I would go out of my way to stop at the Big Chicken Barn - we look forward to it every year on our drive home from Canada to Connecticut. This year we were limited to one hour and it was not enough time!!! Browse books, china & pottery, textiles, tools, jewelry, artwork, record albums, dolls, furniture, tchotchkes, memorabilia and... The Big Chicken Barn in Ellsworth Maine is a fantastic place to poke around. You absolutely could spend hours here. It's huge and packed to the rafters with antiques, books and magazines from days gone by. I still make finds there which is rare in an antique store these days. I usually find some very nice vintage clothing, and the... More

Last year was the first time I stopped here , confinced by my girlfriend that it was worth the delay to bar harbor , we stopped. I was thinking that we would be put of there with in 30 tops right? I was so wrong!!! There is so much to see from the mid 1800's to present that you lose... More

While we were unable to find anything that called our name - the Big Chicken Barn was filled to the brim with treasures and your grandma's remnants. You will need a few hours to do justice to the volume that you will need to peruse. We did not go upstairs but it apparently is filled with books. Most everything was... More

I had planned to go here on my trip, only got to spend 30 minutes here before they had to close. Only got to look at the first floor. Good selection of stuff if you are into "old" things. No "junk" that some other "antique" places have! If this type of place is your thing, you will not be disappointed!

The bottom floor is antiques and the second floor is books. Large assortment of things as this is filled with booths by different people. Weather was beautiful and it was a good stop for us as we all found something we liked.

The best thing about this old barn is that it is huge and it's been around a long time. If you are looking for old books that no one wants anymore, and junk masquerading as antiques, this is the place for you. Picked over daily by antiques dealers, there are no bargains here. Staff varies from indifferent to protective and... More

We stop here every time we are in the Ellsworth area. There is always something crazy or unusual to see. It's certainly worth a few minutes to walk through and see what catches your eyes. Not a good stop with small kids though as there are plenty of things you won't want them touching.

One of my favorite places to go and explore because I love book in particular. It is exactly what the name implies -- a big, old former chicken barn. The bottom floor is chock full of antiques of anything you can imagine. The top floor is books of every kind. A great place to go to find that unique item... More
