- swift-simbaCamberley, United Kingdom8,345 contributionsAn impressive structureThis is an incredible structure and so large with so many corridors. It was so hard to comprehend how it was made . It apparently took 3 1/2 years to excavate. It was only used for 9 months. You are given a map and there are very good signs to guide you around and there are signs to help you find your way around. The corridors are lined in Concrete sections and some are lined with bricks. It must have been very oppressive. There are some interesting information board that tell you about some of the Guernsey people of the time. There are displays of items to see and some hospital wards with beds. The beds where very close together. There were some escape ladders that would have been quite frightening to use. If you visit wear warm clothing as it is quite chilly when you walk around. Suitable shoes for damp and wet floors are useful. It is certainly an impressive structure that must have been terrifying for those involved in its creation. Good place to visit on a wet day.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 November 2023
- norman s1 contributionNot for young kids.Note I clicked above to say April 2023 - read the text below for the actual date. My journey into these underground hospitals was back in 1964. Not a good experience for a ten year old. I suffered nightmares for years to come. Back then the place was a desserted wreck. I was told the islanders smashed all the lighting. The walls were streaming water everwhere you went. So this is not a new problem due to design or age of construction. From most of the pictures I can see from the present day it has not changed much in the last 60 years.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 March 2024
- Brian WGosport, United Kingdom233 contributionsImpressive underground Tunnel SystemThe largest of all the German Tunnels on Gurnsey which was a hospital and ammunition store. Don’t expect masses of displays, there are a few, but just being able to walk around this impressive structure gives you an idea of what it must have been like during the occupation. Some original fixtures and fittings remain, including heating and kitchen appliances. Well worth a visit, with a very friendly and knowledgeable member of staff in the ticket office.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 April 2024
- Kira_vallinsCrawley, United Kingdom78 contributionsGood place to visit especially if the weather is not good2nd visit as we were here also in 2013. A few more things to look at that weren't they last time. Was raining so chose to go and was met by the gorgeous Justine. I've been chatting to her online about a year now. Hubby enjoyed more than me as he loves his WW2 stuff.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 May 2024

- ScotinEnglandSt Anne, United Kingdom2,114 contributionsA step back in timeA very informative experience based on the war years in Guernsey. Very good information boards and clear signage around the underground hospital. The entrance guy was most helpful in directing access to where to go. Quite an amazing labyrinth tunnels and information about the German presence on the island during World War II. Well worth the entrance fee of £5.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 June 2024
- KennethSouthampton, United Kingdom44 contributionsA MUST SEEOn visiting Guernsey this German Underground Hospital situated in St Andrew not far from the Airport was the most Impressive feat of engineering we have seen . Walking around on your own was a little creepy , and would suggest an extra layer of clothing , as can be very cold and damp also appropriate footwear. The tunnels were well sign posted for the walk around giving you easy access to view everything including interesting exhibits to read , with heart rending stories . Allow at least 1 . 5 hours for a casual walk , felt welcome on arrival by knowledgeable staff member. Overall a humbling experience.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 June 2024
- Eurotraveller53London, United Kingdom120 contributionsFascinating underground structuresVery interesting and quite fascinating (in an eerie sort of way) to see the vast underground tunnels built by the German military during the World War II occupation of Guernsey. Definitely worth a visit when in Guernsey, if you are interested in WWII history.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 July 2024
- Peter A17 contributionsA realistic trip into the past.Curiosity was a major reason for visiting the underground hospital. There is ample parking but unfortunately only one portable toilet. The price is reasonable at £5 per adult. The corridors are original with some original equipment to be found but not that much to occupy the interest of visitors. There are information provided on islanders who sacrificed a lot during the occupation on posters. The lighting and atmosphere gives you a realistic idea of being in a bunker during the era. Might not be suitable for anyone not accustomed to close spaces.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 3 September 2024

Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Walking around the tunnels brings home how life was for those that constructed the hospital, especially in the unfinished link tunnel. I would recommend a warm top to wear when walking around as it is eerily cold. Damp underfoot but that is to be expected as it is as the title suggests and underground facility.

If you like WWII history, don’t miss seeing this. It may be damp and dreary for some but you will feel for the slaves and workers who toiled underground to build this. It’s well lit and contains interesting artifacts. I find it a little creepy and compelling. Bus number 71 has a stop a short walk away, or there’s ample parking across the street. The attendant is very knowledgeable.

One hour walking identical tunnels, 95% of which were completely empty. 2 had bed frames and one the remains of a stove,
It was cold and damp and after the first 10 minutes incredibly dull.
Some staged displays to show what that section was would help. The display boards were interesting

This is the best museum. If you do any in Guernsey this is the one to do. The others have the same information and stories but so much more!
The gentleman running this museum has curated almost all of the items on display.
Get there early as there is a lot to see and read, but so worth the time.

This is a fascinating yet haunting place. A labyrinth of passages thankfully well signposted takes you deep underground to experience the lengths went to by the Germans to build the place. Only in use for three months it took three years to build by forced labour. Details of some individuals who were enslaved there can be read as well as information about how it was built and what is was ultimately used for. Very well lit and overall well presented preserving this piece of history which is so important.

An easy 20-Minute bus ride from the port brought us here. We spent about 75 minutes going through the museum. It’s sprawling—the large empty spaces are part of the draw. But there are also interesting artifacts and mostly good labels explaining things. Only £4.50 a person, and the learning experience was well worth it for us.

Informative guide at entrance. Not expensive. Car parking just opposite. Impressive excavations but I did not find much inside. Lots of condensation inside making floors a bit wet etc.

This museum was very interesting as I had no knowledge of these hospitals existing. It is full of long damp cold corridors and very atmospheric. There is very little information in the actual corridors they are left to speak for themselves and I think they would benefit from some recreation of how thr6y looked. However it was very sobering and fascinating and definitely worth a visit.

I visited the underground hospital with my teenage son who is about to join the RAF. He found it fascinating. This is my second visit to the site, my original visit being over 20 years ago. In that time the site has been upgraded and I really enjoyed my revisit. I would recommend visiting it and it’s especially comfortable on a hot day as the tunnels provide cool and pleasant surroundings !

I have just looked at the website and it says the underground hospital is closed until further notice. Is this right?

Hi how would we get here by bus from St Peter port many thanks
Written 13 August 2017
Think I used bus 71....if you go on Guernsey Buses website, there is a timetable...buses every 30 minutes or so I believe and £1 each way!
Written 17 August 2017
I would think it unlikely, but worth contacting the owners as they may be happy to arrange for you to view it. Well worth it if you can.
Written 18 May 2017
How do I get there taking public transportation? How long does it take to tour?
Written 12 March 2017
If you take the 71 bus from town just ask for "Underground Hospital". It is then a short walk down the road. It takes how long you make it - it can be done in 30 mins but have spent 1hr and 30 down there before
