About
Welcome to the University of Chicago! Founded in 1890 through a gift from John D. Rockefeller, the University of Chicago is an intellectual destination and one of the world's premier academic institutions for inquiry, education, and discovery. UChicago draws inspired students and scholars to our Hyde Park and international campuses, placing us at the nexus of ideas that challenge and change the world. Beyond scholarly endeavors, visitors can tour architecture from neo-Gothic to contemporary, meander through lush botanic gardens, experience a broad array of visual performing arts, bike along the historic Midway Plaisance, and discover many other cultural treasures both on campus and off. Hyde Park Community The main University campus is situated just seven miles south of downtown Chicago in the vibrant Hyde Park neighborhood-a tight-knit, diverse community bursting with coffee shops, restaurants, and bookstores. The newly revitalized 53rd Street corridor has become an epicenter for dining, shopping, and entertainment. Hyde Park is also the heart of Museum Campus South, a consortium of museums and cultural institutions on Chicago's Culture Coast including the DuSable Museum of African American History, Museum of Science and Industry, Frank Lloyd Wright's Frederick C. Robie House, the Renaissance Society, and the UChicago's own Smart Museum of Art, Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, and the Oriental Institute Museum. UChicago's Global Impact The University is shaped and inspired by the city of Chicago. Through growing partnerships with neighbors, UChicago is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and economic development of the South Side-and to the global reach of its vibrant city. In all we do, we are driven to dig deeper, push further, and ask bigger questions-and to contribute and expand our knowledge to enrich human life.

If you want to get a feel for quintessential South Side Chicago, you have to make a stop in Hyde Park, one of the city’s most popular neighborhoods. This historic area is home to two of the city’s most prominent cultural institutions, the Museum of Science and Industry and the University of Chicago. A stroll here will bring you past vintage and grand hotels converted into luxury apartment buildings; peaceful gardens, parks and green spaces; and ivy-adorned museums and other cultural institutions that speak to the city’s diversity and architectural beauty.

A highly recognized university, this campus is worth a visit for the great Gothic architecture and jeweled leafy colors in fall. It's one of the best free things to do in Chicago. The campus is accessible via public transportation by taking the Green line to to the 55th St/Garfield stop. I recommend a walk through the neighborhood of Hyde Park too.

It feels a little strange reviewing a University like it was a hot dog stand, and you're not going to find many good hot dogs here. If you're looking for a peaceful visit, as a complement to other south side attractions (most notably the Museum of Science & Industry), this campus fills the bill. Gothic architecture mixed with modern, grassy quad, the Midway to walk along. And if you're in the neighborhood, you're very close to Court Theater and the Oriental Institute Museum (although it says it's about to change its name, so look for it).

Walking around University of Chicago and the Harper Memorial Library, you’re waiting for Milton Friedman to come outside to give an economics lecture. It was at the library where the ‘Free to Choose’ debates took place over 40 years ago that brought me here, but I can say that there is a lot more to offer with fine restaurants and coffee shops all over. And of course education if you’re into that sorta thing.

The only time we left downtown Chicago was to visit Oak Park and Frank Lloyd Wright and to visit southside attractions like the Museum of Science and the University of Chicago. The University of Chicago is one of the leading institutions in so many fields of research and for its stature, this is a fairly modern campus 20th Century, created from the generosity of John D Rockefeller. However, the campus is a wonderful collection of gothic buildings to give the illusion of a much old institution. As an economics major in the late 1980's, I knew Milton Friedman and U of C was the economics leader. I simply had to visit and it was a very pretty campus to walk. We really only hit the old academic quad between the medical school and the Rockefeller Chapel.

Entering the gates of the quads, it's clear that you are on university campus. The buildings are a mix of Neo-Gothic and more modernist. The area around the campus is dotted, as you'd expect, with eating places, bookstores and other places serving the students and faculty.

Dang what a beautiful Quad, which is pedestrian and so lovely to walk through in springtime! The neo-Gothic architecture is stunning. I also know several people who went her for undergrad and graduate school —both of which are superb. Challenging, scintillating, and superb. One of the great institutions of Higher Learning in the world.
Don’t miss the Midway from your car, and explore Robin House (Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece) and Rockefeller chapel.

I'm certainly biased here: this is my father's alma mater! Nevertheless, I give it my highest praise since it is one of the world's top universities, not to mention a very beautiful campus. When Rockefeller donated money to start the school, he claimed this was his greatest achievement; it's easy to see why.

This is one beautiful campus! I didn't go to school here or anything but I've visited a few times and it is seriously beautiful. They have a really lovely bookshop on campus with a wonderful selection of hard-to-find books. They have tons of trees to sit under and lovely buildings. Worth wandering around if you're in the area!!!

We were privy to an outstanding tour by University staff at the Law School - my father attended there and inquired about seeing around the campus after all these years - they went above and beyond, giving us not only an extensive tour, but asking my father questions about his time there, helping him look up former classmates, and offering to follow up with more information and sending us off with some lovely gifts. My father was touched. We then walked around the campus where the original law school was, and the rest of the beautiful grounds.

We looked at this school for enrollment, and was not impressed. The kids were girls prissy and mean, the teachers were nosy and unimpressive. Well not go there again.
