Beautiful place, it is advisable to leave early and reach the place before sunset. Do stargazing in night and have a spectacular view of sunrise. Marvellous place.

Chandratal lake is at 3340 metres above sea level. Normally all tour operators and tourists wish for overnight camp stay.
Experience of staying in the camp may be thrilling for those who never ever been to any camping.
One has to start AMS sickness tablets (Diamox or so) at least 48 hrs. Prior to coming to high altitude areas. Moreover, diabetic personnel are restricted to consume AMS tabs (better check with your own doctor).
Let me explain in brief. First, its advisable only for those, who can breath well in such a high altitude. Very few camps (2 / 3) provide complete facilities, mainly oxygen facilities during an emergency.
Oxygen refilling plant is at Kaza. And camp personnel get oxygen refilled from Kaza.
Now, how can one know, the quantity previous tourist has consumed? and how much oxygen is remained in the bottle? Even, camp personnel also don't know, no such measuring unit or meter.
Its difficult, in case if cylinder is found empty during emergency. So, please double check with camp personnel.
All camps are almost 2 kms away from the Chandratal car parking area (not the lake). The trek starts from the parking point, from where the lake is further, about 1.5 – 2 kms. trek.
Govt. has restricted about 2 kms. area around the lake as a no camp zone. So, no camp is nearby or close to the lake. If some camp owners claim, they are telling white lie. Its my personal experience.
No so called, goody goody romantic tent placed near the lake (its only in bollywood films, playing guitar on lake shore, here your strings will be torn) in a chilly weather.
Rest is up to you, better get an experience.
Personally, my suggestion not to stay at Chandratal lake, but of course, visit the lake, enjoy the tracking and either move to Manali or Kaza for stay and overall safety.

Far away from the hustle bustle life of the city’s. This place really justifies the feel of “In the middle of nowhere’.
The Moon Lake - Chandrataal, a lake situated in high altitude, hidden between the Mountains of Himalayan Range in Himachal Pradesh, Which is one such beautiful lakes in between those mountains. The lake gets its name Chandra Taal, which means “The Moon Lake” in Hindi. Mountains reflection in the lake makes the lake look more stunning.
A lake situated at approximately 13500ft above sea level. The lake has many legends associated with it and one can feel and experience each of them as you approach the lake.

Above 4,300 metres (14,100 ft) in the Himalayas Mountains I found my home Chandratal lake.
The name originated from it's crescent shape. It overlooks the Chandratal river. It's one of the hidden attraction of Himachal Pradesh of India. Situated in the Lahul & Spiti district of Himachal.
Chandra Taal is a tourist destination for trekkers and campers. You can go by foot from Batal as well as from Kunzum Pass. Though I had my most adventures SOLO ROAD TRIP going there by a four-wheeler.And Almighty only know how that all happend( P.S.Theres a motor road accessible as far as a parking lot 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from the lake).
Accommodation is available 5 kilometres from the lake. Vast meadows on the banks of the lake are used as camping sites. I stayed at one of the camps under the MILKY WAY ( literally) on a July night .
This trek ,this ride is one of the most difficult difficult one in Himachal,Himalays. At times it did feel an gonna make it because of the road, landslide, cloudburst and the weather. But I can guarantee as a Solo Female Traveler to all the travelers...it's worth giving a try. No one will regret it. No one ever did. All you will have an enchanting & tantalizing memory for ever.
I did find my peace here. 😌
I have traveled through desserts,
I have traveled through the sea.
And here in the mountains;
I stand...
Where my home is going to be.

Visiting Chandratal was a dream come true for me.
our day started early, with us leaving for Chandratal at 4:20am. We had no idea if we would manage to reach there, as it had been raining for 2 days straight, and boy, did we have no idea about anything else!
Leaving Manali was quick and easy, and reaching Rohtang too was a breeze.. the views were breathtaking with the Beas flowing by our side and many waterfalls, big and small rushing to meet the river.
Rohtang top was where the roads ended. Beyond Rohtang top was mostly dirt tracks trying to pass themselves for a road, and with the rain it was muddy and treacherous. But the worst was yet to come.. the point we diverted for Spiti valley, was good bye to even a semblance of a dirt road. It was The bumpiest car ride ever with mind blowing views, Chandra river flowing by our side and countless rivulets or nullahs crossing over the track where we had to navigate running water, mud and boulders. Our first stop was at a small place called Chatru, where we had tea and hot Maggi at 7:15 in the morning. The steaming hot cup of tea and even hotter Maggi got warm in seconds and cold in less than 2 minutes! I stood by the stoves to keep myself warm and then stood near a mud chulha where fresh rotis were being made. Somewhere after this pit stop, midway between Chatru and Chota Dara, we finally found fellow travellers coming back from the other way, maybe from Kaza.. and they said Chandratal is inaccessible because of the bad weather and rains.. our driver Gopal told us not to worry, as we would find out in Batal.. but Amit n I started preparing ourselves mentally that even after this hard ride, we might eventually not get to go to that famed space that I had been planning for since 2010.
Gods were on our side though, and at Batal which was our second stop, we met riders who were coming back from Chandratal and told us to proceed ahead to the lake. Oh boy, we just ran back to our car without any refreshments, eager to get there before the weather decided to play spoil sport again. Chandratal, finally.. 7 hours of driving, reaching the nearest point and then walking for 20 minutes, all the while not even a glimpse and me wondering if it will live up to my high expectations and the huge build up of the last 8 years! It took my breath away.. I had a big goofy grin on my face, and I just looked and looked and looked, not being able to believe the place, or the fact that I was there! The clear water surrounded by desert mountains, snow peaks and green hills, a quaint beach and the gorgeous colours reflecting off the crystal clear waters.. every angle had a different view, a different colour. and yes, I did click once I got over the crazy awe 😊
Spiti is a magical landscape.. a cold desert is what it used to be, but I got to see it in the rains, wet, green, cloudy and full of waterfalls and nullahs. Chatru was where the greenery reduced and then ended totally at Chota Dara. After that it was a desert of rocks, big and small. The colours ranged from purple to ochre to red, orange, green and black, sometimes all these colours on one big rock or the mountain face! What my eyes saw, the camera couldn’t capture, but I have them stored in my memory now😊. This desert was interspersed with some beautiful yellow and lavender flowers, fighting to add life to this graveyard of rocks..gorgeous! I close my eyes and I see the crazy tracks we travelled across, with at least 4 places where the car could have got stuck in the over flowing and fast moving nullahs.. the sound of mountain springs, tires screeching over muddy tracks and sheep crossing over to their pastures.. all these and more are deeply entrenched in my mind, and some captured as beautiful pictures to treasure and talk about

If you have been to Pangong Tso then you may skip Chandra Taal. Its cold and the facilities are nowhere near Pangong Tso. The tents are not that great and gets very cold and soggy.

We planned this visit from Spiti, kaza. The road was terrible to this place, Himachal Pradesh should be shameful for this bad maintenance of their road infrastructure, i suggest everyone not to go to this place, No network in this area, you ll be feeling trapped in this area.

'Tso Chigma ' or Chandra Taal (meaning the Lake of the Moon)...has a peripheral 'parikrama' of 4 km which is worth walking around , as at every step one gets to see amazingly different views of the lake , surrounding mountains and of the reflection of the mountains in the crystal clear , calm and steady water of the lake .Located at 14100 feet , this high altitude lake surely is ' number one ' attraction of this incredibly beautiful area . Do spend every hour from dawn to dusk here as every minute its a amazingly different spectacle .
