We were on an organised bus tour to Ubud. Before we got to Ubud, we stopped at a coffee plantation, Negari, in Luwak. We received a guided tour of the grounds and a coffee tasting.

There were various animals in cages such as chickens, parrots, rabbits, ducks and goats. One of the animals was the civet. These animals eat the coffee beans and pass them out at the other end. This is supposedly to make the coffee taste better.

We visited negari coffee on the way back from Ubud when our driver clued on that we were coffee fanatics. We had heard about luwak coffee aka cat poo coffee years ago and were curious to try. When we walked in I thought it was strange to see all sorts of animals in tiny cages and about 10 civets in cages (one of which seemed deranged pacing back and forth). Not knowing the full story behind the luwak coffee, we bought one cup for $5 which we thought was fairly cheap compared to the exorbitant prices we had heard about) and sure the coffee was smooth and delicious....but then I read a few articles about luwak coffee including one from Tony Wild and regretted my visit to the strange 'mini zoo/ mini plantation' tourist attraction. They have a large plantation 2 hour north and who knows how they treat their civets...but I could probably hazard a guess. At the end of the day, yes the coffee was silky smooth and rich in flavour but was it worth it...??

Civits kept in tiny cages. Deer in a tiny enclosure. Birds in small cages. We were very disappointed that our driver recommended that we stop here. I would not recommend stopping here just for the sake of trying a luewak coffee. We need to stop supporting businesses that exploit and trap wild animals.

We stopped by on our way to Ubud and were immediately depressed and very sad when visiting this place. The Luwak and flying dog bats are kept in tiny little cages. They told us that they are only in there during day time. We don't think that this statement is trustable.

The worst thing was two monkeys kept in a small cage (see picture). The monkeys were running around in their cage, trying to open the door, no water, extremely nervous, seemed agressive. Very very poor animals.

We probably would have bought something there if the animals were treated right, but not like that. Animal cruelty, nothing more.

Our driver stopped here for us in the afternoon and said it would be a good place to have a drink...
When we walked in to start with its lovely but as I walked more into the garden I started getting a sick feeling. The animals here have tiny cages, really tiny and cruel, and are showing signs that they are going crazy. The monkeys are darting around their cage and thrashing on the bars. There are deer type animals that have a very muddy pen with no grass to stand on, just mud. One had a very swollen foot and was limping badly.
It's awful to know that there are places like this and that people are happy to go.
I would not go again and wish now that I turned around at the start.

You step from the parking lot through a gate and into a park. Here you will see the civit cat that the locals call Luwak. . These are the animals that eat coffee beans and poop them out and then they are processed into the most delicious expensive coffee in the world. They serve samples and we Tried and it tasted better than Bali coffee. A few other animals in the park. A store to purchase some coffee. It is expensive.

A taxi driver recomended this coffee plantation to me and I couldn't have been more pleased! When I arrived I got a guide right away who showed me all the coffeebeans and spices they grow, the roasting process and the animal who they get the luwak coffee from. In the end you get to taste different types of tea and coffee and all of this is for free. The only thing that costs is if you wanna try the luwak coffee which is 50 000 IDR. They also have a little shop where you can by their coffee and tea. I really enjoyed my visit!

We were taken to this place on by our taxi driver.
I am still trying to get over the sight of all the animals in small cages with no shade, no place to hide away and no company for some of them.
There was a lone monkey in a cage who appeared to be going mad. Bashing at the cage and trying to get some attention.
I would never go there again and I encourage others to not support such a terrible place.
Most of the animals there had nothing to do with coffee at all.

We were "spontaneously" dropped by here by a taxi driver on our way to Ubud. I really wish we had looked into it first. We thought it would just be to taste a few different coffees and maybe buy some as souvenirs but, really this place is a small zoo, exploiting animals to sell coffee. The animals (many unrelated to coffee) are kept in very small cages, dirty with faeces. Nocturnal animals have nowhere to sleep as they are "on show". The cages are nothing more than concrete cells with no greenery or anything of interest to play with or on. Some cages are so small the animal cannot even stretch to full size and have to curl up (lizard, snake, some Luwaks). There is no shade provided. There are baby monkeys taken from their mother (I asked) and you are allowed to hold a baby Luwak for photos. Ideally this place should be avoided until they at least use some of the money from their inflated coffee prices to provide better conditions for their animals (if they must have them). If you do feel the need to visit please consider writing to the manager to pressure for better conditions for the animals.
