Neighbourhood: South Loop
This downtown neighborhood offers a variety of activities ranging from cultural to sporting. If you happen to visit during football season, you may bump into a boisterous few fans on their way to a Bears game on the southernmost tip of South Loop. On the flip side, Museum Campus offers cultural and educational experiences in its planetarium, museum and aquarium, all situated along the lakefront. Grant Park is one of Chicago’s premier locations for green space and recreation with views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. Take a stroll down memory lane in the historic Prairie District where you can enjoy views of old historic homes. Restaurants, theaters, and clubs are spread throughout the neighborhood along with a collection of burger joints along Michigan Avenue just across from the park.

This church is the definition of beautiful. So much history, beautiful Tiffany windows, gothic culture. This is true Chicago Gem , absolutely stunning! Located just south of Roosevelt and Michigan in South Loop.

This historic church on Chicago's near south side (an easy bus or cab ride from the loop or the North Michigan Avenue area) was rebuilt after a fire in 1900 left the James Renwick (the Smithsonian Castle, St. Patrick's cathedral in NYC) exterior intact but destroyed the neo-gothic interior. The wealthy congregation chose Howard Van Doren Shaw to redo the interior in an arts and crafts style filled with references to nature--pomegranates, grapevines, etc,--and more than 175 angels, including four life-size "heralding angels" high above the sanctuary. Pre-Raphaelite murals by Chicagoan Frederic Clay Bartlett complete the interior.

Spectacular stained glass windows include 9 by Tiffany studios, in a variety of styles and two spectacular eye-level narthax windows by Edward Burne-Jones of the William Miller & Co studios.

There are knowledgeable docents available during public hours and an excellent brochure for self-guided tours.

As a big Pre-Raphaelite fan, my initial interest was the Burne-Jones windows but was intrigued by the thought of the Tiffany windows. I couldn't make an organised tour of the church but got in touch through email and arranged to go one morning. It was an easy No 3 bus ride from the Mag Mile.

I was let in by the pastor and left to do a self-guided tour (they have a leaflet). My breath was taken away by the beauty of this church. The stained glass windows are just stunning. I took some time to contemplate the beauty of the place and left a donation.

If you like churches, art, stained glass, this is a must see.

Not far from the loop, this church is well worth adding to your tourist itinerary. The Arts & Crafts style interior would be worth seeing on its own, but the windows steal the show. The Tiffany windows span several decades so you can see the development of his work, with the piece on the far right nearest the alter featuring all of his patented techniques, including confetti glass. The non-Tiffany windows are also impressive, for example the the meticulously painted on draping on the blue dress pictured here. Don't miss the angel standing on a dragon to your left in the main vestibule as you exit to the street. She has some fun socks!

Individual tours. Our guide was so friendly and knowledgeable. Gothic outside, arts and craftsman inside. Tiffany stained glass. Lots of history. The docent was second to none. Don’t miss this.

"Unexpected beauty" - If you like visiting beautiful historic buildings don't miss this church on South Michigan Ave. They offer complimentary tours with very knowledgeable docents. It has historic landmark status and for a good reason - so much history including the 'who's who list of important Chicago members along with arts & crafts style interior - simply beautiful - not to mention all of the tiffany windows. I visited since they had one of the windows restored and it's amazing - please go if you haven't in a while. I would sum this church up as "unexpected" - the outside is gothic - you will not be expecting what's inside.

We love and appreciate antique buildings and especially churches. This church is steeped in history. It is full of the most beautiful Louis Comfort Tiffany windows. You can spend a lot of time watching the color-change from outside lighting. It is really awesome. Try to go with a tour guide.

The docent at the nearby Clarke House suggested we stop by. It was a Saturday and a docent was available for a private (free) tour. Beautiful stained glass windows by Tiffany and others. The architecture is also very interesting. Our docent was very knowledgeable. For the best views you need to climb stairs. The windows can be viewed from the first level.

Unfortunately the church is not self-sustaining and it is in need of repair and upkeep. The tour is free; please consider making a contribution to prevent additional deterioration.

This church is a gem!
