Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Amberd deserves its sobriquet "Fortress in the Clouds" : build in the 10th-century, it sits 2,300m above sea level on the slopes of Mt Aragats where the Arkashen and Amberd rivers meet. Like most of these fortresses in the Caucasus, it's had a violent history : it got attacked, destroyed and changed hands often. The Mongols did a thorough job in 1236, so the current ruins you see are the result of their invasion - but some substantial re-construction was started mid 20th century.
Interesting detail : It is quite unusual to find a sophisticated bath house in this type building. Worth a better look because it is still in fairly good condition.
You can still sense the might of these enormous fortifications and see the strategic importance of its location. The views across the gorges and valleys are sensational.

OK, It's a ruin of an old fort posted on a hilltop. The trip towars this site take a lot more than the visits of the site itself. The location if nice with stunning views of the surrounding bare landscape.

There was lot of snow around and the ruins are ok. Not much of attraction but a good place over all considering the view around. It's not much worth of the admission ticket.

The location is perfect, service is mediocre, we had to wait till waiter decided to take our order. The worst was the food. We ordered tenderloin medium rare , OMG. It was beef but not tenderloin and cooked so much we couldn’t cut with knife,
This is very bad place to eat.

Magnificent views of the Fortress and the surrounding landscape as we drove the very winding, narrow and pot-holed road to reach our destination.

The citadel remains in parts, with a large portion of the fortification walls, bath house and the Vahramashen Church (built in 1026) still intact.

The complex is 2,300 metres above sea level.

We walked around the fortress, down to the church and then along to the bath house. The rugged scenery surrounding the site was breathtaking.

This is one of those "picture-postcards" scenery experiences that you see in advertising brochures.

Whilst there were many tourists at the site we were certainly pleased to have had the opportunity to visit Amberd.

Great views of and around fortress and church. It sits on a peninsula overlooking sparsely forested hills. Nicely kept and well worth a visit to reflect on the past.

The remains of an ancient fortress, destroyed by the conquerors in the ninth century, still reign over the gorges and the valley, guarding their peace. Even in this state, the fortress makes a great impression. Time has not spared neither the walls nor the interior, but the ensemble retains its beauty., successfully complemented by the Church, standing in some distance.

We visited the fortress on a hot summer day. It takes about 1.5 hours from Yerevan to get there on a narrow road. Entrance is free. Once you get there, you will find stunning views to two gorges surrounding the 1000 year old ruins of Amberd fortress and the nearby functioning church. Would highly recommend for those who like the outdoors- but not suitable for children or the elderly.
