a great location and the history of the place is interesting. I don't think one would travel out of the way just for this old site, but combining it with a visit to the Spichlerz restaurant nearby makes a very nice stop.

The ruins of the castle are indeed nice to look at, but my group decided to visit it at night - 10 pm in the summer - while holding torches lit up with fire. It probably wasn't the best choice. The way to the castle turns out to be quite difficult to reach, especially during the night. I don't know... More

If you are looking for a great day out walking and catching some historic sites then get yourself here. Very cheap to enter and a huge space to wander around. Love it every time I visit be it winter or summer.
