Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The shear size of the United States Custom House should draw your attention. It is almost like a monument located in the middle of the port. If you like architecture, spend some time viewing the windows and columns. A nice asset for the City of Portland.

This stately, gray-granite, 37.2 foot (11.3 m) tall public building blended the architectural styles of Second Empire and Renaissance Revival. Built during 1867-1872, after the Great Fire of 1866 had burned 1,800 buildings in the center of Portland, it was designed to be fireproof. It took its place on the historical register in 1973. Among its many distinctive and eye-catching design features were its use of both Doric and Corinthian columns, its twin square cupolas with Mansard roofs, and its roofing of slate tiles. Its interior public space featured wonderful black and white checkerboard marble flooring. We most liked the stateliness of the structure. We only wished there were a plaque or a kiosk to engage the public more about the building.

Another one of Portland's magnificent landmark buildings that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's a Renaissance Revival style made of New Hampshire granite and took five years to build, from 1867 to 1872. The twin cupolas are unique and add to the structure's outstanding architecture.

We attended a lovely wedding at the Customs House late July. This beautiful landmark has been meticulously restored and maintained. An added and unexpected treat was the historic background provided by the leader of the General Services Administration for this site. His extensive knowledge and love of the Customs House was supplemented by his colleague from security. They made the night even more memorable with their stories, humor, and warm welcome.
Plus, they provide the wedding couple with a poster of the Customs House for guests to sign. We will never forget this visit.

The building is old looking and looks cool right in the middle of the street with all the frame tourist shops. It really sets it apart and makes it look cool.

Nestled among the many shops along the main street by the cruise ships, sits this old grey stoned building built back in 1800's, rich in history.

This is a large impressive building near the port. We walked past it on our way from the cruise port to do a DIY walking tour of Portland. You can't miss it! Worth a photo.

When in Old Port, we always admire the Custom House. It's just such a magnificent building with a great history. We've never been inside, but maybe one of these days!
