About
Belvoir Castle is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Rutland. The family has lived at Belvoir in an unbroken line for almost a thousand years. Crowning a hill in Leicestershire, its turrets and towers rise over the Vale of Belvoir like an illustration in a romantic fairytale. Belvoir is also a venue for weddings, private and corporate events, an estate rich of history and traditional farming and forestry practices. With a dedication to charitable foundations and local community.

    A lovely day out
Didn't know too much about Belvoir Castle (pronounced Beaver) but it looked good and was on our route before our trip around the east coast. It is very well maintained and run with informative staff in every room ready to answer your questions. It has an interesting history, as most castles do, but we really enjoyed the gardens - despite the dodgy weather. It is worth exploring every inch of the gardens, not just those near the castle as it holds many surprises and is a fantastic walk if nothing else. After the castle we visited the farm shop and café area opposite which is very, very nice. Has a great vibe about it and has lots to offer al the family. Overall the family owners have made a great effort to make this a pleasurable expereience and we think they have succeeded!

    Amazing Place…not to be missed!!
My brother and I visited this spectacular castle last week and it surpassed all our expectations. Beautiful gardens, and interiors and we were so lucky to have Cheryl as our guide…so impressive! She provided a very thorough and enjoyable tour explaining the interesting history over the years. Highly recommend this gem in the Midlands and don’t forget to take the tour plus a visit to the tea room afterwards. Kathy and Stephen September 25th, 2023

    DO THE TOUR!!
Fantastic day at Belvoir Castle. Had a lovely visit with a friend. The castle is split into public and private areas and it is absolutely beautiful. We paid extra for the tour and we’re so pleased we did. We had the amazing Sue to show us around, it was brilliant and would definitely do it again. Sue told us so many stories and so much information which really brought the castle to life. In fact, everyone we spoke to while we were there were, approachable, knowledgeable and professional, a real credit to the Castle. There is so much history in that place, if only walls could talk! There are some very delicate items which are showing their age but still beautiful and lovely to see. Many rooms and areas are instantly recognisable from TV and films. We had afternoon tea while we were there. It didn’t look like it would be enough for two but it was perfectly adequate. All in all, a wonderful day, but Sue was the star here and made it really special.
Thank you for this wonderful feedback, we will pass this onto Sue directly too. We are so pleased you had an enjoyable day and Afternoon Tea! We hope to see you again.

    Birthday surprise trip
Well we arrived earlier had a quick look around the gardens. Had been a wedding this weekend so in a bit of a pickle our visit was first thing Monday. Was a little disappointed with first impressions however my husband ordered our cream tea - very delicious even though the staff apologies for being under staffed. The two ladies were very attentive, obliging made my treat of a day very memorable. On to a guided tour around the castle essential to do. I’m sure our guide was Sharn her knowledge and experiences were by far better than anything you would get out of a tour guide book, just fantastic open to discussing and answering questions. This is a family home seeing both the duke and his son enjoying their day and going about their business. Our one negative was the parking meters didn’t realise you had to buy a ticket on entry ticket office guide came to our aid - the car park meters do accept cash £6 for a day or £1.20an hr. To sum up our day if we don’t support places like this we will lose them thank yo to the duke for letting us into your home
We really appreciate this feedback, and you're very right, the upkeep that goes on at Belvoir Castle is immense and we are so pleased you can support us. We hope you come back and visit soon! Thank you.

Don't get caught out by the parking
My friend and I decided to take our little ones to the play area, it wasn't to expensive and they loved it. But then about a week later I received a parking ticket! My friend was delayed meeting us so we waited in the car for them. I did not realise your time started from the moment you enter the car park. I didn't notice any signs stating this. I appealed the ticket but still had to pay which ruined our summer holiday plans as I couldn't afford to do much else after that. I rang Belvoir Castle to ask if there were signs explaining this, I was told to email them which I did twice and still no reply! I don't understand why companies set up contracts with these parking firms to penalise their customers. I'd understand if people used their carpark to go else where but there seems nothing near by!
Hi Rachel, we would happily investigate this for you but if you could include all information as to where you sent the original email. If you could please email marketing@belvoircastle.com thank you.

    Day out with my mum
Lovely afternoon at Belvoir Castle. Met old family friends at 12 noon. 3 hours spent wandering around the house & gardens up by the house before afternoon tea at 3pm. We bought afternoon tea as part of a package with house tickets which were good value in line with other venues in the midlands. I was happy to pay parking separately so we could car share. The toilets by the front gate are fine & functional. (When refurbishing please think about a lower sink for a child so they can reach the soap as this would be of benefit). The rose garden was beautiful, even in October. The roses smelt divine. The castle is naturally on a hill so wear suitable shoes for hilly paths. I was with my sprightly 80 yr old mum & she was fine in flat trainers. The house was lovely, attentive knowledgeable staff & interesting signs for each room. There was obvious care to scent the rooms which was really lovely. Family photos were lovely to see. The house toilets were lovely. Afternoon tea was plentiful & in a lovely room. The staff need to keep at least one of the staff members in the room at any one time for requests but this is a small observation. Sorry we got lost in the grounds but the walk was lovely & peaceful - thank you for the lift back to our car! I giggled when I realised when we got home that mum had left our marmalade in the car! Doh! Thank you for a lovely day - mum & I loved it.
Thank you for this lovely feedback, we're so pleased you spent all day enjoying everything Belvoir has to offer! I will give the feedback back to the Tearoom staff regarding requests, that's appreciated. If you wanted to email us on marketing@belvoircastle.com just to clarify about leaving the marmalade in another car? We'd be happy to send out some to you! Thanks again.

    Belvoir Castle parkrun
Returned to take part in Belvoir Castle parkrun today as they are now running the winter course inside the grounds. What a great setting and the backdrop of the castle looked amazing in the autumnal sunshine. Thank you for opening your grounds up to allow us to take part in parkrun. The volunteers and other runners were all so friendly. Lovely coffee afterwards too. 🏰🌳😎🏃🏼👍
Thank you for this wonderful feedback, it's our pleasure to open the grounds to a good cause. See you Saturday!

Generous and kind gift from the Duchess
Volunteered to help-out at the Belvoir Castle ParkRun on Saturday morning as Run Director and was pleasantly surprised to be given 100 leaflets with a kind messaged from the Duchess wishing us all a good ParkRun and giving a free tea or coffee to all runners. We were also given an extended free parking period for all runners. Two nice and generous gestures. Many thanks! (Any chance of repeating the kindness? :) ) Running in the grounds of this beautiful Castle is a wonderful experience I would recommend to everyone. Do join us at 9.00 am every Saturday (as a runner, walker, or volunteer).
Thank you for the feedback, we really appreciate you sharing this. ParkRun is such a great thing to be involved in and we hope to see you again this Saturday.

Can't help feeling this is too expensive overall
I have to say that these privately run historic properties seem so better presented than the National Trust equivalents and this is no exception. There is quite a bit to see including one of the best children’s play areas I have seen anywhere. However, the main object is to visit this latest Victorian Manifestation of several castles that have stood on this hill, the original dating back to the 11th century. The public areas are limited but what is available to view is very well done and interesting. Plenty of information and a garden that delivers some lovely walks. All in all, a very nice place to visit. The walk to the castle is very steep and walking impaired will find it difficult. If assistance was available, I didn't see it advertised. There are several cafes but the service inefficient and the presentation and portion size very poor to be honest for what they are charging. The choice is limited and the food very expensive for what is on offer. A large car park, managed by a private firm that has a reputation for ruthless enforcement of fines, incurs a parking fee from user unfriendly parking meters and it all adds up to a visit that will cost a family a sizeable hit on the wallet. All in all, nice but far too expensive.

Why didn't I visit before now ? Quite Amazing
First visit to Belvoir, I regret that I haven't visited before - it was absolutely breathtaking. We undertook a guided tour of the castle (the best £5 ever), it was excellent. A combination of fascinating, enthralling history in a beautiful setting. Like a homely warm lived in version of Windsor Castle. Don't miss out on the Tea Room, the influence and design of the Duchess of Rutland is everywhere to be seen. I would also recommend visiting the nearby Retail Village - Engine Hall.

Booked to visit the castle and gardens and paid £15 online. At no point does it say that you need to pay for parking. I arrived, saw the machines and, resigned, paid for the afternoon. As you walk towards the entrance kiosk there is a sign informing you the first hour is free. Funnily enough, there is NOTHING about this near the ticket machines. Also, you don't actually need to pay until you leave, so if you only stay one hour, you don't actually need to pay. They are taking the mick out of visitors and sadly, although I enjoyed looking round the castle, the entire experience was ruined by feeling cheated. The gardens are nothing to write home about and quite frankly, I have seen better kept woodland! If I had paid for just the gardens, I would have been demanding my money back. The best part of £20 for an afternoon of parking, castle and garden entrance is too much. Also, note that you can not take pictures in the castle. Overall, a disappointing experience.

Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Belvoir Castle We are sorry for any confusion with regard to the new parking system and we are working with the operators to iron out any issues that we are having. The parking charges are clearly displayed around the car park and next to the machines but we have taken your comments on board. Unfortunately due to winter fast approaching and government guidelines reducing the number of staff, our gardens are not as stunning as they normally are. We thank you for your comments and we have passed them on to the relevant department. We say no to taking photographs as the Castle is a lived in family home. We hope you will consider revisiting the Castle very soon. Many thanks.

£60 for an ice cream !
Well not actually for the ice cream but the parking fine that came a week later for over staying the parking time.
So just so other people don't get caught out in this money making scam, here's how it works - your car reg is logged via a camera on the way in and out of the car park. If the time you have paid for is short by even a few minutes, then you will receive a parking fine of £100 reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.
It would help if Belvoir put the car parking details on their web site to clarify the situation ref cameras logging in / out times.
I have never had to pay to park my car when visiting a garden especially when you consider it's £12 each for an adult.
The parking signs are quite confusing and I did not realise that you could pay at the end of your visit rather than try to guess how long you would be there hence why I got caught out thinking 3 hours would be ample, I did not allow for the first 15 minutes when I was sorting out the parking and walking back to my car to get my passangers, add to that 15mins in the queue to get in to the gardens.
The ice cream we bought from their shop made sure we were out of time.
The gardens themselves are ok - you need a good pair of shoes because it's hilly and has steep steps. The far end of the gardens are a good walk from the entrance so don't get caught out of time.
It would seem to me that the owners are after a very short term cash grab via their car parking fines for sure the reputational damage could be compared to a Gerald Ratner moment of the 1990's when he made customers question the value of the products it's business sold.
Is this a pleasant good value Garden and Castle to visit? or a £60 fine donation opportunity.
If you want proper good value - visit Trentham Gardens also £12 each but actually worth the money with the added advantage that it's not hilly terrain.
Today I paid the £60 fine, have your share of the 30 pieces of silver Belvoir because you won't have the opportunity to have any more of my (hard earned) cash.

We were staying just up the road from this magnificent castle so prior to starting our holiday booked tickets on line, we booked to go in from 11 to 1.30
We were greeted by a very friendly member of staff, and when we walked through this lovely house as it is a family home and it is lived in you notice all the family photos every where which gives it a very cosy, homely feel.
Unfortunately due to covid there are no audio tours, which is a great shame, but there are guides in each room to explain thing to you. Some of the room settings are stunning. It takes about an hour to walk through the house.
It was raining so we did not walk around the gardens, and as I am disabled we were able to drive up to the castle and park by a wall so it was only a few paces into the castle.
The gift shop has nice things in it that you can actually afford to buy, which makes a nice change.
From there we went to the Engine Yard which we felt was expensive and left after a few minutes

I regularly visit state , trust and private houses open to visitors. This place has been on my list for some time. I am utterly disappointed by the facilities and information provided at entrance. Firstly, the private property with acres and acres of land close to the actual entrance and all around the castle must not charge extra on top of entry ticket. Visitors are already charged once and must not be charged twice!

We have a small child in pram and really struggled to push the pram up the very steep path. We should have been given the permit to park in front of the actual castle gate.

Secondly, half of the rooms were closed or only had a small restricted view.

Lastly, visitors are not there to see hundreds of current family pictures. I find it rather surprising that the family declare themselves ‘enormously privileged’ in the first page of guidebook.

Visitors would be interested about past history of house rather than being overwhelmed by personal family photos of the current era.

I have been put off and probably will not visit this place again only for the reasons above. It is a wonderful place but made worse due to the above reasons.

My recommendations is to visit the place once keeping in mind all the above.

To add to all of the other complaints regarding the very complicated parking charges.
Three of us stood there and read the instructions, and all interpreted them differently !
To be safe I paid plenty, only for the machine to print a ticket with a lesser amount
and allowed time, didn’t give me the extra money back.
There was nobody around to explain to, and now like plenty of others have
received a £100 fine for allegedly staying 40 mins over.
The only recourse is to appeal online to the parking company, who sent a response
in about 15 minutes saying that they had ‘carefully considered’ the appeal but that it had been rejected.. surprise, surprise !
They actually sent me a response first with my details on a letter with the incorrect
info and regarding the other car park at the Engine Yard.
So you are wasting your time appealing, they just have a standard appeal rejection letter ready and waiting.
We were regular visitors and spent around £300 in the shops and restaurant that day, but it will be our last visit to the Engine Yard and it seems very poor decision by the owners to treat customers like this.

Free parking promised for engine yard on their website but on arrival this is not true and despite paying £2 (sign says first hour free and additional hour £2) and staying less than two hours received a £100 pound fine through the post over a week later as apparently you are supposed to come back after an hour to pay for the additional hour - though the signs do not say this. If you pay for the additional hour at the start of the stay you don’t get it - you just pay for what they say you get free. Even worse as the fine comes through the post later you probably have thrown your ticket away.
Belvoir castle own these car parks and should sort these “teething” problems out NOW and cancel these fines rather than referring customers to the car park operator they have appointed.
Contacted belvoir property services directly and left a message to discuss before posting this review but still haven’t responded. Shocking way to treat customers - not sorted out despite a number of reviews highlighting the issue. Please see Citizens Advice website on how to challenge these civil parking charges and the misleading signs.

As someone who has been a regular visitor for the last 14 years I’m so sad to see that is has rapidly gone downhill. The gardens are so badly cared for now and with the price increase to £10 just for the gardens it was so not worth it, weeds everywhere, trees down,,cuttings left all over, all the statues covered up, ponds need care..... so disappointed as usually autumn is my favourite time to go. The new parking charges (last visit was June so recent additions) just insult to injury. I understand people used to park there without going into the castle grounds but think if you are paying for admission it should cover the parking.

Sadly after today I won’t be going back as so disappointed. £34 to take my parents for a walk around gardens that are no better than a local walk on the outside of the grounds.

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent trip to Belvoir Castle. We are sad to hear that you feel the entry to the Gardens is too expensive as the admission price has been reduced to reflect the current COVID situation. In addition to this, child entry is free and we feel the prices reflect other Stately homes around the country. Unfortunately due to winter fast approaching and government guidelines reducing the number of staff, our gardens are not as stunning as they normally are. We thank you for your comments and we have passed them on to the relevant department.

I live in Grantham and had never visited Belvoir Castle so thought I'd visit after the lockdown restriction were lifted. Booking a visit online was very easy and children went free. It was a fascinating visit. We all loved our time visiting the various gardens and the woodlands. Returned and paid our parking fee (contacless payment) and drove home. All in all a remarkable and lovely place to visit, so I thought. A week letter I received Parking Charge Notice (PCN) from the company that runs the carpark at Belvoir Castle. I appealed and submitted the evidence in the hope it would be accepted and the PCN would withdrawn. Instead I received an email stating that my appeal was rejected and that I'd have to pay £60 within 28 days and a full amount payable thereafter. If this is not a scam to rip innocent people then I do not know what it is. I do not have the time and energy to go after these cow boys, but administrators at Belvoir Castle please take note that there have been many complaints from visitors getting ripped off by this parking company. I am absolutely disgusted. This was my first and last visit to Belvoir Castle. Never again!

With all the current restrictions in place we decided to visit the extensive grounds of this magnificent country home. The car park was thronging but carefully socially distancing was paramount, most respecting others by stepping back and waiting for other visitors to pass. Pre-booking the visit is a must to ensure that 'bunching' of sightseers was avoided - quite successfully. Once in the grounds however, there is ample space for people to spread out thus avoiding any stress. The beautifully manicured castle grounds were a joy to behold and the woodland left us in a world of our own. It helped with weather being lovely but I'm sure that even on inclement days there is always something to delight the senses. We finished off our tour by visiting the Engine Yard a beautiful refurbishment by the Duchess of Rutland whose thoughts and imagination has created an area of artisan shops to intrigue most visitors. All in all a great day out.

I had not planned to join a guided tour beforehand, thinking that I would walk around on my own, but then at the ticket gate, after I heard the tour being recommended to the couple in front of me, I decided to sign up for it as well. And I certainly did not regret it!
The tour was fascinating, with our guide giving us a wealth of fascinating facts and interesting anecdotes.
On the day of my visit there was a lot going on: A motoring club had a lunch at the castle, and preparations were being made for weekend events, so there were a lot of workers around, and access to some areas was somewhat restricted. However, I felt that the staff tried their very best to accommodate visitors and keep the inconvenience as limited as possible.
If nothing else, then the activities around me proved that this is a 'living' castle, and not just a relict of bygone times. In fact, the combination of using one third of the castle as private living quarters of the family, making one third open to the general public, and at the same time making the site available for all kinds of functions, seems to be the right formula and ensures the upkeep of the place for future generations.
I therefore was also more than happy to pay £18 admission, which I felt was justified. The same cannot be said about the parking fees, though. I feel that if someone pays £18 to visit the castle, as well as spending money on purchases in the cafe and gift shop, they shouldn't also have to pay extra for parking.
But overall I spent a lovely day at Belvoir Castle and believe it's well worth a visit!
