About
Our most popular day starts with a trip to a local market to buy the very best, fresh produce and then we head back to Ida's compound to prepare, cook and eat what we have made with like minded, social people. Have a look at our reviews to see what people think. We have started Come Dine with Ida too - please enquire for more information. COME DINE WITH IDA is also suitable for groups who would like to have authentic Gambian food in a Gambian home. Transportation is included in all my trips.

We have just returned from our first trip to The Gambia and one of our favourite experiences was the day spent with Ida and her family, learning to cook domedah. We were picked up from our hotel and taken to Ida’s house with its lovely outside courtyard kitchen. Dressing up in Gambia clothes before we headed off to the market was great fun!
Shopping with Ida in Tanji market was a great experience, so much to see - if you like people watching while you shop you will love this part.
We then went back to Ida’s and everyone helped to prepare the raw ingredients. When it came to the cooking you could be as involved as you liked, but if you wanted to just watch that was also ok - a very relaxed environment. Local games were played while the food cooked.
Lunch in the garden was delicious and not a drop wasted! We would thoroughly recommend this. Thank you Ida and everyone who helped on the day!

We took Ida's 9AM-2PM cooking class and it lived up to and then exceeded our expectations. The visit to the Tanji market alone to shop would have been worth the price, it is an unforgettable experience. We then went back to Ida's compound/kitchen to begin preparing our dish. We chose to prepare Mackeral Domoda. Ida and her (mainly three) other chefs walked us through the process of preparing the dish, and we helped during all stages of the cooking. The finished product was so fresh and delicious. We also played Gambian games, and Ida was a wonderful hostess, allowing us to win the game...haha. She truly is the Queen of the Gambia in our minds. A wonderful woman who we will stay in touch with, with the highest class, authentic experience. If you visit the Gambia, this needs to be one of the three things you definitely do.

What a wonderful experience, from donning tradition dress, buying ingredients at the market to seeing our fish leave the fishing boat and eating a wonderful meal. Ida gave us the run of her home, passed on numerous tips and even introduced us to one of the local strategy games.

This is a must-do, while in the Gambia!
Ms. Ida is an exceptional woman, with exceptional culinary and hosting skills.

We had our service team's finale dinner with Yabouy and there could not have been a better choice. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was full of love and she allowed us to ask questions and know of Gambia beyond the tourist experience.

I highly recommend this experience.

The whole experience was both fun and enlightening. Introduction to real Gambian cooking with Ida and her team, made more fun by dressing up to start with (don't be shy - everyone does it!) and then of course the visit to Tanji fish market which is just brilliant and an experience in its own right. We've since tried the fish yassa at home - what memories!

Thoroughly recommend this. Got picked up from the hotel. Dressed in Gambian attire and went shopping for fish and vegetables at the market. Helped prepare the veg. and was taught the Gambian game of Wuri.

We were running out of time in the Gambia and wanted to do something on our last day. Our rep from The Gambia Experience recommended Ida and said she may be able to accommodate us not on a day that she works, which we're so glad to say she did! We were picked up at our hotel by her son who took us the short distance to her beautiful home. She welcomed us and got us changed into traditional Gambian style clothing that her sister makes. She had all different sizes and colours. We then made our way in the cars to a market FILLED with what felt like thousands of local people. It was bustling with sellers of veg, fruit, oils, herbs, spices. We made our way following Ida to the fish where she picked up some barracuda. We each had a basket, and we were given various parts of the meal so everyone was involved. We chopped up the veg and we're shown how they make the meal, and we're shown an African game called wuri while the meal was cooking. The smells were gorgeous but when we were finally able to eat the meal it was delicious! I'm not a big fish fan, but couldn't get enough of this local gambian dish. Highly recommend

When travelling we always like to sample the local cuisine. This experience also gives you a chance to purchase food from the local markets and to help cook your own meal in a traditional style at Ida's home.
Ida's hospitality and her eagerness to share with you the Gambian way of life should not be missed.
We enjoyed the day so much, when we return to the Gambia we will certainly repeat the experience.

Ida is an exceptional, intelligent woman as well as a great cook. She supports local enterprise when shopping and she takes time to explain how, despite seemingly crazy chaos, the local markets and fishing communities work. With her you will experience buying, cooking and eating, learn about local enterprise and maybe meet her neighbours' kids to join in the fun. So glad I booked this one and would book again.

We booked Ida's home cooking through Gambia Experience. Having done almost all the other tours Shirley thought this would be very different, and it certainly was, We were joined by Suzanne from Sweden so there were only three in the group.

This is probably one of the best excursions we have ever booked in the Gambia.

The visit to the local vegetable and fish market and the local butcher was very good. Ida and the girls working for her helped us prepare and cook the beef domoda.
Whilst the dish was cooking, Ida taught us to play the Gambian game 'Wuri'.

Also, whist we were there Ida was on CNN TV Channel - the 'Out of Africa' programme.

A lovely meal was then eaten under the tree in Ida's garden, finishing what had been a fascinating and very relaxing day. Ida also fed some of the local children with what we had cooked.

This excursion was worth very penny it cost, and more.

Thank you Ida for making us so welcome and introducing us to cooking in the gambian way. It was an experience that will stay in our memories for a very long time.
