Took a side trip through the small downtown area of Donaldson on way to Nottoway Plantation. Has a couple of streets which have stood still in time with many historical elements still visible. Beautiful old buildings to observe. Definitely worth a drive.

A little off the beaten path, a few blocks from the historic building district is the Ascension Catholic Cemetery. We stayed in Donaldsonville because it was closest to Pierre Part, LA. It is very close to River Road and many plantations. They also have an Historic District and great restaurants. And, of course, the mighty Mississippi River!

Donaldsonville, Louisiana, an historic town on the Mississippi River south of Baton Rouge that dates to 1806 and once was used by the notorious pirate Jean Lafitte as his headquarters, is touted as the "Gateway to Cajun and Plantation Country." Situated on highway 1, it is a few miles south of Nottoway, the largest and grandest antebellum mansion of all,... More
