Cotopaxi is the second highest peak in Ecuador rising to 19,347 ft. From a distance, it is a beautiful, snow and ice covered cone reaching into the sky. Closer up it can be a bit intimidating. In fact, the route to the summit is nicknamed...More

The views are breathtaking. But it is better to book tour ahead. The tourist company at the entrance of volcano is monopoly and they are pricey. They do not like groups of even 3 people. Good hiking shoes are advised.

This volcano is 6 feet higher at the peak than Kilimanjaro but the climb is significantly tougher. After driving to the flanks of the volcano there is about a 1 hour climb to the Refugio, a lodge. They have bunks for an overnight stay and...More

We climbed only to the station and that was quite enough, as you are at almost 16,000 ft (about 4800 meters). Guides are local, indigenous people and ours (Paulina) was wonderful, though I'm pretty sure she is part mountain goat. The views are spectacular and...More

Had an amazing time at Cotopaxi. Such an amazing place to appreciate nature. I have never imagined a snow capped volcano could exist. This place is magic!

We visited Cotopaxi for just a night to see the view and enjoy an afternoon’s walk along the base of the volcano. It’s a fair drive and whilst we were fine in a hired car the drive was difficult, so I’d recommend getting a driver...More

I am always looking for a "cheap" way to enjoy my vacations. Cotopaxi was not the exception. To visit this impressive mountain, I took a local bus southbound from Quito (direction: Ambato). It cost me $3 and 1 hour drive. I asked the driver to...More

John and I trained for this hike by doing some very steep trails near our home, but we live at 1400 feet and there was no way to replicate the elevation! So breathing on Cotopaxi was a real challenge. My trick is when I get...More

Muy chévere - had a great view of the volcano on a clear day. Our guide said it’s not very common to have such a clear day for this kind of view, but even on a cloudier day, it’d still be an impressive sight!

Sorry for the late response (I hope you did not go without proper gear). If you are willing to climb up to the second station (half-way). Just a medium-heavy jacket will do. If you want to make it to the top, you will have... More

Yes, there are guides waiting 1 mile before the entrance, and I am pretty sure they can take your bag.
