About
Iceland's most famous volcano and still very active. The mountain is 1,491 m high and towers impressively above the lowlands of the south. For centuries, Hekla was thought to be the gateway to Hell. There are many walking tracks with the easiest ascent of Hekla is from Raudaskal crater parking. It is 7km each way.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We saw this via a super jeep tour, to be honest unless you've got the time and stamina for a long hike it's probably the only way to get here. The road is a rough track where you're literally driving over mounds of lava. Super bumpy and some deep ditches. The lava fields however makes for a spectacular alien landscape that is beautiful and desolate. Our guide explained to us as we drove closer to Hekla that the lava fields were fresher closer to the volcano. We drove around the foot of Hekla which had some snow on it which we were told is a good sign because if the snow has melted it's probably going to blow it also makes for a great tonal contrast to the black landscape in photographs.

We stopped at Rauðaskáls a red punchbowl crater that has an extensive and awesome view from the rim. Here there is a path that goes all the way down the mountain side. When we were there a bunch of people were coming up which is pretty impressive since the track is suppose to be long and steep. Hekla is spectacular so however you chose to get here defiantly put this place on your itinerary.

If you go to Landmannaugar on the way back you drive so close to the Hekla vulcano. It is very impressive to see if you know this vulcano can errupt any time. The lava field around it is special to walk on.

The drive out here was INCREDIBLE. It was like driving on another planet. The black black rock against the white sky and the vivid blue river was incredible. We got lost and that's how we found it but so glad we did.

We had an SUV and could not make it on many of the "roads" so be careful if you aren't in a super-Jeep. In fact, we drove half way up the volcano and had to drive backwards down it because we couldn't continue. This was day 1 of our honeymoon and there were many tears and lots of screaming. Still, 5/5, would go again.

We toured around the lower reaches of Hekla as it was Spring and it wasn't really safe to go too far up the volcano. It is truly majestic. Erupting every ten or so years it must be time soon for it to vent its contents. Worth a stop enroute to the Southern Coast attractions / waterfalls.

I visited the volcano hekla in january 2019. It was a must do in iceland! I parked my car at the hekla sign. And started hiking. It was an amazing hike, all day long. Because it was snowing a lot and i was in the middle of a snowstorm. But after 5 hours hiking, i reached the top of the hekla. And it is the number one of the actives volcanos in the world.

Very demanding 3-4hr hike, as there is not really a path directing your way.
Only do this if you have good hiking conditions. At Hotel Leirubakki, they can give you information about the hike.
We had the gps coordinates on our walking gps and got of the 'path' sometimes.
Be aware of the high risk to hike up, have your cellphone close at all times!
Coming from Hella, the gravel road to the feet of Hekla can be easy missed, so plan your road ahead!
You can drive up the gravel road, as we did and parked the car at the information shields.

My wife and I visited Hekla because we wanted to see the volcano and area before it erupted. (They are saying any day now)
Recommended drive is up RT 26 from RT 1 (Ring Road). You get pretty close. If you want to get closer without climbing her then drive down gravel road 268. However, if the volcano is about to erupt, don't be an idiot and do what I did because the road takes you through the lava field of its last eruption. (Not the place to find out a new "imminent" warning has been issued like we did)
Enjoy!

Super beautiful and amazing volcano. You can see it while driving in South Iceland, you just have to know that this exact mountain actually is Hekla.

Helka Volcano is the 15 year clock of Iceland and I think it is overdue. Standing alone in a very viewable spot seen from many into and out in multiple directions from Selfoss, Iceland it is a great photographer's subject. Enjoy but keep informed of any impending events.
