Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A famous black sand beach situated in South Coast of Iceland. We've seen many video's and photos of people taking pictures by the basalt columns. When we visited in February, it had share of tourists. However, there are plenty of black sands to go around. Just be careful not to turn your back to the ocean too long, especially, taking pictures of people on the basalt columns. Big waves comes in sporadically and unexpectedly.

Even on a cold, windy, rainy day this was an enjoyable walk. The parking area is a short walk from the beach. You can also enjoy strolling the beach just be mindful of the powerful waves. Bathrooms are available for 300 ISK which can be paid by credit card.

So mystical!

How to get there? From Route 1 turn to (right or left depending which direction you are going) Route 215 and go 5.9 km (6 min) to the parking lot (there is also a restaurant called Black Beach Restaurant). This is just 10 minutes from Vík í Mýrdal (approx. 11 km), which is the closest town.

Experience: speaking only about these rocks it is simply impressive. They are just located near the shore, so if you walk on the sand beach (Reynisfjara) will be able to get a closer look of these stunning formations.
There is other way to watch them from above. We did not try it, but it seems you can go up to the cliffs of Reynisfjall, by a road to the west of Vík. Not sure if is an easy or hard path, so if you feel comfortable with your physical condition try it.
The legend tells, that these rocks were originally 2 trolls; to make long story short, they saw a ship at the night, tried to reach it, and as usual in all troll stories, the sun made its appearance and now they and the ship are immortalized as these incredible rock formations.

Opening Hours: all day (not sure if you can see something during night).

Cost: parking and admission are free.

Duration: one hour and a half if you chose the beach. Not sure how much if you go to the cliffs.

Other: if you go and watch them to the Reynisfjall cliffs, in summer it is supposed that you can also watch a lot of puffins.

You have to stop by the beach and see this if you are going by Vik. It's the story of the three stone structures that people believe were Trolls who were trying to drag ships ashore. Apparently more than 50% of Icelanders believe in trolls. There are also smaller rock structures all over the north that people believe trolls live in. The sun is important when photographing this area. In mid day it can be rather uneventful but in the evening the yellow sky actually creates a deep blue around the stone structures. In Vik you can easily see all three stone structures but on the black beach only two are easily available. Definitely go to the black beach, but drive around to the other side for a photo of all 3 stone structures.

Amazing sea stacks of rock... Incredibly beautiful formations for seascapes. Must see. We arrived here in the morning and the light was very good for photos. You have to drive a little bit from the road to get here (also there is no access directly from VIK, so you need to go around the hill). Has a parking lot right next to it and you should expect to stay here for 20 to 40 minutes.

It is one of my favourite place in Iceland, is magic. I decided to sleep there 2 nights, on a cottage on the beach, managed by Garđar farm: it was one of he best experience in Iceland. One day I enjoyed Reynisfjara beach and he day after I climbed Reynisdrangar from the beach, it s around 2h of street: I thought to be in Paradise. My heart is still there.

Pros:
- basalt columns are really cool
- cool cave only accessible during low tide
- black sand beach!
- 5 minute walk from car park.
- can see Dyrholaey in the distance.

Cons:
- parking is partly in black sand - our car got stuck on it and we had to be towed out by friendly tourists.

Tips:
- find out when low tide is so you can access the cave.
- columns on the side are very climb-able.

Reynisdrangar are impressive rock formations situated near the shore of Reynisfjara beach. They are said to be the remains of some basalt sea cliffs. You cannot miss them once you reach Reynisfjara beach.

One of those odd moments in life...I was dying to see this for well over a year after seeing pictures online...but once I got here I was kind of disappointed. After a long 2.5 hour drive from Reykjavik, half it through rain, we spent maybe 10-15 minutes here looking around.

It was pretty and unique, the waves frightening, and not crowded...but the big "WOW" factor was just missing for me. The basalt columns weren't all that interesting and the cave didn't go in very deep. Oh well...
