Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

unfortunately the castle is closed and cannot be visited, you can only imagine the beauty inside.. Yet, I recommend a stroll in the park outside as the founder ( the marquis Panciatichi Ximenes d'Aragona ) was also a keen botanist and planted sequoias ( redwood) and other American species that can still be found in the park. I cannot fathom the abandon of this masterpiece and hope that it could be restored someday.

By pure luck, beeing in Siena for Palio,we discovered that only for 2 days the Castle of Sammezzano is open to public,so we rushed there.
We parked our car at the hill's foot and after 30 minutes of climbing thru a beautiful park we were able to enter in this fairy tell castle.
It was an organised tour,30 people once,a very competent guide who presented(in Italian only) the story behind the owner and building of this piece of art.
Our eyes and our hearts was overwhelmed by the colours of all rooms and the beautiful story of this place.
The last room, the Peackok room was totally stunning ,there was nearly 2 hours of amazingly beauty.
On the way out,you can have a brochure and some post cards, and, also if you want, you can donate an amount for castle reconstruction.
If you're around, make yourself a treat and check out ,maybe you also could visit this treasure.

We enjoyed the entire day hiking up to this castle. The long hike up with two children (12 year old son and 8 year old daughter) in the summer was enjoyable but required frequent stops for water so take a back pack because there is nothing but nature and an unlived in castle. It is so worth it though. This is the perfect way to enjoy Tuscany. The hike will take you all the way to California with the Redwoods (all numbered). The Marquis knew what he was doing when he transformed this mountainside into a relaxing retreat. You will walk on old cobblestone roads on some parts and there are hidden rooms under the ground and what look like old dungeons along the way. There is even an old structure that was abandoned...one can't help but wonder what they were building and why they decided to stop building it because the structure is massive. The old castle stands atop the mountain and looks down over the city below. A truly magnificent view. This was one of the best experiences we had in Italy- dare I say even better than visiting the super crowded Leaning Tower of Pisa...

While I was going to south Italy, I stopped in Tuscany to visit Sammezzano castle, sits in Reggello, about 40 km. far from Florence. Unfortunatly, It was closed to public and even now it is, but the location deserve a visit all the same. The great park, the wonderful landscape of green hills around, and also the exterior part of the buiding...all is very interesting.
I read before that indoor there are 365 rooms decorated with amazing majolicas and plasters, as moorish style rather similar to famous Alhambra palace (Granada, Spain) but more big, rich, colored, various, if compared to spanish one. The location is very complex to explane completly, on youtube you can find more.

You need to know before you head off it's now completely closed to the public and gated off at all entrances. I cannot begin to express how awful this is, it contains one of the finest ceilings and interiors in the world. How the Italian government have allowed this to happen is beyond me. Imagine the Sistine chapel derelict and allowed to fall to the ground. One of the most beautiful buildings ever. See the save sammezzano website and if you know any rich investors tell them one of the world's greatest treasures is for sale!

We were very privileged to be able to visit this Castello recently after years of trying and we were not disappointed in anyway. We were well and truly blown away by the sheer beauty of the place. It was a long walk up in the heat of the day but that in itself was beautiful, along shaded pathways and through an amazing sequoia forest. The Castello blew our minds, it was an explosion of colour and beauty, the craftsmanship is extraordinary. A real treasure that needs to be preserved for Italy and not to be sold to foreign hands. We consider ourselves so very lucky to have been granted access.

We recently were able to tour Sammezzano with a group. It was beautiful with such a rich history. Hopefully they are able to save it so that people can continue to enjoy for years to come.

Interesting place to hike and explore, too bad you can't see any of the inside of the castle! The grounds are pretty interesting with several outbuildings and some cool rare euro sequoia trees.

Doing just another thing than visiting the mall I went into the forest with my dog. In the shadow under sequoia's we climbed the hill and met the giant palace. It was a refreshing walk in the heat of the day.

Extraordinary charm even if it can only be visited from the outside.
It can be reached on foot in 10 minutes.
Too bad it's closed.
