About
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) operates the nation's second largest public transportation system and covers the City of Chicago and 35 surrounding suburbs. On an average weekday, approximately 1.6 million rides are taken on the CTA. The CTA is an independent governmental agency created by state legislation. We began operating on October 1, 1947, after acquiring the properties of the Chicago Rapid Transit Company and the Chicago Surface Lines. On October 1, 1952, CTA became the sole operator of Chicago transit when it purchased the Chicago Motor Coach system. Our mission “We deliver quality, affordable transit services that link people, jobs and communities.”

The area
Neighbourhood: West Loop
Fulton Market, Randolph Market, Jackson Boulevard and Greek Town make up the West Loop. The neighborhood is best known as the location of Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Studios, but this downtown neighborhood is also an up-and-coming spot for Chicago’s trendsetters. Several sub-neighborhoods within West Loop make this a unique neighborhood to visit. Dotted with factories and warehouses, West Loop is packed with various types of dining and nightlife options. If your timing is right, you can take part in neighborhood events like the West Loop Farmers Market, Craft Beer Fest, or the Randolph Street Market Festival.

Great to avoid traffic to Midway Airport
Jul 2021 • Couples
As in most big cities, you need to exercise some caution in taking public transportation. But, my wife and I enjoyed using the train to get from our hotel to Midway airport and avoid end of day traffic. Reasonable price too. We also took the train after riding our bikes to get from around Wrigley Field back to our hotel. Nice journey.

The only way to get around Chicago.
May 2021 • Couples
When in Chicago especially if you are staying downtown this is the best and most cost effective way to get around. We parked our car in the hotel and never saw it again until we left 4 days later. CTA gets you quickly and efficiently to museums, attractions and shops everywhere. Example: the 151 Sheridan will get you to Lincoln Park zoo and also to the Art Institute. The 146 bus will take you to the Field Museum, Adler Planetarium and the Shed Aquarium. If you come to Chicago often get a Ventra card (or get the app)that you can load money or passes to ride the CTA without fumbling for cash. I loaded money on each of our cards from home and was good to go the moment I left the hotel. Drivers are friendly and helpful. Yeah, it’s not NYC. Midwesterners are great people.

Blue Line Train is best way from O'Hare to downtown
May 2021 • Couples
On our first trip to Chicago, we took a taxi. As we sat stopped on the highway in traffic, we watched the train zip by. Ever since then, we take the CTA Blue Line Train from O'Hare to downtown. It is dependable, air conditioned, and comfortable enough for the 45 minute trip. Use google maps to sort out the best CTA route for your trip.

Riding the Blue Line outbound to O'Hare
May 2021
Taking the Blue to O'Hare.
It gets you there. Slowly but surely. Agonizingly slowly.
Took about 45 minutes from the Loop to the airport's station.
Not for the faint of heart or those who tend to anxiety.
Leave yourself time.
Elevators may - or may NOT work. Be prepared for the worst.
You get a lot of steps (a good thing) walking underground in the airport through nice walkways until you get to your terminal. And "magically" you're in the middle of the check-in.
So it's nice to have an "EL" or a subway or a metro to the airport. Works - gets you there. Hope this helps.

Horrible
Mar 2021 • Solo
He 81 west to Jefferson park bus decided not to stop this morning on Lawrence. She,the driver just passed by us,looking into our face, not being willing to stop. She had only a few passengers. The next one will come in like half an hour.
The busses, the metra are constantly delayed ,late. And now dont even stop. Obviously I'll be late to work. So summa summarum. If you dont have to. Dont use Cta. They are unreliable. dirty. And the drivers. especially the women are walking talking attitudes. Feel like they own the bus. Horrible. But i guess. This is what america became.

on time and great way to travel

We traveled the L all the time in Chicago, each stop has a great countdown screen to tell you how long your wait for the next train. Also the busses were just as good.

A Good Way To Get Around Chicago
Apr 2019
My wife and I used both the buses and trains run by the CTA during our stay in Chicago. The trains are more commonly known as the L and can be elevated, subway and more conventional. I particularly enjoyed the elevated sections as they provided a great view of the city and a fresh perspective. You can buy unlimited travel passes covering 1, 3, 7 or 30 days which are great value if you are doing a lot of travel within the city. I'd definitely recommend using the CTA buses and the L for getting around Chicago.

We left 70 degree weather and landed in Chicago when it was about 10 degrees. We bought 3 day ($20) Ventra pass at Midway and boarded the (heated) orange line to the Loop. We transferred to the red line and our hotel was next door to a red line stop. We have used CTA to get around Chicago visiting places in all directions. We've planned our trips in advance and have enjoyed the short walks to our destinations (despite the low temps). Anytime we' ve needed a quick question answered the CTA employees have been very polite and helpful (orange Midway, blue Grand and red Lake stations, thank you!). Definitely recommend CTA and you do not have to pay for ride share or rent a car.
