As the name implies, the organization is a history museum which collects, preserves, exhibits and interprets objects and images which relate to past people and events of the local community. Founded in 1921, the Society has grown from a small exhibit assembled by the DAR and shown at the Allen County Courthouse to be the largest locally relevant historical museum in northeastern Indiana. The collection has expanded to over 27,000 objects and thousands of images. The History Center now occupies the Old City Building, circa 1893. In addition, the Society acquired the 1827 Chief Richardville house in 1991, and the Barr Street Market in 1991.

I visited it with my sister, nephew, niece and godson. First, the building is beautiful. Built in the 1800's. It is one of the old city halls. It has many things to see inside. In the basement, it has the old jail cells and upstairs the courtroom has been renovated to it's original colors from the time period. The main... More

We enjoyed a trip to this museum as part of our Fort Wayne vacation. We thought it would be a great way to spend an hour, but we wish we had more time! Exhibits were surprisingly well done and interesting to more than just history buffs

If you have just a short time, and you're into history, this is a quick visit. We saw everything in an hour. Interesting presidential display, railroad moguls from the city, plus the All American Girls Baseball local celebrity display. Also had some of the old jail available to walk through in the basement.

The outside is a lovely building. Inside is a small but nice collection. I wouldn't spend much to get in, but the cost is only $6. We received free admission due to our membership in a historical society elsewhere. Spent only an hour there.

It is very good learning place to go. We enjoy this place very well. Have no problems here. You can see the old jail at this place here.

This place is really cool! You will enjoy everything about this place. I came here with a friend, and it was a blast. The old jail is probably my favorite part!

The History center is in the old Fort Wayne City Hall building nicknamed the "Hapsburg Horror." As far as I know, the building isn't haunted and no violent crimes were committed there. In fact, people who committed crimes got to spend time in the basement jail. The name refers to the architectural style and the cost of construction. Free parking... More

Went to the Museum with four kids ranging from 4-12 years and they all loved the place. Includes a fun and creepy old jail, dollhouse and interesting items from Fort Wayne history. Great admission price plus it is free to the public during Saturday's in the summer during Barr St Market

For those with an interest in Indiana, specifically Allen County history this place is a must see. The displays are changed regularly and are well curated and focused. The museum offers periodic talks by experts. Learn something new on each trip.

This is a great stop for a quick visit. It offers a nice overview of Fort Wayne history but doesn't go too much in depth.
